Early, go early. I leave the Junction every day at 9:00 am. Today was the slowest I remember: 50 minutes to the CD! (17-20 on a smooth day) It’s a hit or miss prospect at 9. And never a problem coming home @3.

Granted I’m going south to Boeing Field, not north to downtown but I have to cross one of the bridges either way. My West Seattle co-worker and I have settled into opposite routines. Between 6 and 7am she takes the high bridge very quickly. I tend to leave my house between 8:15-8:30 and generally have an easy time going over the 1st Ave bridge going down Highland Park Hill. During the 7am hour the 1st AVE bridge can be slogged with departing garbage trucks depending on the day.

For the later option you will be impacted by I-5 spillover on BOTH bridges. If there are any accidents on I-5 NB around Boeing Field, the traffic gurus on TV will tell people to exit at SR599 and take the 1st AVE bridge into the city making it impossible to get on from Highland Park Way and it takes a long time to clear up (this morning for example) so I have to slink through South Park and go over the teeny tiny bridge on Boeing property down near the USPS sorting facility.

If there are accidents on NB I-5 or NB 99 between WS and Downtown the high bridge clogs up and sends everyone through Highland Park where you will crawl down the hill from High Point to the Bridge and it stays that way until close to 9am.

Bottom line, if you don’t want to get stuck by I-5/99 problems go early.

    What’s to b*tch about?? That’s faster than walking…by um, a little.

Full disclosure: I haven’t had to do the commute off the rock consistently for a year or more but I still have to do it occasionally, and have the following thought.

I SUSPECT that earlier is better. It seemed a little counter-intuitive to me but having tried both slots, I think I’ve had better luck with the earlier time. Although it MIGHT be the case that the later time is ON AVERAGE, a few minutes faster but for some reason is more likely to have the “big issue” that blows out the standard deviation?

I’m trying to say, not very clearly, that it feels like I run into weirdly long delays going later more than I suspect I would. Maybe I’m just unlucky?

I’ll be interested in seeing what others with a larger sample size say.

Hee-hee, Portland crossed my mind in a moment of panic, but the reality of it being a school night overcame that thought in a heartbeat! It’s one thing to let them stay out a bit past curfew on a reward, but that’s a heck-a-long way to go for this accomplishment.

Plus, I’m still trying to come up with the ultimate motivator for June, when those A’s really count! If I were to give them a road trip for a good quarter, they’d probably try to barter for Europe when they graduate next summer!

I know I can’t swing that. .. but Disneyland on the other hand, that might work. I just have to keep these little motivation rewards local.

I like doing this for them, especially because I feel so lucky; all through my teens, my mother would tell me that one day I would have to deal with a daughter of my own, and that payback can be hell.

Nothing could be farther from the truth with these two- and even the other one, two years below them.

I got lucky and dodged a “scud missile” because “payback” was due me in aces. Please believe me, I am not complaining, but I also sleep with one eye open at times, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Thanks for your kind compliment, Mike, and for letting an old Mama ramble. ;)

I would like to share the letter from the Thurgood Marshall PTA, so you can read their recommendation. Even I am part of this PTA, and there are some good points, I can’t agree 100 %.

    Hello Thurgood Marshall Families,

In the final draft of its Growth Boundaries proposal released last Friday, November 1, Seattle Public Schools has maintained its recommendation for optional APP elementary pathways in the Southeast (Wing Luke) and West Seattle (Fairmount Park), without a guarantee of additional resources to support these programs. As far as we know today, students in those neighborhoods could continue to attend Thurgood Marshall next year, but we have no further information.

North-end APP elementary is housed at Lincoln until 2017, and then they are moved to Wilson-Pacific.

To read the details behind the proposals, see the SPS Growth Boundaries page:

    http://www.seattleschools.org/modules/cms/pages.phtml?sessionid=06f896a2620f34f613b4e53dfa6a5558&pageid=294923&sessionid=06f896a2620f34f613b4e53dfa6a5558

If you have an opinion about this proposal, NOW is the time to share your thoughts with the District and School Board. The proposal will go to the School Board tomorrow evening, November 6, with a final vote on November 20.

For your convenience, we have provided the email addresses of the School Board Directors and key decision-makers in the School District. We have also included at the bottom of this email a copy of the letter sent by the Thurgood Marshall PTA to the District on October 25. Please feel free to use all or any portions of this letter in your email.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your opinion.

SAMPLE LETTER FROM THE THURGOOD MARSHALL PTA:

    October 25, 2013

Dear Superintendent Banda and School Board Directors,

We recognize that managing growth and capacity within Seattle Public Schools is the driving force behind the new Growth Boundaries initiative. However, we are greatly concerned that the rapid roll-out of proposals will compromise the quality, consistency and equity of APP services under the latest October 11th plan.

We, in the Thurgood Marshall Elementary PTA, believe that we have a strong, diverse, academically-challenging program supported by our outstanding administration and teaching staff. The school successfully serves APP, Special Ed, ELL, and General Ed/ALO students under one roof.

