casabobaMemberI had a similar experience at lunch at Chemo’s two weeks ago. My skirt-steak tasted like shoe leather.

tom kelleyParticipantI ate there twice last week and it was great. I guess anyone can have a bad day.

DonaLuisaMemberWhile I am not certain of its regional flavor, we really enjoyed the healthy and tasty dining in Georgetown recently at the Mexican restaurant/caterer Fonda la Catrina, 5905 Airport Way S; fondalacatrina.com — best guacamole I’ve had in ages with lovely handmade tortillas (we watched them being made).

anonymeParticipantEl Sabor de Oaxaca (different name on outside of building) is wonderful. They serve huitlacoche, although at this time of year it’s canned. Their chorizo is delicious and unlike any other I’ve tried. I’m anxious to try Fonda la Catrina, just noticed it was open the other day. The La Fondita truck in White Center is a reliable source for asada burritos.

cbofParticipantWow, there’re some strong opinions on Mexican food… Imho, there’s a relatively new place place down in Des Moines that’s fantastic, if you’re up to making the treck. It’s called Arturo’s, right there on the main drag, at the intersection of 222nd. He prides himself on using fresh ingredients, and tries for supporting local food. Give it a try!

john mooreMemberI have been very happy with everything I ever ordered at “The Cactus” on Alki. Not inexpensive, and almost clinical in appearance. However, one appetizer was gourmet quality! Bacon-wrapped peppers? I don’t remember… some kind of peppers… wonderful service, food was great, location was charming, not cheap. “Prom-Night” Mexican…
The place across from End-o-the-Line Joe’s” was very reasonable but had no more Mexican atmosphere than “Cactus”, but was on the opposite end of the “clinical” scale. It looked as though I had woken up in the middle of a bad AA meeting! Blank sheetrock walls and church-basement tables… all it lacked were the ashtrays! Good service, very good chimichangas, big margarita, pretty cheap. It had that “dive” charm…
Seriously, I liked both places. I can never go back to Puerta Vallarta. The only time I went there (about six years ago), we were seated at a table in front of which a large amount of food had been spilled on the carpet some time earlier. Ground into the carpet by people walking through. Our waitress stood in this every time she came to our table, and it was still there when we left. I should have hauled all of the staff out there and showed them how to clean it up. I thought, “If THIS is how clean they are in FRONT of me, how dirty is the are BACK THERE where I can’t see?!!
You want outstanding steak nachos and margaritas and shrimp ceviche? Go to The Matador! You won’t be disappointed…

anonParticipantNot WS but I second Fonda La Catrina in Georgetown. Service can be spotty, particularly on busy weekend nights, but the food is outstanding.

john mooreMemberI went back to “The Place Across From EOL Joe’s” which I now know is “The Guadalahara”. I gave them a good review before but I poked fun at them and said they had “dive charm” and that it “looked like an AA meeting”.
It looks to me like when I was there before, they were so busy that they could only offer me a back corner that they don’t even normally use.
This time was about a week ago late on Sunday afternoon. I took my wife there and we ate in the cantina. It had real Mexican charm and not “dive charm”. I took my wife there because she liked it before. It is our third time there and we have been very happy with everything. I like the chimichangas and the margaritas. Prices are good.
