JeannieParticipantI agree re Coffee to a Tea cupcakes – yummy! And the employees are genuinely cool, without the attitude. Plus, it’s kid-friendly, but not in a loud, out-of-control way.
October 2, 2009 at 5:50 am #676835HMC RichParticipantMy bicycle is a piece of art. Sitting in one spot gleaming when the sun splashes it with light. It is a magnificent piece of technology. The only way it gets ruined is when I use it. It is a machine but it cannot win in a collision with a car. Bikes don’t hurt people, people hurt people. . . well usually. There are some exceptions.
Remember, cyclists have very little protection. Less if they don’t cycle defensively. A woman died up on high point last year. Too many of us are rude. I don’t want anyone getting hurt. The roads were built for mostly motorized vehicles and those who choose to ride do so at more of a risk. We have to be careful but if somebody in a car or a bike is dumb, well the cyclist has a better chance of getting hurt AND they should be able to take some criticism.
I still say cyclists should be taxed or bike toll booths should be put in place. Maybe they should be forced to have bicycle insurance too! Also they should start making the helmets out of the same stuff that is on a car’s license. Big brudda will be watchin’ for yuse. Do bikers get speeding tickets too? The last paragraph was meant to be in fun just in case you have lost your sense of humor.

hollyplaceParticipantCMP – I can’t believe it. I also found a huge hairball in my soup at Buddah Ruska. We use to go there all the time, and then a huge wad of hair – like from the bottom of the drain was wrapped around the chicken in my Tom Ka Gai soup. I haven’t been able to eat the soup anywhere since. Oh how love Thai food. I complained and they only offered me more soup and didn’t take it off our bill! Yuck! I am even more concerned that someone else found a wad of hair in their food too. Ewe!

swimcatMemberIf smoking had been banned from all bars when I was in my 20’s, I probably would have gone out a lot more than I did. I hated coming home smelling like stale smoke, with stinging eyes. YUCK. There were only a handful of bars that were smoke free before the smoking ban- there weren’t many options but I’d always try to go to those places rather than a bar like the Mecca, the Corner Pocket or the Poggey. If my friends decided to go to a super smokey bar, I’d usually just head home for the night. I always thought it was completely unfair that I would miss out hanging out with my friends because others felt the need to smoke, smoke, smoke and my only option was to put up with the stink or miss out on the fun.

September 26, 2009 at 2:43 am #678197sacatoshParticipantCJB if you end up being adopted by this kitty, there’s a product I highly recommend. It’s called Outright Allergy Relief and can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/yb5a6fg or at Petco or the like. My HIGHLY allergic (as in, throat swelling shut after less than 5 minutes in my house) ex was able to sleep with the cats cuddled up after I washed them with the stuff. You have to do it weekly, but kitties get used to it – esp if you just dampen a washcloth and give them a good rubdown. Sortof like a giant mama cat…
September 25, 2009 at 3:49 am #678108In reply to: IPHONE LOVE! Share your favorite apps and uses
BookGalParticipantHere are some that I have…a lot of these apps are free versions, and have full (pay) versions. If there’s a free version – and it looks like an interesting app… give it a try. You can always delete it… or upgrade to a full pay version later.
1. Shazam – hold your iPhone up to the radio and find out what song is playing and the artist! It works, and its fun to use.
2. Shop Notes – “grocery” list app (you can customize and add items to the lists too)
3. Sportacular (free) – for those who want to keep track of their sport teams and game scores. Can be customized with your favourite teams.
4. Tipulator – generates how much of a tip to leave.
5. Currency – Dollars to Pounds, Euros, Yuan, Yen…or vice versa!
6. Battery Magic – free version now has annoying ads… pay version is fairly inexpensive. It tells you how much life is left in the battery if you play games, talk, use the internet, play music, etc.
7. Urbanspoon – can’t decide where to go out to eat… give your iPhone a shake and see what comes up.
8. Flight (watch those hamsters fly!!) goofy game, but it’ll put a smile on your face.
9. 2 Across: NYT (and more) crossword puzzles downloaded on your iPhone!
10. Quickoffice (pay version, but worth it)… Word (document) and Excel (spreadsheet) files can be sync’d to your iPhone; create a document or spreadsheet on your iPhone; or at least read a file (e.g. an email attachment). Bit of a learning curve, but fairly easy to use.
Oh, and a bit of advice for iPhone users: use the Passcode Lock (go to Settings, then General). It may seem a bit of an inconvenience at first, but better than someone being able to access everything on your iPhone just by turning it on!
Can’t wait for a WSB iPhone app… for now I have it “bookmarked”.

