Hi everyone. I just noticed a crack in a load bearing beam on the main level of our 1949 home. We cannot tell if the wood is cracked, as it’s painted over but the cracking wraps around the beam. The home has an addition from the 1970’s on top for the master bedroom, which is above that beam. Anyway, of course I’m concerned/paranoid about it collapsing and wondering if that is justified at this point. Also, I’m looking for recommendations of people who would be able to come and inspect the problem etc. Thanks Again.

sounds like just checking in the wood

Checking is a separation of the wood fibers along the grain. This occurs when wood is pressure treated or seasoned, as the fibers expand and contract and internal pressures build up. You can think of checks as small earthquake faults that have shifted in order to equalize internal pressures.

The larger (dimensionally, not in length) a piece of lumber is, the more likely it is that this will occur. I am unaware of any method to prevent this. There is a picture and description of this and other “normal” defects here:

Can you send me a picture of this crack? I’m a licensed home inspector and a woodworker. I can probably tell you if you should be concerned.
