WSBKeymaster(**Thread originally started with this “bug,” now fixed, on to the “inactive” one, scroll down)
I’ve received two notes today from people who apparently are seeing our mobile design (basically a list of story headlines for the main section) when they weren’t expecting to. We have been making various tweaks to work with the site-load issue so there’s always a chance that has affected the viewing format for some browser or another – however, neither person has told us what browser they’re using, and they are the only people who’ve e-mailed, so I thought I’d ask here if anyone else is seeing the mobile design unexpectedly, and if so, what browser/OS you’re on … thank you.
(I am currently also testing the site through one of those “here’s what you look like on every browser imaginable” services, but that takes a while.)

shed22ParticipantOperating on Chrome. All is well. Thanks, WSB.

hopeyParticipantSometimes when I use my iPad to look at websites, I’ll get served the mobile version because their OS sniffer thinks I’m on an iPhone. I wonder if a similar problem occurs with other devices, such as the Galaxy Tab? (WSB loads normally on my iPad.)

wundrgrrrlParticipantI’m on Firefox and all is okay…

WSBKeymasterThanks, one of the two people has since responded that she is on an iPad … we asked the only person we know with an iPad to check on his and he says all is well. So, another exciting mystery. We’ll keep looking. Also while we’re talking quirks, two forum regulars say their usernames are displaying to them with “INACTIVE” instead of “member” … I checked on both and both show to me, logged in OR out, as “member” … but if you see anything weird anywhere (well, technically weird, anyway) please do let us know, don’t assume we must already know about it … thanks.

Oh that’s funny … I just posted this and now I am appearing to myself as “inactive.” Well, at least as they say in the biz, it’s a “replicable error”!
March 14, 2011 at 5:05 am #720233
shed22ParticipantI, too, am now showing as “inactive”.

WSBKeymasterOur Super Ace Tech Person is working on this sudden bug. It may be an offshoot of us changing the caching “plug-in” – pages should load faster but then there’s this bizarre spinoff. Should NOT be affecting whether your posts display, AND the only person who sees you as “inactive” is … you! Trust me, everybody else sees you as “member.” Sorry about that, we’ll nail this puppy down. And we did fix the “somebody out there somewhere was seeing the mobile design” thing. What’s that old saying, impossible to fix something without unintentionally breaking something else …

celeste17ParticipantWhen I was viewing your site on my phone (android) earlier it was giving me the mobile version even though I was telling it to load as a regular page.

metrognomeParticipantas long as it isn’t this kind of bug, we’re probably ok …
March 14, 2011 at 3:41 pm #720238
redblackParticipantoh noes! i’m inactive!
it appears to just be the text, though. the link works fine: when i click “inactive” it’s the same as clicking “member” before, and i can access my profile info.
last version of firefox 3, on windows xp pro, btw.
[edit: don’t know if this happens on anyone else’s screen, but the home | about | etc. link bar under the WSB logo is now two lines, with white on the first line, and center | forums on the second line, left justified.
it could be because i load my own fonts, i suppose…]

SueParticipantI’m one of the people who emailed about the inactive thing. When not logged in it says member, but as soon as I log in, it flips to inactive.
Another thing I noticed this morning on my android phone was that the main page would not let me see the responses to posts. I’d click and it looked as if something happened (more space on the page, but no comments. When I tried to reply here it said to log in, but would not respond to my clicking to submit my name/password. Now (2 hrs later) all is well on the phone view. (Other than the inactive thing.)

JustSarahParticipantAs long as we’re talking about bugs… I remember quite a while back, the forums would load in a neat mobile format on my iPhone. For the past many months (probably at least 7-8 months?) the page no longer loads like that. The home page still loads in mobile format on my phone, but if I go to the forums it loads as a normal website, and thus the posts are not reformatted to fit the iPhone screen.
Is that normal for others viewing the forums on mobile devices?
Not a big deal, but since the mobile format has been brought up I figured I’d ask. :-)

