ForestParticipantThe current Weekly (www.seattleweekly.com) has a piece naming the 5 best diners in Seattle. At number 3 is the Chelan Cafe under the West Seattle freeway.

sam-cParticipantjohnny blegs- fish n chips. I am quoting my husband. he’s the fish n chips connoisseur – that’s what he orders, everywhere. surely he tried them at Pacific inn after frequenting that place in grad school, but don’t know if he remembers them.
guess that’s why they call em opinions.

AlkiKmacParticipantJanS – care to share Beecher’s Mac ‘n Cheese recipe? Or do you know where it’s posted?
August 15, 2009 at 6:01 pm #674222
JanSParticipantAlkikmac…actually, it was on their website (but no longer, drats)..and it’s EASY :) Last time I made it, I used NO Woman as the major cheese, and Jack cheese, left out the chili spices..used penne pasta
here’s the recipe from another site…scroll down the page..

datamuseParticipantAhh, the Chelan. My favorite morning-after-with-hangover place for breakfast. :)
August 15, 2009 at 8:19 pm #674224
Myr-myrParticipantFresh Bistro! I keep bringing friends there and everyone raves. Creative and delicious cuisine. Lovely wines. Terrific staff. It’s my new favorite go-to place.

Serene1Memberjohnnyblegs – kudos – I have to agree, EBB is mediocre at best and difficult to believe people are willing to spend that much on bad burgers. Jak’s ok if you don’t really like steak. I am very sad to see AMA AMA go, it was nice to have a fresh oyster choice when the wait at Spring Hill was too long. But for fish and chips you all should drive a little farther south to 152nd in Burien and check out the authentic Irish fish and chips at Mick Kelly’s, the rest of the food is ok, but the fish and chips are great. (And while you are there check out Osteria da Primo a block or two west for some great Italian, friendly staff and a very nice wine list.) Otherwise, La Rustica and Spring Hill are the BEST in West Seattle, everything else is tolerable or has an occasional dish of particular note, but not outstanding overall.

TacomachineMemberJohnnyblegs- I agree. JAK’s burger is fantastic
West 5 is incredibly overrated. The mac and cheese is Kraft like. If you want that taste just buy the box. I think that is what West 5 might be doing anyway
I also haven’t tried Zippy’s but am looking forward to trying it.
I don’t frequent Buddha Ruska but what I’ve had has been really good.
Sorry, I have to disagree with Maharaja. I haven’t found any good Indian food in Seattle. It’s fine, I eat it when I want Indian, but I wouldn’t say it’s above average.

dawsonctParticipantI keep trying West 5, hoping the indifferent service from the bartenders and the just mediocre food was simply my bad luck, but it seems more like SOP with that place.
I know I am not a female, mid-twenties hotty, but I like to drink top-shelf brown liquor and I work in the restaurant industry, so I tip REAL well (STARTING at 20%), but if I walk into your bar, make eye contact with you, and sit in one of your bar-stools, don’t walk to the other end and start talking to one of your regulars while ignoring me for at least 5 minutes (my shortest wait EVER for service, and I never have gone during an extremely busy time).
Their stickers are cool, though.

DunnoParticipantSam-C,
Your husband favorite Fish and Chips in the greater Seattle Area are found where?
I did see EBB and Sunfish on your post. Love
Fish and Chips, my wife like the Totem House by the locks, I like Spud the best sometimes,
never tried the place in Freemont, but soon I will. For Pizza I like Cloverleaf in Tacoma.
Thanks
September 5, 2009 at 4:39 pm #674230
DunnoParticipantTwo days in a row had fish and chips with my wife.
EBB was a solid B, but both my wife and I agreed the better was Spuds A-, still looking for better. The service was good at EBB, a B+.
We really enjoyed a Matador happy hour last week and service A+ there. Next on list, Spring Hill!
BTW, also had a breakfast at Endoline Joes, my wife had a full breakfast, I had the breakfast burrito, only $5, and love it, A, service B-.

maplesyrupParticipantNever had the fish & chips at EBB but out of everything I’ve tried in Seattle, Sunfish is the best.

