Would you be able to do something like this?

The finished product is quite attractive.

It sounds like a project that could be accomplished with a handsaw, depending on how large it is and how much working room you have around it. Maybe do a bit each week until it’s gone, or less horrendous. ;)

alki-2008, my husband used that exact same tool (he calls it a saws-all) to take out an entire hillside of old very ugly juniper. First he sawed off all of the branches and the top of the main trunk, then dug down to cut and pull out as much of the rootball as possibly. I’ve heard of people just attaching the juniper to a pickup truck and pulling, but we have a 100 year old cement retaining wall we didn’t want to pull out with the junipers. The soil under the juniper is really dry and acidic, perfect for horsetail weeds which proliferated. We took out the juniper in 2001, now our hillside is overflowing with lavendar, bearded irises, geraniums, daylilies (a hodgepodge of plants). We’re very happy we got rid of the juniper.

Thanks Alki-2008 and WSMom for your responses. I guess that I didn’t adequately describe the size of our Juniper :) My guess is that it is about 12 ft x 8 ft in size and has probably been there since the beginning of time (or at least 1948 when our house was built!). I realize that I could probably do this myself by taking a bit out at a time, but I was hoping to just hire someone to come and do it for me and get it over with. It is HUGE, it is an EYESORE, and I would like to have it removed and spend my time and energy rebuilding that area. It takes up literally 2/3 of our front yard! The other 1/3 we’ve already ripped up the existing grass and built two raised beds and a flagstone path….

Thanks again! But does anyone have a suggestion for a removal company or person. :)

I had Ken’s Yard Service remove juniper from two different yards. It was over a decade ago, they did a good job, and it was a reasonable price at that time. Hasn’t grown back at either house.

We did our 3 in the planter strip last year with a heavy tow cable & the truck. Pulled those ugly things out!

Nice R26! I have read many posts on the web about pulling them out with a truck, sadly we don’t have a truck, just a puny little VW :) Maybe I could bribe a friend….I’m not sure they make tow cables big enough for this bush though, it is massive.

As an update, in case anyone has this issue in the future, I have contacted three companies that claim that they do this sort of work. All three offered to come by and give me an estimate. I’ve only heard back from one of them but the quote was $459 and they will haul away all of the debris. Seems pretty reasonable to me considering the size of the plant but I’m still hoping to hear from anyone that has had this done before! I’ll let you know what the other bids come in at.

We had Out On a Limb do some work for us awhile back – took out a huge holly tree, cut down a large bushy hazelnut and some other trimming work that required ropes and climbing. It came in at about $400. They have a $300 minimum bid – or at least did when I had the work done. If they’re not on your list already it might be worth contacting them, too. http://www.outonalimbseattle.com/contactus.html

We had a similar problem with a large yucca plant- my husband trimmed all of the off shoots and then dug a circle around the root ball. He tried to get that thing out of the ground himself, but it was too heavy (hubby is strong, rootball was stronger though!). We tied a rope around it (well, he did), attached the rope to his Explorer and gave it a nice gentle tug with the car. After snapping the rope (yikes), we tried again and then the root ball was out of the ground. If you are concerned about using your car, you could always rent a van from UHaul for the day and use that to pull it out! Then you can put the rootball in there and head to the dump without getting your car dirty. $500 seems like a lot to me for this kind of work.

#ElegantPainting – It might not be too late to save your marriage!! :-) Call my friend Tim. Awesome, local West Seattle landscaper/gardener who is good for all things out-of-doors. His cell is 206-510-4236. Nice fella, super reasonable rates.
