sorry AceMotel; this very good news

Prepare to kiss your property values goodbye. Time to prepare for a three hour comute downtown. This guy does not care about West Seattle. He is a fool on a fool’s errand. We are all going to pay for his mistakes.
Comment by Wsm — November 6, 09 6:33 pm #
The tunnel’s a comin. Quit with the propaganda, Glenn Beck aka Wsm.
Comment by bl@ster — November 6, 09 6:39 pm #
McGinn came to WS 4 -5 times to meet neighbors in forums; Mallahan zero times; by that count, seems McGinn cares a bit more about WS than the other guy
Comment by Diane — November 6, 09 6:47 pm #
just wait, guys. I give him less than six months before things start falling apart. Going to the neighborhoods to meet neighbors does not a mayor make.
Also, were we hoping for a smooth relationship with city council? aha ha ha ha ha they will eat him up.
Comment by AceMotel — November 6, 09 7:12 pm #
No matter who winds up as Mayor, we will most likely be getting the tunnel and could also get light rail over here sooner than later, if the other person in charge of the city gets his way:

I was referring to comment “This guy does not care about West Seattle”

“Going to the neighborhoods to meet neighbors” during a very busy campaign shows a lot of caring

I like Mike!!!!

And guess what. More election results released tonight. McGinn now up by more than 2,200. Adding to main story shortly.
Comment by WSB — November 6, 09 8:05 pm #
Think about this. One of Mallahan’s constituencies is people who have a lot of opinions but don’t bother to vote. He has been one of those people for the last 5 elections. That’s the most basic thing you can do politically. As such, if that part of his constituency actually showed up at the polls he’d be Mayor now.
I actually had an opportunity to hang out and talk alone with McGinn a couple weeks ago. I told him I thought his background as a community activist was substantial enough to campaign on without getting into grandiose issues. He got sidewalks built in his neighborhood. That’s no small feat, as anyone who ever got involved in leading a community project knows.
I’d love to see a Mayor who builds sidewalks, fixes potholes, provides safe streets, transportation alternatives, and better neighborhood planning.
Those are all things that will make this city more livable.
For the record, I voted for Nickels in the primary, and would have done so again had he run.
That’s politics and horse racing for you though.
Comment by I. Ponder — November 6, 09 9:29 pm #
The interests of the people should come first, not the interests of big biz money backers. I’m crossing my fingers Mike wins!
Comment by Babs — November 6, 09 10:06 pm #
Relax folks…
Whoever wins deserves a chance.
If he screws up, we throw him out in the next election.
Comment by old timer — November 6, 09 10:59 pm #
The one thing that Mike McGridlock doesn’t seem to get is that we need a balance between business and people. Without a viable transportation corridor, we have no business. Without business, we have no jobs. Without jobs, we have no economy and no city.
You can’t just stick it to business and expect to have a vibrant economy anyway.
Comment by Huindekmi — November 7, 09 6:59 am #
Electioneering and governing are two different things. Reality will kick in.
The mayor doesn’t really control everything: jobs, transportation. Granted, it’s a bully pulpit.
Is it possible Nickels was a great Mayor?
Comment by I. Ponder — November 7, 09 8:25 am #
I was suprised to see a second round of results posted later on Friday night. That is clearly different than what King County told us would be happening. Was there a mistake made earlier? It makes me question the process.
Comment by flowerpetal — November 7, 09 8:46 am #
It definitely came out of the proverbial blue - I was monitoring Twitter and @kcnews tweeted “second round of results today now available” - I know nobody else was expecting it because there’s been this ongoing friendly competition among Twitter newsies to be the first to tweet when the 4:30 round comes out, and nobody else seemed to be “on” this one. However, the “results schedule” page on the KC website does list a second round for last night. I couldn’t tell you if that was added after the fact or not:
http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/elections/200911/resultsschedule.aspx
Since they aren’t posting over the weekend, though, just might make sense.

Wow, sounds like I may be radical political nerd after all (a guy on Alki called me that on primary election day, just because I knew the candidates and was filling out my ballot)
~
I was anxiously awaiting Fri night results, and thrilled to see Mike pull so far ahead
~
both the Times and PI had it in their 5pm results stories, so I thought everyone knew:

and I’m pretty sure KC website had a note when I checked 5pm numbers, that there would be another release of results around 9ish
Comment by Diane — November 7, 09 11:09 am #
Nope, it wasn’t on the schedule for a second Friday reporting. At least it wasn’t on Friday afternoon at the time of the first reporting. If they added it, they added it later. The skeptic side of me smells something funny.
Comment by flowerpetal — November 7, 09 11:22 am #
Thanks Diane. I missed that on the KC elections results page. I was probably so excited to see McGinn pull ahead with 1200+ votes that I didn’t read the fine print about a second report for the same evening.

If it takes anyone three hours to get downtown it’s no ones fault but their own. It doesn’t take three hours to walk to downtown.
