bazooMemberYes, I miss Charlie Chong. I remember well when he proposed purchasing used snow plows for “a song” and the rest of the council just laughed at him.
When we don’t have enough snow plows to clear the main arterial roads…. that’s pretty stupid of us
as a community. I’d love to see West Seattle pull our resources and purchase one just for us. Forget the rest of Seattle!

celeste17ParticipantOr contract with private contractors to provide service to West Seattle.

JanSParticipantCeleste, now there’s an idea. When my sister was first married, she lived in the Berkshire Hills of Western Mass. on top of a hill. Her driveway was a half mile long and it snowed a lot up there in the winter. She had a guy who would come and plow immediately, kept her driveway clean all winter so she could get out. Maybe we (collectively) need to consider the private thing in the future. It would help us, and help some guy’s economy, for sure….

Garden_nymphMemberMy brother in law in Illinois has a yard service in the summer and snow plowing in the winter. Maybe Ken’s Yard service or another yard service company would want to consider buying a plow attachment to expand their company’s offerings? I’m sure good ol Charlie is laughing at us, while watching all this from on high! He tried so hard to get support to buy those snow plows! Those snow plows were later bought by Bellevue, if memory serves. He also worked to bring awareness to the traffic on the West Seattle bridge and the impact of the urban villages that were starting to pop up around West Seattle. Oh how right he was!!! What a loss for Seattle that Charlie Chong is no longer among us!

celeste17ParticipantMy former boyfriend was a contract worker for the city he lived in as a snow plower. He would work his regular job and then go and plow roads. Sometimes he was up for 36 hours.

GenHillOneParticipantI love this idea. I saw a pick-up with a blade attached several days ago but haven’t since. He (she?) was at a construction site, so I can only assume it served the purpose of helping them get to/do their jobs.

hammerheadParticipantI have to admit I don’t remember charlie chog much. Since I don’t know the story of the snow plows being purchased for a “song”. This snow fall is rare. The economy is struggling enough. I can’t justify buying new or used snow plows for something that only possible occurs every 10-20 years. I think the food banks or homeless shelters are much more important. Now with global warming, well lets see what happens next year. Then maybe we get a new mayor who can do a better job then hopefully things will change.

cjboffoliParticipantSome cities back east convert their garbage trucks to snowplows to add numbers to their fleets during storms. The trucks are already powerful 10-wheelers. Just keeping extra plow blades around is much less expensive than buying and maintaining a whole bunch of dedicated plow trucks that can be used for nothing else.
Seattle could definitely be more creative about dealing with these snow events.

WSBKeymasterCliff Mass’s entry from last night
includes what he found snowplow blades for on eBay. Surprisingly cheap.
