WestSeaDebMemberI know that raccoons have been discussed many times on the WSB. Some accept them, others find them a nuisance, and a few would do anything to get rid of them.
Tonight though, I saw a raccoon with a rusty jaw type trap on its front leg, almost severing the paw. It was so sad to see this critter trying to get out of the trap and getting the chain stuck in our rockery and shrubs.
Called animal control and they were here within 30 minutes to pick up the animal. We netted it with a fishing net to keep it contained until they got here. (Now know what to get my husband for Father’s Day-had to cut the net free from the trap)
As sad as it was to see this poor animal in such distress; I thought about the worse outcomes that could have been, a dog or child stepping into this type of trap.
If you are, or know of someone who is setting out this type of trap, please consider the consequences of such actions.
Thanks!

CaitParticipantThat’s so sad… I’m glad to hear that you did something instead of just letting it pass by… not that it sounds like it could have. :-(

GenHillOneParticipantThat’s truly horrible.

WestSeaDebMemberIt did keep getting loose, not from the trap, but from the chain being caught. We were concerned about it getting up onto the sidewalk where lots of families walk with their kids and their dogs.
Thus, the net.

TraciMemberMy heart is broken for that raccoon. Thank you so much for helping it out and providing it a quicker death.

hammerheadParticipantIf you know someone or find them(traps) call the police they are ILLEGAL. Then turn around and put it on the human that set them. Most idiots who put those damn things out are out of reach of children, dogs or even cats are MORE at risk. i don’t care if you don’t want raccoons in your back yard that is just plain wrong.

fetchwestMemberI am a huge animal lover but can understand the problems racoons can cause. We need to remember that these are living creatures that we have moved into their area. They don’t understand our laws and restrictions. I wish there were better outlets to reloating them to safe areas where they can live the happy lives they deserve. WestSeaDeb, I think it was a wonderful thing you did. So many people would have just kept walking and not done anything.