At this time, we do not understand the logic behind creating new pathways for our APP students since capacity is not an issue in the South End. We have worked hard over the last four years to create a strong and cohesive cohort at all grade levels, which would be dismantled under your new proposal. Creating two new APP pathways right now would diminish the strength of our program and require you to spread limited District resources across three different South-End locations . How can three small, fragmented, co-housed elementary sites be equitable to a large, stand-alone APP elementary school?

We surveyed our APP families to understand the relative importance of location and quality of APP services. The respondents included 44 West Seattle and 11 SE Seattle parents. While a portion of these families may want to have APP closer to home, they do not want to sacrifice quality for location. Our survey results indicate that our APP families value:

    • Strong administrative leadership and teaching staff

    • Rigorous curriculum to meet the needs of the APP learner

    • Cohort size large enough to support self-contained classrooms

    • Consistent delivery of APP across the District

We support the District’s intent to expand APP services to West Seattle and SE Seattle, but not at the detriment of all of the families being served at Thurgood Marshall, including those residing in West Seattle and SE Seattle. Until a program can draw sufficient resources and students of its own, it will only under serve the students it is trying to support.

Furthermore, our Special Ed, ELL, and General Ed/ALO families have expressed concerns about proposed changes, but we have not had the time to engage this group of diverse families to understand their perspective because the District is moving so quickly. Just as the District is still determining how to better deliver Special Ed services, we ask that you take the same care when planning the future of APP services. Please consider waiting until you have the results from your Advanced Learning Task Forces, which will recommend how best to deliver APP across the District, rather than rushing to fix a problem that is not broken. Engaging with our families from West Seattle and SE Seattle will also help you understand their specific needs as you look to expand these services in their neighborhoods.

Thank you for considering the opinions of the Thurgood Marshall PTA as you finalize the proposal.

<sold out show, no tix on craigslist, stubhub or ebay classified.>

I can’t believe this got by me, and I’m next to being disowned by my two teenagers if I don’t come through with their tix as promised.

No, they’re not brats, this one is on me; I made a promise to them that they could go if they had at least three A’s on the end their of 1st quarter report card (both of them WORKED it and have STRAIGHT A’s).

I blew it. I totally put off buying these tickets until it was too late!

Please help me save face, and find a way to get these bright, young uber-fans to the show!!!

I posted about a month ago, but I wanted to start a new thread with some more details that might help our search.

I am a member of the Boeing Employees’ Concert Band, we are a 501C3 non-profit all volunteer concert band comprised of Boeing Employees, Retirees and family formed in 1979 that play concerts around the community. We are also affiliated with the Orchestra of Flight and Boeing Stage Band. Our current rehearsal space at Zion Preparatory is slated for demolition in 2014 and we must vacate the building by the end of the year. (Less than two months away!) We are frantically searching for a new rehearsal and storage space as the initial lead we had with the new Aviation High School did not work out (as a STEM school they have no gym or music facilities and they aren’t even unpacked all the way). If we are unable to find anything our season will be cut short after the Holidays and the band may end for good.

Here are the basics of what we are looking for:

3 Weeknights of Availability for 2 hour rehearsals (Currently Mon/Tue/Thur 7-9pm but flexible)

    Practice Space: 25′ X 35′

Secure Storage: 15′ X 20′ (for percussion instruments and music library)

Rent: $3000/year (this is our current budget, less is better, we can possibly sustain a little more)

    Within Seattle City Limits

Possible options include: Elementary/Middle Schools (private or public), Parks & Rec Facilities, Churches, Community College, or any other large facility that rents space.

If anyone has any connections to a facility, school or church that may be able to get us in contact with someone in charge or general ideas around West Seattle or beyond please please drop me a message. julia (dot) hanke (at) hotmail

One of our board members does intend to reach out to Youngstown but we don’t have a specific contact.

We’re trying every avenue of contacts we have, so I’m hoping just maybe WSB can open up some additional possibilities for us to look into in order to continue our concert season.

For more information about the band and our current 2013-14 concert schedule: http://becb.org/

Costs to cover both my wife and me through work went up 250%. But the cost to cover just myself went down. So, I’m covering myself through work, and she’s covering herself through work.. and the total is still less than what I was paying previously by covering both of us.

“Because the way our government is set up Single Payer is not an option . . . yet. The Constitution has to be changed for that to ever happen.”

Absolutely untrue. Please explain where the Constitution addresses single payer health care.

As to all the other complaints about Obamacare…come back in six or eight months and let’s see how its going. I predict that by the end of the summer, when lots of people who were unable to get any kind of insurance will have some and the website is fixed and running smoothly (BTW, you can apply on the phone, by mail, or in person as well, not only at the website) the Repubs will start trying to take credit for it (probably pretending that their pressure forced Obama to get things right) and won’t be calling it Obamacare come election time.