inactiveMemberNew Wavos Rancheros, sub with black bean salsa. Yum town!
I go in weekdays every now and again and haven’t had too long to wait. Plus, the last time I was in there, some wonderful unknown stranger had already paid for my breakfast when I asked for my ticket. I didn’t recognize anyone there and have no idea who did it. It made my day. So now I REALLY have big love for Easy Street patrons too.
September 19, 2009 at 4:28 am #677546In reply to: Proletariat Pizza is open
CrystalizedGingerMemberJust got back, ate the “ham and egg” pizza at 8:30 and was sucking down mexican chocolate and salted caramel icecream at Full Tilt by 9!!:) Such fast and nice service on a very busy night.
Crust was my favorite kind- thin without being a cracker. The red sauce was homemade, I could tell by the shreds of fresh basil and the fact it didn’t taste sugary-from-a-can. I really just loved the food and the owners who came to talk to us and tell us about the handmade dough, sauce, and locally sourced ingredients.
The boyfriend wants me to tell you all that he loved the fact the bottom of the pizza pie was NOT oily, like Pizza Hut or Pagliacci.
My only drawback were the tall tall ceilings that may be wonderful for keeping the place cool with all the ovens, but gosh, the exuberant young and old alike had thier voices echoing so loudly I couln’t hear, but there is a lot to talk about here with all the yumminess?!
I will be back tomorrow (yes I will!) for the Hawaiian pizza with spam!

The Velvet BulldogParticipantThe BF and I walked over and checked it out last night. I was entranced by the cheeses! I hardly ever THINK about cheese and there I was, wanting to try all these crazy cheeses. I’m lame so I just left with some Gouda… The Gelato is fab–also left with some Bavarian Mint–danger yum! I think they should call out their Organic produce a bit better–it’s sort of hidden all smooshed in with everything else. The sushi chefs were very friendly and made me want to buy sushi–but I needed more veg, so I got the veg wrap, which was quite good. Seems like one of those stores I’ll go to from time to time for certain things, or in a pinch. Some of their prices are pretty ridiculous.
September 18, 2009 at 4:03 pm #677457In reply to: New QFC – reviews?
ellenaterMemberI’ve been twice, once on foot, once in the car. Opening day was just a look-see and visit to Starbucks. Great, prompt service and our steamers were perfect. I thought the store was very pretty but not too over the top like Whole Foods is. Still looks like a grocery. The big windows are beautiful and the sidewalk is really great.
The next visit was for actual shopping. Am I the only one who likes the garage music? I thought it was hilarious. Also the concrete still smells like a cake baking. Yum. Spaces are too tight. It’s about the same as the TJ garage in the University District, maybe a little tighter in the aisles. Elevator was wonky, took us down instead of up. Was not super slow, though.
Staff were friendly and helpful, including at the pharmacy. Layout was good and I am picky on that! The seafood area looked great and the sole we had was killer, as was the chard! The gelato case is VERY enticing but I haven’t partaken yet. The sushi case is very nice, also. I’m not a huge bakery person anymore so didn’t even look. Prices were average, IMO.
If you go soon, you can have an entire meal of samples throughout the store.
In general, I’m elated!
September 18, 2009 at 3:26 pm #677520In reply to: History of Houses
miwsParticipantHi GoGo, I don’t know if you came across this during your net search, but it may be a start:
Some of the info you need may not be directly accesible via the net. You might have to go to a physical location to research records. (And may have to make an appointment to do so.)
Here’s a direct link to the King County Parcel Viewer, where you can get the sales history on your property for around the last twenty years:
The City of Seattle’s DPD page may also be of help. Clicking on “Permit Status” under “Permit Tools” on the left side, can give you info for any work requiring a permit, that has been done (providing any previous owner(s) followed proper procedure). I believe this goes back around twenty years also:
The Side Sewer info on that site goes waaaayyyyy back, and is an interesting read.
Also, do you have any neighbors that have lived in the neighborhood for several decades? When I moved into a house in the mid-’80’s, the neighbors next door were in their mid-80’s, and had lived in their house for nearly fifty years at the time. The gentleman recalled quite a bit about my house, including what had been added on, and approximitely when. It was hard to imagine my dinky little house ever being any smaller! ;-)
Also, something I’ve done over the years, is to go to the main library downtown, and look through the old City Directories to see who lived at the particular address over the years. I’m not sure that our neighborhood libraries have such an extensive collection of City Directories. I seem to recall trying once at the Admiral Branch, and finding they didn’t, but that was many years ago.
Hope all, or at least some, of this helps!
Mike

saneyMemberi had PinkBerry for the first time yesterday at LAX. omg…soooo good. i went back for another one to take on the plane. they put a lid on it, put it in a bag and surrounded it with a couple of ice filled ziploks to make sure it made it onboard… they said they would expanding out into more states next year. yum. the original flavor was the best (passion fruit was also good)..

September 12, 2009 at 3:59 pm #677071In reply to: Pinkberry/RedMango/Frozen Yogurt nearby?
inactiveMemberFruity cereal pebbles? Can’t go there, personally, but Utopia does have some sauces, most importantly chocolate:)
It still has a nice tang, for certain, but somehow the Greek yogurt used makes the tanginess of others seem too dominant, unless you drench it in something else like one of the toppings. Utopia takes it up a notch, for my palate, to ultra-creaminess and an ever so subtle, yet more sedate tang which stand on its own really really well. Yum.
