katydidMemberI bought a new toilet seat – yay – but I can’t get the old seatbolt off. The problem seems to be that the plastic nut on the metal bolt on one of the seat hinges is stripped or something. I’ve tried both ways: Right=tighty and Lefty=loose to get it off. No luck. The top of the bolt is embedded in plastic and there is no way to uncap or unbolt it from the top.
The seat itsself is now off, but the one bolt remains on the bowl. I can’t saw it, unscrew it or anything else I can think of.
And that porcelin (sp?) seat felt awfully cold in the middle of the night, last night.
Any suggestions/help? Thanks.

mellaw6565MemberFunny about the drilling!! But yes, it’s one way to get it off – drill through the head of it.
There is also a thing I’ve seen on TV (yes a cliche) called the “grab it” I think that is supposed to remove all stripped screws and bolts. Could be just a gimmick….

PDieterParticipant– cut the plastic nut with a utility knife
or
– try and pry the nut downwards with a screwdriver while you turn it (counter clockwise)
or
– if you had an angle grinder or die grinder you could now cut off the bolt head from above with a cut off wheel.
what part of WS do you live?

Bikefor1MemberI used a hacksaw blade when I had that same problem. Sawed it off flush to the porcelain. Came off clean as a whistle. Replaced it with brass bolts.
