Hi, I am becoming interested in exploring my spirituality/faith. I grew up with a family who is strictly against religion. In fact, they mock it. But, now that I have been more or less estranged, I find myself becoming interested in religion. I honestly didn’t even know there were so many denominations… So, I feel kind of lost on where to start. Obviously, just show up to church… duh. But I’d like to hear about your church and any advice you have? I feel weird for asking but this truly is out of my comfort zone.

Are you open to Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam or others or are you primarily interested in Christianity? The answer to this might help you get better responses.

Yes I think I’m interested in Christianity but maybe other religions. I am not interested in Church of LDS or JW. My interest is geared toward God. Not necessarily Saints. I don’t know much though…

Hi! An alternative to going to a church service is to watch one on line and see what you think. Many WS churches have online services now and it’s a great way to observe (with interaction only if you choose) and see what resonates with you. The WSBlog has a listing of church services each Sunday and tell which have online services as well as in person.
I love my church; we livestream and have in person worship at 10am each Sunday. We are progressive and welcome everyone regardless of where you are in your faith journey. I invite you to watch a service online or come in person if you’d like! You can go to this link https://www.tibbettsumchurch.org/online-worship to watch services from the past or on any Sunday at 10am, or you can go to our YouTube channel TibbettsUMC and the livestream starts at 10am.
Blessings to you as you seek what feels best!

Estrangement is a common theme in American culture, with the most common go-to fixes being religion and/or drugs (they’re essentially the same). It sounds like you’re trying to replace either family (patriarchy?) with another social arrangement rather than seeking truth. Education, self-examination, and working on family rifts are better approaches. Try reading ‘God is Not Great’ by Christopher Hitchens if facts interest you.

Haha religion definitely isn’t a fix. I’m not a believer, I am just interested in seeing a different part of my community that I’ve been very against in the past. I mentioned I am estranged simply because the family I grew up with has always been against religion/God and that rubbed off on me for so long. But without my family’s opinions around me all the time, I get to explore different parts of life I never experienced. There is nothing inherently wrong with me doing just that. I have done a ton of internal work and even then, I still believe I can “seek truth” and explore spirituality. ;)

But thank you for your book recommendation.

Sounds like you’ve got a plan; broadening one’s perspective is never a bad thing. An odd fact (fact, not opinion) to consider when seeking advice on this particular topic is that atheists are generally far more informed on various religions than actual practitioners. Most atheists have done a lot of spiritual exploration before arriving at an a- or anti-theist conclusion. I will say that I’ve known several members of one group of Christians who really impressed me as they were all practice, no preaching – Seventh Day Adventists. These folks really live by their ‘word’ – they’re even vegan.

Finding the right church for you can be a personal process. I’d recommend researching different denominations and their beliefs to see which resonates with you. Visiting churches and attending services is a great way to get a feel for their community and teachings. Don’t hesitate to contact church members or leaders for information or advice.
