    Hi,

I was running in Lincoln Park at around 8:45am near Colman Pool. A woman was walking two leashed black dogs (one was a shepherd or large poodle). As I ran by one of the dogs jumped up and bit me on the arm. After my expletive laced conversation (yes, I was annoyed she couldn’t control her dogs – sorry for the languange), I ran off. About 100 yards later I looked at the bite and saw the dog had broken the skin. I ran back to find the woman as I now need to know the vaccination history of the dog. I was unable to find her. If you are that person, please contact me (WSB has my info) with the dog’s vaccination history.

    Thanks

    Paul

The “just in case” rabies series of shots sucks. It’s a miserable experience. Please, whoever you are, contact the original poster if only to show him proof that your dog has been vaccinated. Save him the pain, expense and trouble of going through that treatment. It’s the least you could do.

first.. let me make it clear that i am sorry you were bitten and that i agree that the woman should contact you if she can…

but in the interest of dogs and runners.. or bikers for that matter… sharing the park safely… i have to ask..

did you approach the woman from the front so that she knew you were there or did you hail her from the back so that she had the time to control her dogs as you passed?

because a lot of surprised dogs will snap especially if they are at all protective.

i know that most runners i encounter while walking my dogs in Lincoln Park don’t bother letting me know they are behind me and then swear profusely when i barely manage to keep my pup from grabbing them as they pass by.

i can control my leashed dogs.. what i can’t control are the other people in the park :(

a little education on this subject could make the park a safer place for all of us who want to use the trails.

I approached her from the front…she saw me coming and I even ran my typical arc around her dogs as they seem to be excited. She didn’t control their jumping and their strength pulled her and her dogs to me.

Really? It is somehow the joggers fault that the dog bit him? Seriously! If you dog bites have it wear a muzzle when in public.

As someone who has been bitten by a pit recently, I just have to say, dog owners need to be able to control their animals. Accidents will happen, ofcourse, none of us is perfect, but the dog owner is who is going to get cited by animal control if they can find you.

Sorry you got bit Paul. I’d call animal control and file a report. They’ll come by and take a photo of your injury and a description of the animal and owner. They will patrol the area to see if they see the owner and / or dog in the future.

I know how you feel if it’s any consolation. I didn’t need a rabies shot, I just had my bite rinsed at Swedish and got a tetanus shot.

    Best of luck to you.

    i am so sorry paul…

clearly you are one of the good guys…

I knew that remark wouldn’t make me terribly popular… but yeah-me’s reaction is the reason i mentioned this issue.

This idea so many have that they not only have rights but it’s everyone else’s responsibility to make those rights work for them gets old really fast.

I too have been bitten more than once..

generally breaking up fights with unleashed dogs who approach my leashed dogs…

and have yet to do a course of rabies shots.

The fact that the woman was walking her dog on leash at all makes your odds pretty high that the dog is current on it’s shots…

but i would make sure your tetanus is current.

I basically did the rinse at Swedish and found out my tetanus is current…I didn’t need the rinse, the wounds are pretty superficial – I just didn’t know that I had a Tetanus shot in the last 5 years (good thing their records are stored electronically – at least mine were). I have no plans to do the rabies shots…since the dog was leashed I really have no worries about rabies.

Big fan of doing the tetanus on the zero years… as in 2000, 2010, 2020… I’m pretty sure I’ve had 200 tentnus shots in the last 20 years because I always forget when/if I had one and its not in my records, so I got another one this year and now I can remember. If you are a fellow idiot, it’s the idiot proof way to remember.

I am sorry to for the bite.

As for rabies, I HIGHLY doubt the dog has rabies. There has not been a rabies case in WESTERN Wa for over 20 years in a cat or dog. I understand the alarm but, I have to know this information as I deal with cat bites all the time. I have talked to Center for Disease Control a few times in Seattle. They say the risk is very low. With all the pitbull attacks, once they have killed the dog and do the rabies tests not to mention the 10 day quarantine they have to do. So far not one dog has had it. If it did I am sure we would know about it.

I am not defending the dumb dog owner it is NOT the dogs fault, of course the dog always gets the blame. I again am sorry, can you describe the person? I of course don’t know if you can do this on the blog as per the rules, but if she does read this she is doubt she will respond.

    I personally won’t get a tetanus shot.
