WSBKeymasterJust saw that. Later in the afternoon – till I stopped compulsively watching search.twitter.com after an hour or so, when it was obvious an announcement was NOT happening any second after all – somebody pointed out two things: The “Obama-Bayh” bumper sticker was a departure from Obama’s yearlong branding, AND it didn’t have a union label. Both seemed like pretty valid points suggesting a red herring or even possibly a hoax, can’t wait to see how the side story behind it emerges.
Can’t wait to see what you all have to say about Biden, I don’t have any particularly strong memories from his past presidential runs.
The afternoon of watching Twitter dialogue was kind of fun, though. At least a dozen people turned it into a Rick-roll; many other people posted the highly original message, “Bulletin: I’m not Obama’s VP pick.”

charlabobParticipantIt got leaked early so they had to rush out the text messages — actually, it didn’t get leaked — the losers said they’d been told they weren’t it.
I’m delighted! Besides the stuff everyone says about experience, blue-collarness, etc. he’s an attack dog. The president of Georgia (whose name I can’t pronounce or spell) welcomed him last week and said he wanted him to hurry back. Didn’t say the same thing about Lieberman and Gram, the “ambassador” from the other side.
Yup, Biden didn’t vote as I would like on a number of issues — frankly, most of the dems didn’t. I can’t for the life of me understand why we supported the bankruptcy bill, for example. But Obama/Biden are going to dig the country out of the Republican-dug hole and make us all proud again!

i don’t think Biden’s urging Kerry to choose McCain as his running mate in the last election will play well.. even though i thought it would have been a brilliant political move..
Ok.. i said it.
At least he has a lot of experience and has shown concern for the helpless in our society. And he is willing to work with business to get them to pony up in public/private partnerships to achieve his goals.
we could use some of that kind of effort solving a few of our social problems.

charlabobParticipantI just heard about his urging Kerry to choose McCain — I suspect there was more backstory than we knew, and I figured out back in March that neither party was going to nominate anything like a dream-ticket for me. Maybe fewer nightmares?
I DO know what you’re saying, JoB — but, given the other possibilities, excluding Hill, there’s no one I like better. I’m crazy about Chris Dodd, but he always has been and always will be in the pocket of financial industries.
Biden is as blue-collar as they get, he’s feisty, he’s smart, and, I’m sorry — best of all — he’s brilliantly snarky. “Guiliani’s stump speech consists of subject/verb/9-11” is the most frequently quoted line of the primary AND it worked. Virtually every time Rudy said a variation on that theme, the media commented on it, thus diffusing its power.
I’m hoping Obama’s next slightly out-of-box maneuver will be to name a skeleton cabinet–that’s where we can get Dodd/Richardson/Hill if she’ll leave the senate/Warren Buffett/…Sibelius. We have to look for dems who aren’t in office — we can’t afford to lose any ground.
BTW, do you know anything about the Clinton vetting question? I’ve heard from many reliable sources that Bill refused to be vetted — any specifics there? Unfortunately, that could also inhibit Hill’s cabinet selection.

JoBParticipantI am surprised Richardson didn’t get the nod… for the latino vote… and i am not sure attracting disaffected conservatives was worth the risk… but there you go. I wouldn’t have made any of the dream ticket choices;~> no secrets there.

I don’t know about the vetting… i heard the rumor that bill refused to be vetted.. but i have no idea why.
it should have no impact on Hillary if that is the case… but of course it would. Too many think of her as Hill/bill.
I am not sure it would be in her.. or our.. best interests for her to give up her seat in the senate for the cabinet… unless of course she became secretary of state:)
i think she would make a fine supreme court judge;~> i grin anticipating the howls.
your political nose is spot on tho… there is something going on.. but i am truly clueless as to what.

charlabobParticipantI got my email at 1:38 this morning — didn’t sign up for the text message because I didn’t want to sleep with my cell phone under my pillow :-)
I think the deal with vetting the Clintons is that both have to pass — not just because they’re Clintons. Remember the stuff that came out about Ferraro’s husband’s “connections” when she was veep candidate. Apparently, according to people on the Clinton’s team, he doesn’t want to reveal fundraising information for the library and the foundation.

BayouMemberBDG, I’ve never felt so anxious about a political race in my life. After the last 8 years, I’m absolutely terrified of another minute of Republican leadership in this country. I hesitate to get into many of the political threads on this forum because they sometimes make my head feel like it’s going to implode.
I’m hoping that in the coming weeks, Biden’s intelligent and feisty commentary will prove to be the perfect compliment to Obama’s campaign.

WSBKeymasterOK, and I have to say it here and THEN recuse myself from the rest of the political discussion … I tweeted this at the time … it’s my personal sentiment as a person of XX chromosomes who entered the workforce at a time when I was still, for example, the “token woman” on radio station staffs, hired for a weekly overnight shift so they could mark a chart and nominally meet federal standards … and yes, I know a person’s gender is not the measure of their deeds and etc. etc. etc. BUT … I am still bitterly personally disappointed that now it appears that at least 28 years, if not 32 (or more!), will pass between the first and second appearances of a woman on a major-party US prez/vp ticket. Mondale/Ferraro was HALF MY LIFE AGO. I was no particular fan of either one but still, I will never forget sitting in my cheap bug-infested apartment in Davis, California, watching early-era CNN on a tiny TV, weeping at the news.
Of course, I suppose there’s always the possibility this year of McCain/Condi, or some other strong Republican female leader, though I haven’t seen much speculation along those lines lately.
OK, bowing out now, gotta go take some pictures of some festivals … TR

DianeParticipantHey TR; I have very similar feelings, having grown up nearly a decade before you; in my youth and young adult years, hearing everyday, even from females, that women should not work because it would take jobs away from men; we have come so far since the late 60’s in many ways when that was an all too common ideology, along with outright sexism and sexual harassment on the job that was usual practice then; thank god for many positive changes for women in the workplace
~
I was in my 2nd year of college when Shirley Chisholm ran for president, so that really stands out for me even more than Ferraro; and I was a precinct leader in the bay area during the 92 election, where we were pushing for a 10% representation of women in Congress; so it’s great to see we’ve made great strides there also
~
but it is completely and totally baffling, infuriating, that 36 yrs after Chisholm made her bold attempt and statement, that we still have not even had a woman vp