SueParticipantSarah, when I load the Forum on my phone (android), the screen shows a list of all the categories, and I have to scroll down past all of them to see the list of the most recent forum posts. when I click on a post, it fits the screen without having to turn it, but it’s definitely not the same neat interface that the main site is on my phone.
redblack, that bar also breaks for me at home in the middle of White Center, but I attributed it to the fact that I’m on my netbook and the screen is smaller. At work now on my 17″ screen, it’s all one line. However, I’m using IE at work and Firefox at home, so perhaps that’s part of it. I’ll have to take a look later at my netbook using IE to see if it’s any difference.
March 14, 2011 at 4:40 pm #720242
JustSarahParticipantThanks, Sue! My iPhone will also show that long list of topics at the top of the forums page, but only while loading the page – once it’s fully loaded, the list disappears. Posts almost fit within the boundaries of the screen, but not quite, so I either do a little back-and-forth scrolling or turn the phone sideways to see the whole thing.

WSBKeymasterWithout getting too detailed, the forum and main site are on slightly different content-management systems, although the former is supposed to work with the latter – the problem is that the mobile format was designed to work with the main system but not necessarily the forum system (this is all open-source software developed by fine people for mass use). Our last couple of Ace Tech People have made some tweaks to try to get them to play together as well as possible but it’s still not perfect, our apologies, but thanks for mentioning when you detect tech weirdness … sometimes I worry that there might be something widespread but everyone would think “oh maybe it’s just me” and nobody would tell us! Anyway, current Ace Tech Person (the most amazing help yet, as his specialty is WordPress with a news focus, and he has written some custom things like coupon-page format where you can share/e-mail individual coupons) is looking into this bug.
It’s not fully functional yet but he also has come up with a better way for us to display tweets in the sidebar for those who care – the previous third-party “widget” was helping bog down pageload; it’s gone now and the tweets are being fed from inside our content system (though it’s a soft-launch, there is a time-stamp and lag issue at the moment).

SueParticipantI did check just now to see if the menu bar wraps onto 2 lines (breaking up white center on two lines) in IE on my netbook, and it does appear as one line. But when I go back to firefox, it’s on two lines. No big deal to me (nor any of the “bugs” I’ve reported), but wanted to let you know for troubleshooting purposes.

redblackParticipanti wanted to respond to HMC rich in the $5 gas thread, but it says i must log in to post, and shows no text box.
obviously, i am logged in.
it’s the only thread that’s doing that, as far as i can tell.
[edit: my posts are not being shown as the latest post on the main forum page – but if i go to the sub-topics pages (politics, open discussion, etc.), my posts appear as “latest” normally.
hello? am i invisible? maybe i really am inactive! :O ]
[edit again: never mind. other than a disappearing comment on the front page (which may not have cleared the queue yet) all appears normal.]
March 15, 2011 at 3:54 pm #720246
JoBParticipantredblack…
my comments temporarily disappear from time to time
and for some reason i have to repeatedly log in some days..
i try not to take it personally

SueParticipantTR, someone else posted in another thread about a new bug – they’re unable to reply here.
March 15, 2011 at 4:47 pm #720248
SueParticipantThen there’s the long-standing bug that the main page started putting my messages into spam (or making them disappear altogether, never posting and never showing up in spam). I had been in touch with TR about it in the past, and the only way around it seemed to be to put a different email address in, and change the URL for my business link to a tinyurl link (which redirects to my site) because somehow the behind-the-scenes computer stuff decided it hated the name of my business (which is also in my email address) and that it was spam or sent into space. Very odd.

TDeParticipantUsing the latest version of Explorer.. via MSN… and I’m showing “Inactive.”
March 15, 2011 at 5:15 pm #720250
datamuseParticipantThe pages may be loading faster but they aren’t always loading the latest version; I’ve had to refresh three times now to see updated Forum listings and replies to posts.
Also, after I logged in, it was showing that I wasn’t when I went to post a reply, until (again) I refreshed.
I’m using Firefox 3.6.15 on Windows 7.
March 15, 2011 at 5:39 pm #720251
MargLMemberThe randomness of this issue makes me wonder if it’s a problem with just one server, or maybe a caching problem… There was a minute there where I was actually marked active again “Welcome MargL!” so I logged off and tried to log in again and I saw myself marked Inactive.
March 15, 2011 at 8:06 pm #720252
datamuseParticipantBtw Redblack, the menu bar wraps for me too and I’m not loading my own fonts. It always does on this machine, but not on my Macbook at home (using Firefox on both). Dunno why.
