Hello, I am looking for recommendations on a WS daycare center or LICENSED in home daycare. I will need care for a 12 week old beginning in November 2010. I may have started my search a little too late since the waiting lists are massive or I’m just not receiving a returned call or email. Any suggestions?

    Try here:

    http://www.childcare.org/

For a small fee you can search their database of licensed centers and in-home care providers. From my recollection from 5 years ago, the list is pretty extensive. However, it is still crucial (as I’m sure you are aware) to visit prospective placements several times before signing on. Also, make sure you drop-in unannounced at least once as well (after establishing contact and interest). I know that I found quite a few places that were utilizing TV (that said they didn’t), and were more disorganized than I was comfortable with.

Good luck to you! It is a tricky situation.

I know that the wait-list is closed but if you have an opportunity to get into the ILC at Providence Mount St. Vincent, take it! I cannot speak highly enough of this wonderful place!

I am in the same boat, but am looking for daycare starting in February 2011 for a 8 month old. Every place I have contacted has a wait list of at least 2 years for infant care, and don’t even try Providence, they have 500 families waiting! I have been told that the best bet until they are 2-ish is to hire a nanny or join another family in a nanny share. Good luck on your search!!

I had a great experience with Step by Step. They are located in the Admiral District. My two preschoolers attended last year and now my infant has gone there a couple of days (when his nanny has called in sick). Their number is 206 933 7528, the owner is Yanneth. Tell Manuela referred you!

I just wanted to present another option. Have you considered hosting an au pair? We have used an au pair for our child care needs for the past 4 years and love it. They are less expensive then nannies and provide a great cultural exchange for you family. I feel like we have a member of the family caring for our children and not having to get them up and take them somewhere each day is priceless. I am the local coordinator for Cultural Care Au Pair, so if you want more information please don’t hesitate to give me a call. We have over 25 families just in West Seattle. It is a great community.

Thank you for the replies. I already registered for childcare.org, but thanks for the tip.

We are trying to avoid a nanny because our offices are in our home. We are in outside sales so are out on sales calls most of the day and then work for a few hours in our home office. I don’t I’d be able to do as well at my job if I had the distraction of being able to hear my child while I’m working.

Between working from our home office, the nursery, and our bedroom, we are out of extra bedrooms for an au pair, so we would not be able to host anyone in our home.

I will reach out to Yanneth. I saw her business on childcare.org. Thank you!

Just wanted to say, don’t let the long waiting lists discourage you too much. Get on them, and you might very well get lucky. People’s circumstances change, they find other childcare arrangements, they move, their kids age out of the placement they were waiting for, all sorts of things happen that can bump you to the head of the line without you knowing. When my daughter was born I waited until the very last minute to find childcare–she was already 3 months old and I was going back to work full time when she was 4 months old–so I found a place I liked, got on the waiting list, and we got in about 6 weeks later. Fortunately my workplace was flexible enough to make that work, but if you have a home office maybe you can be too.

    lots of great suggestions

I think one reason most wait lists are super long is the panic, so most expectant families get on every list, then have to pick just one in the end, which opens up other center lists to waiting families

I work with infants doing on-call child care, and have heard from many West Seattle families that they found fabulous sort of unknown/secret family daycares via child care resources (mentioned above)

A rare infant spot is available now at Learning Way School and Daycare-call and take a tour. I know the staff and owner-good, good people and absolutly dedicated to childcare and education for their staff-who are mostly long term employees.

Take tours and spend some time hanging out in the baby room and make your own decision.

Check out Growing Foot Prints Learning Center. It is an in-home day care facility. Very nurturing, caring, educational. The care provider is fabulous with the children. We have been very happy with the care provided for our 2.5 year old. She cares for a couple of infants as well. Email: growingfootprints@gmail.com

    Hi there,

My husband and I will be new parents in September and I am hoping to watch another child to supplement my income. I have been a nanny for the past three years but feel it would be beneficial to have my baby around another infant for social and developmental reasons. I will graduate this summer with a degree in Social Sciences, but with the high cost of daycare find it discouraging to even start a career in that field until he/she starts school. Please keep me in mind if you or anyone you know would like to chat with me about possible care beginning December 2010 or January 2011. Thanks!

My son is one of the infants at Growing FootPrints and I am extremely happy with how he is doing and how he is cared for there. I would highly recommend them and would be happy to answer any questions.

amhgreen (or anyone else out in WSBland reading this)…I will be in need of a nanny or care provider of some sort this December ’10 or January ’11. I am expecting twins this July and plan to stay home with them until the New Year. At that point, because we’re having two, and daycare will more than likely be very cost prohibitive, we’re thinking more along the lines of an in home nanny versus a daycare provider. If this is somthing that you or anyone else would be interested in (our home or your home – either is negotiable) for maybe 3-5 days a week, please let me know. I’d appreciate any information or referrals. Thanks!

You could try the daycare at the West Seattle YMCA. They have infant care there.
