cjboffoliParticipantI was surprised today when my yard waste pick-up was refused. They didn’t check off a reason on the little slip they left. But it was a first for me in years of curbside pickups as I’m fairly meticulous about following the recycling and yard waste guidelines.
When I called they told me that they were concerned about the “white powder” in my yard waste container. When I explained that it was simply wheat flour they told me that they refuse to dump a container like that because the powder might blow around and they don’t want to get in trouble for messing up the alley. I guess I can understand that, though the alley post-garbage pick-up is usually pretty littered anyway. I suppose I should be grateful in this day and age that they didn’t call in a haz-mat team.
Just wanted to warn people to cover up your white powder foodstuffs or dump them into a paper bag first.

WSBKeymasterWe actually HAD a white-powder hazmat earlier today – over by the Bank of America on Admiral. Determined to be drugs, not flour.

austinMemberThey don’t want to get in trouble for trash blowing around the alley? What a joke, I spend two days after every trash day picking up all kinds of random garbage that they couldn’t manage to get into the truck. I’ve never lived anywhere with as much trash on the sidewalks and in the street before I moved onto this block. Why would they make an exception for flour?

cjboffoliParticipantaustin: Same thing in my alley. After the pick-ups there’s trash strewn all over the place. It looks like a scene from WALL-E.

inactiveMemberHa! I just brought in a handful of crap that yesterday’s wind picked up and delivered from all over the alley. And, they’ll be more next Wednesday, no doubt.

SmittyParticipantAnother issue I have – although I understand why they do it – is they always squeeze my regular garbage lid down inside the empty can. It never fits back on correctly without a lot of re-shaping!
I suppose if they didn’t do that they might blow away – but why not just secure the lid with the latches? Over the course of a daily route it probably would add quite a bit of time, I suppose.

CarsonParticipantThats pretty funny Chris because I sanded my hardwood floors and put all the sawdust in my recycle bin, it was blowing all over the place when they tipped my can. I felt a little guilty. Very little.

Fryer oil, according to the recycle web site of SPU, is supposed to be mixed with kitty litter or other absorbent material and then placed in the trash. That pretty much precludes any recycling…
General Biodiesel at 6333 1st Ave South, has a drop off for oil. I will investigate hours and how easy it is to find and repost here. The owners may still live in WS so if enough people are interested, perhaps a WS drop point can be arranged.
