Has anyone used a day worker from out front of the Home Depot on Delridge? What is the going hourly rate for a worker….basic outdoor work, yard clean-up?

We don’t hire from Home Depot, etc., but we are regulars at Casa Latina. We feel better with vetted workers and knowing that the organization helps with training and other support. The going rate for laborers is $16, I think, with a 5-hour minimum. They also have “Skilled Gardeners” who are awesome with pruning and other tasks that it helps to know something about. And painters, tilers, etc. Call early for weekend workers. They usually need to use your tools.

Totally agree with above. I have used them for years and they are always great. Also, they have an excellent
    housekeeper service.

I love Casa Latina and used them a lot several years ago. The workers I have used from there are very hard working and appreciative of the work. The problem is Casa Latina is now posting the minimum rate at $19/hour, up to $23/hour. That rate seems high for tax-free, cash income. I would gladly use them often if the rate were $16/hour.

I don’t think the rate is high at all considering the work they are usually asked to do. Hard work by hard workers deserves a good wage.

“tax free cash income” Does anyone else question the legality of this?. Legal residents? In another post two college guys are looking for the same kind of work so the Americans won’t do it argument doesn’t fly.

Agree with Tom. A lot of people who do this type of work struggle to survive on way less than $16 per hr., and they are paying taxes and appropriate licensing fees. Does Casa Latina bond or insure these workers? If not, and they suffer an injury on your property, you would be liable for medical costs and possible lawsuits.

A little bit of research and looking at Casa’s website should answer all your questions without jumping to conclusions. We have hired non-latino AND latino workers – we are bound by the same rules for casual labor. Please do your homework before jumping to conclusions. If you are an employer then appropriate tax information is required, but presuming many of you who like to pay cash – it is up to the worker to file any income. Put away the pitchforks. These are not the workers/droids you are looking for, move along now…..

I pay $25 for these workers. I don’t care if they are documented or not. They have a powerful work ethic. They work hard and deserve a comparable wage. The young people I have hired in the past didn’t know how to do much and didn’t know the meaning of hard work.

I went to Home Depot on Delridge last week to hire a day worker. On the way there I passed by Fauntleroy Starbucks and saw a guy selling Real Change papers. I wondered if he might want some work so I offered him $20/hour. He turned down the work, so I went on to hire a guy out front of Home Depot. Very pleased with the worker I hired, his work ethic, and his skill level for $20/hour. In fact I have him and his friend back this weekend for more outdoor projects.

Schmitz Park Dad .. the guy who was selling Real Change was already working.
And in spite of what he looked like to you..he may or may not have been up to the work you wanted to hire him to do.

I am glad you found a couple of guys in front of Home Depot who worked out for you.

    I have had mixed results…
