miwsParticipantWasn’t that an Arthur Treacher’s? I am very vaguely remembering the one you mention, perhaps at the location that has long time now been a Skipper’s?
I remember others in the Puget Sound region, and I believe they may have been a national chain, or at least covering several states.
I also want to say that they were about the first in the area to offer malt vinegar to squirt on the fish, (and chips, if you’re like me), when all of the other places only offered a lemon wedge.

wakefloodParticipantYeah, Mike, I actually don’t think it was Arthur Treachers. I remember that after seeing AT’s in other cities and wondering if they were related to the ones here but having a different name.
It might still come to me. :-)

wakefloodParticipantIt might have even had an “&” in it like “Somebody & Somebody”…

wakefloodParticipantAha! Thanks metro, it was H. Salt Esquire, Fish & Chips.
Ok, I can stop breaking my brain now…

metrognomeParticipantde nada. Amazing what is on Wikipedia, although I was disappointed there is not a page on Vernell’s Butter Mints. There is a family rumor that my mom was one of their first employees; I did a bunch of research but could not confirm it (there is a FB page Vernell’s for ret’d employees, but since I refuse to join, I couldn’t contact the family. There’s also a 1950’s KING-TV documentary I couldn’t access.) One of the most interesting things was the history of Vernell’s as it wandered through buyouts, restructuring, etc. similar to Arthur Treachers, plus it’s connections to QFC, Van de Kamps bakery (used to be one in the Junction), etc. Just found out the co. still owns the old Pay ‘N Pak site in B’vue worth approx. $15mil. Bet those names send miws’ brain on a trip down memory lane.

miwsParticipantYes!!
Thanks, metrognome! H. Salt Esq!
It seems so obvious now, so it was probably stuck somewhere in the memory banks, but not sure if it ever would have come to mind without a boost.
Also, although I remembered Google is my friend, I for some reason forgot that Wiki is as well.
Although, come to think of it, I don’t think I put “Arthur Treacher’s” within the search parameters on Google, only “fish and chips+Burien”, and” fish and chips+Seattle”. I then focused more on images, hoping to spot an old sign.
I did however, search for Treacher’s within HistloryLink, and the UW Digital Collection.

metrognomeParticipantI did a little further research, now that we know the name of the shop. I found a treasure trove in the Seattle Times pre-1990 archives (using ‘H. Salt Esq.’). The results were mostly ads, want ads and a few stories, but you have to have a delivery or on-line subscription to view anything but thumbnails. I perused several pages of results until I finally saw the address of the ‘Seattle’ store: 14821 Ambaum Blvd. (west side of street.) Doh! Burien wasn’t incorporated until 1993. Aztec Studios, a web design firm, is at that address now.

metrognomeParticipantwakeflood — if you hurry, you can get your very own H. Salt Esq. Milk Glass Mug on e-bay:

or your very own HSQ thermometer for making your own fish&chips:

GinaParticipantIf you have a Seattle Public Library card, free complete access to the Seattle Times Historical database online is part of the deal.

wakefloodParticipantYou guys are cracking me up!! I love the intertubes!
I remember a not unique Saturday in my youth would have included errands to Pay N’ Pak and/or Pay N’ Save, with a side trip to Lamont’s and grabbing take out from H. Salt for dinner. :-)
Thanks for the memories…

trueblueMemberI remember that often our “family night out” was a trip to the Jolly Troll restaurant in Burien. My brother and father would try to “get their money’s worth” out of the buffet and of course there were the mechanical trolls who were busy working away while we ate. Brings back a lot of memories…and a little indigestion.

wakefloodParticipantWow, hadn’t thought of the Troll in forever. One the last of those era buffets.
I remember standing in line at Lamont’s to get Zeppelin tix in the mid 70’s. Does anyone still stand in line for concert tix anymore??

GoGoParticipantI remember camping out outside the Paramount for hours and hours waiting to get into the $1 Catch a Rising Star concerts. Saw Elvis Costello for a buck!!
