JiggersMemberI’ve known folks here for a long time here and it amazed me when they told me that the never ever drive out of West Seattle, up onto the bridge and over into downtown. They don’t care and want nothing to do with it. Why? There’s a whole world out there and beyond. I can’t imagine how one’s life goes from here to there and that is it. Just the thought of secluding one’s self to a tiny morsel of life in a pea pod? to each his own I guess. Life experiences can be fun. You know people like that, or are you like that?

CMPParticipantI know some people like that who live in Bellevue and are too afraid to come to the big city across the lake. Sometimes I don’t blame them. Case in point, I was downtown today and saw an older fellow standing at a bus stop on 3rd Ave at Lenora next to a garbage can in broad daylight with his junk hanging out of his pants. I was unlucky enough to have looked down and seen it. Given the block of 3rd Ave I was on, I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised, but I quickly scurried over to 2nd Ave where it’s a bit less creepy. Not exactly what a female wants to see when she’s out shopping and minding her own business.

JanSParticipantI have no need to shop downtown, nor I have a need to eat downtown. I can go to Queen Anne, Capitol Hil for movies. I can find many a good restaurant in my own neighborhood, and it keeps the money in this ‘hood. Yes, periodically, I’m lucky to go to the 5th Ave. Theater, or The Moore, or The Paramount. But…go downtown just to hang out and watch the life abound? Nope..no need to. ( and I work at home, so don’t have to go to work there, either …hehehe)

datamuseParticipantBut downtown has Pike Place! And the Fluevog store! And the symphony! And Kells! And the only place I can find bras that fit!
…yeah, I guess I don’t get it either. Though I usually ride my bike downtown these days. Parking is expensive.

SonomaParticipantReasons to visit downtown:
1. A mini-cruise aboard the water taxi – best, most scenic way to get there and avoid the traffic and ridiculous parking expenses.
2. Walking and admiring the views from the Sculpture Garden and Myrtle Edwards Park (cuz you don’t ALWAYS want to stroll Lincoln Park or Alki).
3. Pike Place Market still enchants even after having been there about 100 times. Even if you don’t spend a penny, you can enjoy the incredible views, the bright bouquets, and the awesome people-watching (which includes the buskers).
4. Architectural gems almost a century old mingling with bright modern towers (some ugly, some worth a second look).
5. Mingling with visitors from around the world who truly appreciate our extraordinary city.

anonymeParticipantI used to live in Belltown and worked downtown for many years, so the downtown appeal has lost it’s luster for me. Passing through is a necessity as I take Metro to medical appointments and such, but downtown is never the primary destination. Part of that is age and an aversion to cigarettes – and filth in general. But I do miss popping over to Uwajimaya on weekends.
It’s a shame that Seattle never got on board with a great civic plan like Portland did. Now there’s a great downtown destination…

JoBParticipantthis weekend i went downtown.
For a little over two hours i vacationed in a very small section of upper pike place..

datamuseParticipantDBP, it’s not nearly as interesting as it sounds. Trust me.

JiggersMemberIf you don’t go to downtown, are you afraid of the people that lurk there? are they different from West Seattleites?
August 13, 2012 at 7:37 pm #766830
JanSParticipantjiggers…afraid? maybe uncomfortable is more like it. I have no qualms about standing at a bus stop at Calif. and Admiral at 9pm at night. I have many qualms about standing at a bus stop almost anywhere on 3rd Ave in the downtown corridor after 7pm at night any night of the week.
August 13, 2012 at 7:43 pm #766831
miwsParticipantSometimes there’s a striking resemblance between the people that lurk Downtown, and the people that lurk in West Seattle…. ;-)

DianeParticipantthere are a few bus stops on 3rd that are very safe at night, in biz district, and 2nd/Columbia
~
but even during the day, 3rd by McDonald’s is ridiculous; live theater of crazy activity
~
3rd @Walgreen’s at night, swirl of druggies, not very enjoyable; there are usually cops around, so not really scary, just annoying, creepy
~
3rd in Pioneer Square even worse at night; at the last artwalk, I hiked north ~ 20 blocks from Inscape (just south of Uwajimaya) up to safe bus stop mid-downtown; pretty absurd
~
city hall keeps talking about cleaning up 3rd Ave; not seeing anything yet

JanSParticipantBeing who I am at the moment, Diane, bussing anywhere is not the best mode of transportation. I remember when I used to work downtown, had to bus home form 1st and Pike when the 55 went that way. Hubby said…the street people will make you feel uncomfortable, but they are harmless, and will never touch you…until one touched me, held onto my arm..scared the crap out of me. Now, with a cane, and moving slowly, I am a target, I’m afeared. I can’t get out of my own way. let alone theirs.
August 13, 2012 at 8:12 pm #766834
JanSParticipantMike…was that you I saw lurking the other night?
August 13, 2012 at 10:48 pm #766835

August 13, 2012 at 11:35 pm #766838
miwsParticipantMmmmmm….pizza shakes!, ;-)

GinaParticipantHave to admit that I am looking forward to the day it is no longer necessary to go downtown several days a week.
August 14, 2012 at 10:19 pm #766843
JiggersMemberNo worry Gina. Once the viaduct is officially torn down, you may never get into downtown whether you want to or not. Waiting for a bus on third avenue between Walgreens, Mcydees up to Virginia Street is fun. It is like a reality show but in person. You got your mental nut jobs, chronic druggies, alcoholics, theft artists, pimps, wannabee gangstahs, real gangstahs, sex offenders..you name it, it is there. But if your gonna let that bother you from enjoying Seattle, you may have some issues yourself.

WorldCitizenParticipantAnd people’s worlds get smaller and smaller and smaller….
