The Velvet BulldogParticipantYeah I know, there are 99 reasons to love Meander’s and the exhaust system ain’t one.
This is: Miranda gave me a preview of the Chocolate Pot de Creme with Espresso Chantilly and Florentine Lace Cookie. It was beyond sublime, it was one of the most heavenly, swoon-worthy desserts I’ve ever had.
It was SO good, that I shared it with the tattooed bad-ass guys at the end of the counter. They ended up getting their own. And then they bought lunch for me and my lunch buddy.
That’s the kind of awesome that happens at Meander’s.
Thanks Miranda–and thanks guys!!

SueParticipantAwesome, indeed, TVB! I remember when they first opened, this older gentleman was sitting next to me at the counter. He ordered a cinnamon roll (back when they had those at breakfast) and I said “mmmm … looks good!” and next thing I know he’s cutting off half of it and pushing the plate to me to share with him. I’ve never been in a place before where customers actually interact. I’m not the type of person who even likes that generally, but there I get sucked into the niceness of it.

The Velvet BulldogParticipantThere’s something about sitting at the counter that encourages that interaction–with the chef and with the other diners.
Geez, no one ever offered ME any cinnamon roll!! ;-)

johnnyblegsMemberYes. Meander’s and everyone there is pretty awesome. I’ve been meaning to post this for a while…
My wife and I were in in a few Sundays back. Got there soon after they opened. We sat at a four top because she was pregnant and any extra space is nice. Slowly they started to fill up. A couple came in with a kid and the only other table that was left was a two top. My wife gave the couple our table and we moved over. We ordered breakfast; I always get the hash with gravy. Wife got the french toast.
We were enjoying our food and soaking in all that makes Meander’s when the waiter came over and told us the couple paid for our breakfast. It brought tears to my wife’s eyes. This has never happened to me. Ever. We were so touched. Didn’t think that kind of kindness was still out there.
Thank you so much generous couple and thank you Meander’s.

kgdlgParticipantAll I want there is a new HVAC system. Please!
August 11, 2012 at 3:38 am #766532
celeste17Participantkgdlg-we all want a new exhaust system and Miranda wants a new system but have you a few thousands you can give her now? She knows how much she needs and it working on it. :)
August 11, 2012 at 4:02 am #766533
kgdlgParticipantWell that is good to hear! I am actually surprised she hasn’t been ticketed by public health on it. It is very hard to breathe in there. I am sorry she cannot afford it but I can’t eat there until she does – seems like something that should be required for an open kitchen like that.

JanSParticipantkatman…well, we do try to be entertaining at times ;-)
August 11, 2012 at 5:05 am #766540
SueParticipantIf you read the welcome message in the breakfast menu, it actually mentions the ventilation, acknowledges that it sucks, but that it will cost several thousand $ to fix. This time of year the door is open and it really isn’t that bad. And that’s coming from someone with lung issues who generally doesn’t have any issues there.
August 11, 2012 at 5:37 am #766541
kgdlgParticipantListen I like meanders. I like Miranda. But I still don’t think it is ok to run a restaurant without a proper HVAC system. It is like saying, “sorry I don’t have windows here” or “sorry my bathroom doesn’t have running water”. Proper venting is required for a restaurant. It is expensive and it is a cost of doing business, so she should get a personal or business loan and fix it.
August 11, 2012 at 2:13 pm #766542
JoBParticipantkgdlg
given a choice between no Meanders and a Meanders with the current ventilation, i choose Meanders.
and that is the choice.
the best way to ensure that Meanders gets the HVAC system of your dreams is to show up often and order a lot… so she can afford it.
Has everyone forgotten what it looks like when someone who doesn’t have deep pockets builds a business from scratch?
Meanders wouldn’t be nearly as successful if she had concentrated her resources on the space and not the food.
August 11, 2012 at 2:32 pm #766543
GinaParticipantGreat. Now I want a Meanders breakfast.
August 11, 2012 at 2:54 pm #766544
katmanParticipantWhat time do they open for breakfast? Is there a web site to view a menu???,,,, katman
August 11, 2012 at 3:17 pm #766545
kgdlgParticipantJoB I understand your point of view but this is a very similar situation to the Columbia city theater building and the seismic upgrades that were needed there for health and safety. For years the owner said he “couldn’t afford them” because he was just a struggling small business. At some point you have to say there are just a minimum set of standards all businesses need to meet to operate. If you didn’t do this, there would be stories everywhere of things undone because of struggle. Small mom and pop businesses struggle – I get it. My fear is that she will always struggle because the space is not big enough to grow profit. I honestly don’t know how she has gotten by so long with it the way it is.
August 11, 2012 at 3:18 pm #766546
kgdlgParticipantThe city office of economic develoPment has low interest loans just for things like this. I hope she is having these conversations.
August 11, 2012 at 3:30 pm #766547
johnnyblegsMemberkgdlg – She’s succeeded this long because the place is always packed. Her food is pretty incredible.
“..fear that she will always struggle because the space is not big enough”? Please. Tell us the secret formula for how much she needs to grow seating for her business to survive. I’ll be the first in line. How about you give that same formula to every business along California.
Larger space does not equal more profit. Ever.
Remember Ovio on the corner of Edmonds & California? then Amma Amma? then Terrible Beauty? TTB has survived this long not because of the size of that space but because they filled a niche of great food on that end of the Junction. Meander’s is doing the same.
I’ll go there as much as I can so she can eventually buy a better exhaust system and I suggest you do the same. The benefits far outweigh the means.
August 11, 2012 at 4:29 pm #766548
JoBParticipantkglg..
so you know Miranda and like her
but you want to tank her business by burdening it with a loan she can’t afford just when she is attempting to extend her hours?
because you find the lack of ventilation in her restaurant troubling…
there is an easy solution. don’t go there.
the example you provided is an interesting one..
because as far as i can tell the only thing that was accomplished there was to put one small business owner out of business and install another group
the problem was sprinklers
and the second group reopened with the promise of a one year feasibility study on installing sprinklers
so nothing has been fixed
and the business owner who couldn’t afford the loan is out of business..
http://blog.seattlepi.com/thebigblog/2011/12/21/once-shuttered-columbia-city-cinema-is-back/
is that what you want for Meanders?
because taking Miranda out of Meanders won’t leave anything worth saving..
no matter how sweet the study for the feasibility for an HVAC system
August 11, 2012 at 5:35 pm #766549
PibalParticipantHow about a jar on Meander’s counter specifically for a new HVAC system? You pay for your food plus tip, and should you be so inclined, you leave a few $ more for the HVAC system. Eventually, it will add up…
Of course, then the lines will be longer still. The old mantra applies: Be careful what you wish for!
