UrbanFabulousParticipantAnyone else get an insanely high City Light bill? for Mar-June it was $850! That’s by far the most we’ve ever been billed and we’ve had no projects or anything.

kgdlgParticipantDo you mean SPU?
If not are you growing MJ?
Otherwise that is absurd, we pay less than 100 every other month for elec in summer. We have a small house though.

shihtzuParticipantMine is weird too. Not high, but the last bill seemed high at $166. This bill is only $66. Odd.
Something is definitely up with yours!

SmittyParticipantSomething is funny, I would give them a call.
My family of 4 in a ~3,000 sqft house hit a high of $350 this winter and my last bill was $175.
Check any outdoor outlets for pot-growing neighbors OR possibly any construction going on and the builder hooked up his equipment to the wrong outlet.

UrbanFabulousParticipantI guess I do mean SPU. It looks like I actually owe them over $1,000 because their automatic billing didn’t take June’s payment. Also, this bill is for 4 months instead of the usual 2. The last bill for Dec-Mar was due June 5, and this bill for Mar-June is due July 18th. SO WEIRD.
Our next door neighbors are flipping the house, but they’d have to run power cords through our yard and I haven’t noticed anything strange like that.

kgdlgParticipantSadly we have the most expensive water/sewer/garbage in the country. So your bill for almost 6 months of SPU sounds normal for Seattle. We pay about 280 every two months in spring and summer and this is largely because we water our garden a lot and have a toddler who bathes nightly. Good luck!

UrbanFabulousParticipantKgdlg- I would agree if those three services were included in this bill. That would make sense! However, this is *just* power. I pay three separate companies for water, sewer and garbage: SPU for water, SW Suburban for Sewer, and Recycology for garbage.

kgdlgParticipantUrban you said this was an SPU bill. if is is SPU it is NOT for power it is for water. Is it an SCL (power) an SPU (water) bill?
June 29, 2014 at 8:16 am #810254
JanSParticipantSW Suburban Sewer is more for White Center, Burien, Sea-Tac…you must live very close to there…

SmittyParticipantThe fact that your neighbors are flipping their house is worth investigating. You never know if you have an outdoor outlet hidden in some bushes or along a fence. It’s worth doing a walk-around.
Not that they are doing it on purpose – it just seems little too convenient.
June 29, 2014 at 3:02 pm #810256
UrbanFabulousParticipantIt’s City Light. And we live just South of Westwood Village, about a block over the Burien border.

kgdlgParticipantSounds like you are in unincorporated king not burien. If SCL I would call – that def sounds off. If it were SPU I was going to suggest you have a water leak somewhere.
June 29, 2014 at 4:32 pm #810259
trickycooljParticipantWas it SCL that adjusted their billing periods recently? I just got one of my bills later than normal because of that. The other thing that happened at my previous apartment is that they only read the actual meter once a year and estimated the bill the rest if the year. So when they came and did a real meter read the bill would be very different. My new house has a digital meter that I presume sends the numbers directly to SCL. Might be worth jotting down your meter numbers for the next cycle and making sure the bill reflects what you see. And maybe you can catch spikes in your bill, like someone leeching your outdoor plug when you’re away or at night.

WSBKeymasterBonnie offered this guess but couldn’t get it into the thread:

She points to a story we ran last month about a change in billing dates and how that might lead to uneven bills:
