Setting: A sunny Saturday morning on the beach walk of Lincoln park.

Characters: A new mom with adorable newborn and dotting grandparents and uncle.

The scene: A morning stroll took a turn for the lucky when a penny was spied on the walkway – it was not heads up but was unique looking. Turns out it was an wheat back penny from 1945. What a find!! We all counted ourselves lucky that day and continued on our walk.

Low and behold, three feet ahead we spied another. And another. And another. Our luck abounded! In the end our crew found 13 wheat back pennies spanning from 1940-1949. What a unique and interesting way to start our weekend.

We wondered, did someone place these pennies three feet apart and wait for the lucky crew to stumble upon them? Was this the most awesome prank ever?!?

We will never know, but we counted ourselves very lucky that day and ever so fitting as the dotting grandfather was already starting a coin collection for his new grandson – these would be the perfect addition with the best back story.

That IS a great story. Double check for a 1943 real copper penny. Those are worth in the tens of thousands of dollars in decent shape! Even some of the steel pennies are worth a good chunk.

I can’t claim credit for these, but I do sometimes drop pennies here and there for others to find. :)

Best trick I have seen is where someone uses epoxy or super glue to attach a penny, or perhaps even a quarter to the concrete :)

it’s a long ways down to bend for that penny when your joints keep trying to freeze