grrParticipantfunny how tastes differ!! We LOVE Royal India..Their lamb saag especially.
–
put us in the Three and Out for LaRustica. Massive much ado about nothing. Overpriced, over-salted, over rated.
Jaks…yeah..great steaks..wish there was competition tho.
Y’all…ya gotta try a burger at Rocksport. seriously.
Mashiko…without a doubt our favorite.
Spring Hill…yeah…it’s pretty good.
Fresh Bistro…great flavors on our first trip..WAY too small portions for the $$
West 5…nah.
Lee’s…Yup!
Budda R…duh. Crack chicken. say no more
The Thai Place next to Ama Ama is pretty damn good.
Too many good places in White Center to list. Pho 99 for one. And the taco truck.
–
WORST: Than Bros. Warm brown water. With salt.
September 29, 2009 at 4:34 pm #674233
hollyplaceParticipantCMP – I can’t believe it. I also found a huge hairball in my soup at Buddah Ruska. We use to go there all the time, and then a huge wad of hair – like from the bottom of the drain was wrapped around the chicken in my Tom Ka Gai soup. I haven’t been able to eat the soup anywhere since. Oh how love Thai food. I complained and they only offered me more soup and didn’t take it off our bill! Yuck! I am even more concerned that someone else found a wad of hair in their food too. Ewe!
September 29, 2009 at 4:39 pm #674234
hollyplaceParticipantOur fav’s
Mashiko – Ultraman
Kokora’s – Lamb dolmas
La Rustica – Sausage Gnocci
Pheonica – Anything Hussiend recommended. :(
September 29, 2009 at 5:29 pm #674235
mannamcParticipantWe have a 2.5 year old so we tend to do more takeout than going to sit down places these days, when we don’t feel like cooking.
Buddha R – crack chicken/tofu
Lee’s – Wonton soup, 7 flavor beef
Mashiko – awesome, but so so service lately
That Japanese place by Lee’s – really good every time I’ve had it, but I always forget about it.
Thai place that used to be Olarn – Lemongrass tofu
Thai place by Ama Ama – Palace chicken and Chef’s Special Noodles
Fish and chip place by the water taxi – delish
Mission – good mexican food without being a gut bomb
Bohemian – white wine sangria
September 29, 2009 at 6:56 pm #674236
TraciMemberI’m in LOVE with Mission. Like I lie awake at night dreaming of their margaritas and enchiladas. Very veg friendly and creative dishes. Plus the decor is perfect. Matador has its perks (4 dollar nachos, hello!) but my heart belongs to Mission.
Or any taco truck anywhere. The one in Renton by Harborview is my favorite, but that’s not WS!

Veteran WisdomMemberI would like to offer up one more spot that hasn’t been mentioned that I enjoy, Prost. It is a little hard to find seating but I enjoy the exuberant atmosphere and good German food/beer.

TarnishedMemberBest Bartender in West Seattle has got to be Al at the Puerta Vallarta Rest. To bad he only works days though.
October 8, 2009 at 6:51 pm #674239
LeroniusmonkfishMemberI liked Al but as you stated he only works days. I thought Lynda & Toni at the Yen Wor were really good.
October 8, 2009 at 7:18 pm #674240
JiggersMembermannamc…The Japanese place that you are thinking about is called Kamei. Kamei has decent food, but the value you get for your dollar is excellent.
October 9, 2009 at 3:34 am #674241
Junction JoeParticipantLove Matador, but getting really bummed out about their margaritas. Their margaritas are now 95% ice and 5% tasty beverage. And the waitresses try to take your glass away when you are 3/4 finished. As a result, you need to drink about 10 of their margaritas just to get a small buzz. :(

medoroMembergrr
very funny how tastes differ!!!!!
any restaurant in WS as something wrong, but White Center is the new capital of Gastronomy? Please refine your tastes!!!!!!
January 4, 2010 at 10:04 am #674243
JanSParticipantmedoro…White Center may not have Canlis, but there are some excellent places to eat there if you just look around and try something different. Wonderful Vietnamese food, pho, bahn mi, ice cream…you just can’t be a snob about it :)