I also predict that if the Dems manage to take the House and retain the Senate in 2014, there will be legislative fixes to the problems that have arisen (mostly due to cr*p put in the ACA to try and satisfy Repubs). There’s no possibility of that now, because Repubs only want to exploit any problems, have zero answers of their own, and are too lazy and ideologically driven to come to work and do anything positive for the American people

    HMCRich..

i hate to burst your bubble…

but the elderly, the infirm, the poor, our legislators and our military already enjoy single payer medical services.. and they run very well…

they are, in fact, the most efficient and cost effective delivery of quality health care in our nation…

only Kaiser comes close.. an insurance that runs just like single payer..

    imagine that!

Our constitution does not have to change to create single payer in these United States.

the foot in the door is Republican.

As by the way may be the boot that kicks it open.

they got exactly what they wanted in the way of health care reform and refused to endorse it.

the only states where it is not working are those where the governors of the state refused to implement a state program.

if they mange to f… it up enough the public clamor for single payer just might be their undoing.

    i could only hope.

Skeeter. Because the way our government is set up Single Payer is not an option . . . yet. The Constitution has to be changed for that to ever happen. Progressive movements are trying. Even with more and more Democrats in DC clambering to slow down the rollout due to the website debacle, the President and HHS will not because the foot is in the door.

The question is this. If they can’t even launch the websites properly, how are they going to run this program efficiently. They won’t. Not for a long time. Even the security for the website isn’t what it should be…. http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/11/05/cbs-news-white-house-granted-itself-waiver-to-launch-obamacare-website-deemed-as-high-security-risk/

The litany of lies and misdirection that this administration and its cronies have given us is reprehensible. Affordable, huh? What? http://moneymorning.com/ob-article/obamacare-taxes.php?code=dis-oc-taxes

Millions of people are losing the doctor or premiums they wanted to keep. For three or four years the President stated numerous times that people could keep their healthcare. He LIED.

The laws are forcing people of faith to accept policies that go against their beliefs. Pro Life Democrats were told that abortions and birth control would not be mandated but they were lied to.

George Stephanopoulos questioned the President that it was a tax. Obama denied that strenuously but the Supreme Court called it a tax!!

I have a dream that one day Democrats will take responsibility for their debacles.

You can’t blame the insurance companies and big business if you support Obamacare. Health Insurance and Medical businesses are big business too. You can’t have it both ways.

There were about 30 million people who needed help. Instead of focusing on them, the progressives have screwed everyone. Plus these changes are already hurting people. Real people. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304527504579171710423780446?tesla=y

There MUST be a personality test based upon Leaf Litter Tolerances, don’t you think? I find the differnces kind of fascinating. While walking through the neighborhood yesterday, I saw a woman raking some beautiful bright red Euonymous leaves off the parking strip and I thought, “Aw man, those red leaves are so pretty against the green grass–I’d leave them there for a bit.” I also get happy when leaves start falling on the garden beds ‘cuz that means instant cold-weather protection and I don’t have to mulch! The BF on the other hand, just about has head explosions every time he walks from the car to the front door.

I do try to help keep the drains clear though, and the area that DOES drive me bonkers is the Henderson street approach to the Westwood Village Walkway. Those Ash trees drop their leaves and NO ONE cleans them. They get mushy and slippery and dangerous. Might try to talk some neighbors into helping me clean them up this year.

I have also known an individual who would shop-vac leaves out of his yard.

I don’t think they’re worth it in the SCL service area. When you’re talking hours long outages and you don’t have a specific medical need the hassle is probably not worth it. Food in the freezer stays safe for 24-hours. Now where my mom lives in rural Thurston County in PSE territory where they can’t keep up with all the repairs her outages are measured in multiple DAYS. She can’t store long term food in the freezer because every single year there is a days long event that spoils all of the food without a generator. And outages are probably every few months. In Seattle, it’s maybe a 5+ year event. And just more junk to store in the garage and fuel up. And if outages are far and wide enough when you run out if gas you can’t pump more at a gas station with power out.

    It can seem endless sometimes.

I remember back in the Fall of 1987, I had been managing the IBM Building parking garage for about five months.

The longtime night attendant talked about how bad the leaves would be on our steep, exposed ramp/driveway, which ran probably about 30 feet or so, from where it exited underneath the building, on up to the public sidewalk and street.

He mentioned how bad the leaves got; not only on the exposed ramp, which could be a slip/fall hazard, especially when wet (even though visitors weren’t supposed to use it as pedestrian access) and how many of the leaves ended up blowing down inside the garage.

I was all smug, telling him it couldn’t be all that bad, as the first garage I’d worked at, was above ground, with our work area at street level with at least some degree of exposure on three sides. I figured nothing could be as bad as what we dealt with my three plus years at the first location.

    Boy, was I wrong!!

What I failed to take into account, was there were at least two trees that partially hung directly over that exposed ramp at IBM. And yeah, it seemed like the leaves were endless. I could swear the damn things must be regenerating leaves!

Obviously, I would have never harmed the trees, but I did wonder if injecting them with Super Glue might make the leaves stay on them! ;-)

    Mike
