ken.. thanks for the tip about wasp traps… i looked at them a couple of weeks ago and passed. i will go back to get some and put them out immediately.

anyone composting… make sure compost bins are well covered if you live near raccoon habitat or you might be inviting more guests to your yard than you want. i learned that some years ago.. the hard way…

i use spam blocker in outlook… and it does work… it catches most of the spam.

but.. and here is the big problem.. you really have to sort through what it blocks for a very long time because i found too many important messages in there.

that said.. it took me less than an hour to sort through the 400+ messages that were put in my spam filter…. and another 2 hours to go through the remaining 400+ messages.. some of which were spam.

so.. it sved me half the time.

i use outlook because it is easy ken… i know it’s not the best… but on a bad brain day i can still use it:(

my hubby has had his email filtered through google gmail for some time now and loves it… so i am probably going to follow soon.

i am a very slow adopter:)

ok, back to dogs…

it isn’t just one pit bull that is nice lattemom… it’s most of them.

unfortunately, there are owners like the one that owned those two pit bulls…. who have been cited more than once by animal control and who do not license their pets that give the entire breed a bad name.

A thousand dollars isn’t enough… especially since he probably won’t pay it.

if there are criminal charges to file… i hope they file them… and i hope he never gets to have another dog.

if i was his neighbor, i would report him any time i saw a dog on his premises… whether that dog was visiting or not.

as for kids with baggy pants… it’s a few of them that give the rest a bad name.

my nephew is a mid-level officer in the navy (ok.. i am lousy with titles) and when he is home on leave he is in those baggy pants… and he is so white and upper middle class…. drives a fully restored 68 mustang… and he did most of the work himself.

and to dissenting opinions.. we might get a few more reasoned dissenting opinions if the thread didn’t degenerate into a brawl on a regular basis.

BTW.. the kennel people love my little cujos and they can come back any time… and i did get licked to death both before and after i walked them.

people always say they are lucky dogs that i rescued them… but i am the lucky one:)

I am researching yahoo now since I have never used it. From what I read it is designed to look a lot like outlook.

I can see you use yahoo mail via the web mail interface.

All spam filters have uneven response rates since the spammers continue to vary the methods of hiding their origin and the filter companies have to respond.

Let me look into it a bit more.

Unless it has changed from the info in the forums, it looks like forwarding the mail to a better spamfilter location results in a fee.

Ken – I did send you an email, so let me know if you never got it.

I have been doing what lattemom suggested and just putting all of the email addresses in my “blocked” section. However, I was under the impression that you shouldn’t open these mysterious emails, but since I have to open them to actually get the address, that is what I’m doing right now.

My husband uses the same email provider and he doesn’t get all these weird emails (I can’t count how many people want to send me millions of dollars).

Anyways, any help with this is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Kayleigh. You can’t change anybody, lattemom! Live and let live. Just don’t put yourself in situations where the only outcome will be a bad one!

You have definite opinions of certain people based on the way they look or dress. My advice? Just stay away from those type of people if you feel you can’t trust them.

The above is true only if you use an isp type interface for email. I have been rebuilding mail servers all week here. I pulled my servers from the Westin since they had not been rebuilt in 5 years.

If you can tell me what your using to retrieve email (outlook, webmail, google or hotmail) I might be able to tell you what to do.

Understand a few things though. Giving out your email is not required to get hammered with spam anymore.

Depending on how your mail is served, your email address can be hit with spam from a wide variety of methods that have nothing to do with you giving it out or publishing it.

I you send me an email I can read the headers and tell how your email is being sent.

Quick and dirty fix for a serious level of spam like mine, (400-600 per day) is forward the address to a gmail account and let google remove the spam.

How about Kenyon Hall? I know it is reservable for private parties. Not sure about the adult beverages question though. I know there are none there during the intermissions of regular performances… which is fine with me. There’s a small kitchen too; and plenty of street parking. Lou Magor is great with kids too. He teaches kindermusic there and may be available for a few extra dollars.

The West Seattle YMCA offers a great package, use the family room for the party and the kids gym for all the jumping and running around, totally supervised by a YMCA staff member.

If you haven’t ruled out Camp Long after your research, we’d give it an anecdotal thumbs-up. It was the site of the only big kid party we’ve ever had. Although the age of the crowd you’re dealing with might be a tiny bit too young to appreciate the option of naturalist-led walks during the party … Also, have you looked into any possibilities at The Hall @ Fauntleroy? We’ve been there a number of times now and they have smallish rooms as well as big.

I’m wondering if anyone who knows a lot about computers can give some advice (maybe Ken?).

I, evidently, gave my email address to someone or something and am constantly getting junk emails. I know that everyone gets a few now and then, but I get about 150 per day. Is it possible to fix this or would I have to vacate that email address and create a new one?

You can reserve a picnic shelter at Lincoln Park -just go to the Parks & Rec website for the info. It’s a small fee but you are guaranteed the spot. You can bring a moonbounce type of thing, too – I’ve seen lots of kid parties at the shelter near the south end playground. The only problem might be the “adult beverages” – I don’t think you’re allowed to bring alcohol into the parks, but maybe if you arrange for a special license it is OK? Something to check out.

