West Seattle’s newest Little Free Library answers the call

We feature new Little Free Libraries as they pop up around West Seattle, as we hear about them – and today, Rose Sheppard from the Building Committee at Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation sends word and pic of theirs, and its designer:

On October 4th, our Little Free Library was installed. Designed and built by congregant John Monahan, we love the Dr Who phone booth motif. It’s a perfect model! We are sure it’s the best British phone booth on this side of the Atlantic Ocean – and much more useful.

We are very grateful to John and proud to have such a distinctive Little Free Library structure on the south side (Othello St.) of our church property at 7141 California Ave SW.

Erm…Dr Who’s iconic box is blue, and is a police box, not a phone booth! But this Little Free Library is still indeed very attractive!

H., yes, so our co-publisher informed me upon my return to the keyboard, and yet for many people the British phone booth seems to evoke the Who reference too … the text in blue is what we received (minus the TARDIS info link, which was my add & so I’m removing).

Or a quick trip to the Ministry of Magic via the visitor’s entrance.

Oops. My bad. I have not watched enough of the good doctor to know that his transporter is a blue police box and not a red phone booth. My error. Not John’s, the designer. He always referred to it as a phone booth.
Well, it’s cool anyway. Maybe something else will pop out.

For the record, I’ve changed the headline. But I’m afraid I will still forever think “TARDIS” when I see a classic British phone booth of any color! Thanks again to Rose & co. for sharing the news. It’s always a sweet sight in a neighborhood. – TR

Not to be an uber nerd, but frankly the world must know the truth: The TARDIS is a Police Call Box- not a phone booth. It is imperative to keep such important matters in perspective.

I got into trouble with that one too. Was informed that he is not Doctor Who but The Doctor.

  • Andrew Taylor October 5, 2014 (7:16 pm)

Those of us who are old enough to have actually used such a British phone booth, when they actually contained pay phones, must regretfully inform you that (given that the sense of smell seems to be the most primitive of the senses) the sight of such a phone booth evokes memories of discarded french fries and stale urine. Yep, reality can be such a downer sometimes.

  • Mary October 5, 2014 (9:28 pm)

Well, “they” were just wrong, WSB; I think “Doctor Who” is entirely acceptable. (Now, “Dr. Who” would have been odd.) Regardless, I appreciate your reporting of all such sightings.

As an official British person, I have to agree with Andrew, those phone boxes always evoke the memory of a particular musty smell (unique to that style of phone box). The smell even lingers in some of them years after the phone was ripped out. Anyway, it’s a lovely Little Free Library but nothing like the TARDIS :)
