WordsWest Literary Series Presents
“Home Unsettled Home”
with Rachel Kessler and Matthew Zapruder
Favorite Poem by Mud Bay
7:00 pm, Wed., May 16, 2018, C & P Coffee Co., 5612 California Ave. SW

Writers Rachel Kessler and Matthew Zapruder will investigate ideas of home, the changing landscape and heart-scape of where we’re from and where we live now. Both authors work in multiple genres, and the evening will include a guided writing exercise for every experience level.

Rachel Kessler’s essays, poems, cartoons, videos, and visual art have appeared in The Open Daybook, Ghosts of Seattle Past, and WA129, as well as The Stranger, Narrative Magazine, Literary Hub, Poetry Northwest, and public restrooms throughout Washington state. Kessler is cofounder of poetry performance collaborations Typing Explosion and Vis-à-Vis Society. She is currently working on a community cartography project called “Profanity Hill: A Tour of Yesler Way.”

Matthew Zapruder is the author most recently of Sun Bear, Copper Canyon, 2014, and Why Poetry, a book of prose about poetry, Ecco/Harper Collins, 2017. An Associate Professor in the MFA at Saint Mary’s College of California, he is also Editor at Large at Wave Books, and from 2016-2017 held the annually rotating position of Editor of the Poetry Column for The New York Times Magazine. He lives in Oakland, CA.

The Favorite Poem Project, a vital part of WordsWest’s monthly literary events, invites a community member to share a favorite poem and information about his or her organization. On May 16th, we welcome a favorite poem from Eva Duleba at Mud Bay.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw, and this season’s intern/co-curator is Joannie Stangeland. Grant funding from Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and Poets & Writers, Inc. allows WordsWest to pay featured writers for their time and talent.