“A Reader” is curious to know if any other parents have some birthday party ideas/locations in/around West Seattle which don’t cost a small fortune.

We’re beginning to plan our daughter’s 2nd birthday party in June and expect to have approximately 30 guests including adults and children infant through aged 7 years.

Our home is just too small to accomodate a crowd. I’ve researched Alki Beach and Camp Long…but am also looking for some other locations where we can bring in catered food/punch/adult beverages and cake/cupcakes for the kids.

Indoor or outdoor is fine. A moonbounce/clown might be okay as well. Just beginning to explore options and want to get my reservations in order now.

Believe me, I agree that lattemom lets things make her angry. A lot of things. She seems very quick to make assumptions. I could not live like that. That just seems to be her personality.

I agree that, more than anything, the real issue is irresponsible dog OWNERS, as apposed to the actual breed of dog. However, it is a fact that pit bulls make up a third of all vicious dog attacks. I find it naive when people say that their neighbor’s, cousin’s, friend’s.. etc.. pit bull is the nicest dog in the world and therefore all pit bulls are nice and everyone else who thinks they are vicious dogs is wrong just because they happen to know one friendly pit bull (run-on sentence, I think). That one friendly pit bull probably has responsible owners and was raised to be friendly and loving. That is not the case, as we all know, of all dogs (yes ALL dogs).

All the stuff about the kids in the restaurant, I’m just exhausted. I think pretty much anyone would have just left that situation. It’s sad that a family cannot enjoy a meal out because of some punk kids, but, hey, they are kids and they are just ignorant. Nothing you do will change their behavior. Eventually they will grow up. But that’s how the world works.

new resident… we have a basic difference of opinion concerning lattemom’s posts. you think she gets ganged up on while acknowledging that she might be bringing that upon herself…

i don’t think disagreeing with her is ganging up on her and if you read the threads where the “egging on” occurs, you will find in most cases she is doing most of the “egging on”.

as for name calling… most of the time lattemom initiates the name calling… and once initiated… indulges in round after round of nastiness to anyone who disagrees with her.

For some reason, i seem to be an exception… but it is clear even to me that she doesn’t actually read my posts.

i am the one who posted that pets are not a petting zoo.. that it is rude to ask anyone to pet their dog… and when you do so you are assuming responsibility for any unintended consequences.

As for disrespect… well, intolerance of any opinion other than your own is disrespectful.

Some people are only comfortable in a world of black and white… so anything different becomes inherently black and therefore evil and dangerous.

thus she responds to my post saying that teenagers wearing red.. even if they are in a gang are not inherently dangerous… with one countering that gang membership is a stupid and life limiting choice.

she is right. it is. but that still doesn’t make the existence of teenagers wearing red dangerous. they certainly could have become dangerous.. but what she described was merely frightening to her.

however in that paradigm anything which makes her uncomfortable frightens her and anything which frightens her is bad and anything bad is dangerous and therefore things which frighten her shouldn’t exist… and that they are allowed to exist makes her angry.

i probably shouldn’t exist because nice lady that i am, i swear occasionally in public and i own dogs that i know to be aggressive and i walk them in public places. And… i am truly a bleeding heart democrat… and proud of it.

as for pit bulls.. the original thread of this post… i don’t remember ever saying that pit bulls were not an “aggressive breed”. I said that pit bulls just happen to be getting a ton of attention lately.

If the two dogs in the last encounter had been standard poodles… chances are the outcome would have been different even though the actual circumstances might have been the same.

And certainly, the response would not have been to euthanize all standard poodles.

I happen to own dogs who are also an aggressive breed. In fact, the last 4 dogs i have owned have all been an aggressive breed. But that doesn’t make them bad dogs that ought to be eliminated.

None of them were as nasty and bad tempered and as inclined to bite anything in it’s path as my sister’s toy poodle.

Just because those dogs were pit bulls does not make all pit bulls bad. That kind of thinking only confuses the real issue… unsupervised dogs are the problem.

banning a breed won’t end the problem.. it will only shift it to another breed.

Enforcing animal control laws will end the problem.

But that means we will have to pay more taxes and no-one wants to do that… so they shift the problem to something that is easy to blame…

It’s so much easier than confronting the fact that many well meaning dog owners regularly ignore leash and containment laws with their pets and that some people regard back yard breeding as a right they wouldn’t want restricted.

If it’s the dog’s fault, we don’t have to confront the fact that any untrained and unsupervised animal is a threat to public safety.

enough.. i have things to do. i get to go pick up my two little aggressive monsters at the kennel i left them in for everyone’s safety while i was gone. A breed so genetically close to a wolf that aggressive would hardly begin to describe their breeding… and the biggest danger is that i will be showered with kisses and have to listen to their howls of disappointment that i would leave them. everyone should be so lucky.

Unfortunately, my method isn’t working very well since recently many posts have been reactions to that one person’s rants/posts. To read some of the responses to these posts makes me feel very uncomfortable, like how I feel when I see those poor people on the Jerry Springer Show. At least with Jerry Springer, you can change the channel quick and move on. When JoB, who I admire, wrote about shunning being wrong, I had to reconsider my tactic. After some reflection I’ve decided that I will simply refuse to feed the negativity, but not shun. I think there is a difference.
