What is that exactly? Oh, maybe I should Google it up instead of ask the folks here.

i can’t answer your question jiggers since i am pretty sure i have never indulged in political correctness …

unless I just happened to take what someone else considered the politically correct stance…

but i have to tell you that you proposing that topic definitely caught my eye ;->

That’s what the whiners say when someone calls them on their sexist, racist, bigoted BS.

If that response doesn’t go over, next thing is “Geez, can’t you take a joke?”

A good (if not irrelevant) example would be changing the Star Trek line from “to boldly go where no MAN has gone before” to “to boldly go where no ONE has gone before”.

References to “man” or “mankind” throughout history are inclusive of both sexes yet because of the dumbing of America they nevertheless succumb to political correctness.

Got it, retard (as in retardation – a medical term also driven out by PC). Kidding, of course, but another valid example…..

smitty…retard is considered offensive by those with mental illness.

Here’s something else that has changed, because it’s offensive..when I was a child growing up in eastern PA near Philly we called Italian Sub sandwiches “Wop Jobs”. Everyone did…it was a different time. Now, that word “wop” is highly offensive to Italians. What I’m saying is…just because you CAN say it doesn’t mean you SHOULD say it. It has nothing to do with PC ! Would you call an African-American a “Negra” or any other derivation? And then would you tell them to get a spine and deal with it, so you can say you’re not PC? I doubt that you would. You’re not that dumb!

Come now, “no man” vs “no one” is the perfect example of PC run amok.

I think WOP stood for With Out Papers. Can you imagine? They should have called them undocumented……to give the impression that they “forgot” their documents instead of jumping the queue (like west seattle bridge bus lane violators)…..

    Nope.

I think WOP stood for With Out Papers.

    Nope.

    I suggest reading some history.

    smitty..

i so wish references to man or mankind in history (his story) were inclusive of women.

    women do get mentioned occasionally

but in spite of a lifetime’s interest in what women have historically been up to..

it is only recently that the accomplishments of some pretty cool women have been published.

it works for your half of the race

but not so much for mine

    WOP

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wop

“comes from the Italian word “guappo”, meaning a swaggerer, pimp, or ruffian”

and was originally used by Italian Americans to designate a Italians from a particular area where a crime syndicate flourished.

and while we are at it since i am into equal opportunity..

    MICK..

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/mick

which came from the preponderance of irish catholic men named Michael … who also formed their own little syndicates in America

and then of course there is BOHUNK .. from my personal ancestral line

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bohunk

again.. a bunch of mostly catholic immigrants who had their own turn at being the last off the boat…

i have never heard evidence of allegations of criminal networks among this particular group of immigrants but that may be because the tended to immigrate in family groups and either mined or farmed which pretty much removed them from urban areas.

    some ethnics slurs are entertaining..

    others .. not so much

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs_by_ethnicity

there is a separate page for the germans .. which gives new meaning to the term goon..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terms_used_for_Germans

i suppose the term goon referring to germans would be polically incorrect…

    whereas Kraut is downright offensive..

WOP means “wide open phones” on the Tom Leykis show and his long time call screener is Italian, from Philadelphia..I wonder if that’s what they originally meant when they keep saying WOP. Maybe there’s that conncection. It has to be. Damn….. I just learned something and never knew what the actual WOP stood for on Tom’s show. Of course, Tom’s show is very, very vulgar and not meant to be anything but politically correct. His show is awesome because its real. Oh yeah.. don’t bother to look for it on the dial. Its too good for terrestrial radio and the pussification of radio today. Your ears will bleed.

Sugarcoating thoughts, limiting freedom of speech. Couldn’t that fall under being politically correct in some way?

    jiggers..

    we all sugarcoat thoughts

    even you :)

and our societal norms certainly limit freedom of speech..

and that in itself is not a bad thing

it’s the oil that moves social conversation along..

i think it’s excessive and/or unrealistic expectations that defines political correctness…

JOB…..I don’t sugarcoat my thoughts.. Its just that most of them don’t make it onto the thread comments for some reason so you can’t read it.

This is one of those silly, timeworn topics that Jiggers likes to post so he can express his own opinions and provoke opposing arguments. And that’s cool – I fully respect what he has to say. But really…discussions about political correctness are soooooo 2007!

P.S. Regarding Tom Leykis, I used to listen to him sometimes. He could be semi-entertaining, yet predictable. Didn’t know he was still alive and kicking…

Most of his callers were weak and misogynistic guys who needed “Dad” Leykis to tell them to (in Leykis’s words), “Dump that b

    .”

Sonoma…What’s so silly? Hundreds of posts here are silly. If you think its silly then why did you respond? You are also clueless about Leykis. If you think that his goal is for men to absolutely hate women, you are soooo wrong. Political correctness exists today in prime fashion in every aspect of life. Don’t say its soooo 2007. Everyone expresses their own opinions but a lot are scared to say what they really want to. And JoB….I do type it down, or maybe, I forgot to hit enter? That’s what it is. Gawd I must be stupid.

Two short years ago this topic on this blog would have had a hundred replies by now. There used to be all kinds of poilitcal related threads. Hehehehehe…

Two years ago there was a presidential election coming up. After the Repubs took a serious a**whuppin’ most of them didn’t care to drop by and discuss how they managed to lose so badly. And they’re still not interested in much besides fake scandals ginned up by losers like Karl Rove and Fox & Friends. So, no, not as much political chat.

Two years ago a very similar thread was taken down, citing a prohibition on the use of racial or ethnic slurs – for any reason, including philosophical discussions as to origin.

maybe we have gotten better at this kind of discussion

does that mean we’ve evolved ?
