USCG tall ship and Heritage Fleet to sail into the bay today

You just might see this from West Seattle shores as the vessels head toward Pier 66 this afternoon: The Coast Guard Academy “tall ship” Eagle (photo above) — billed as “the only square-rigger in U.S. government service” — making a one-day Seattle stop on its way to Tall Ships Tacoma (no public tours here, alas), accompanied by a three-boat Coast Guard Heritage Fleet. This USCG media advisory has details on the ships and says Eagle will arrive around 3:30 pm. (You can also read more about this Heritage Fleet here.) 3:45 PM UPDATE: We are at Duwamish Head and not seeing the ships yet. Two USCG choppers are flying together toward Magnolia Bluff, though, so maybe it’s soon.

grrrr to tall ships tacoma. Why did they have to have this festival the same weekend as the CWB’s wooden boat festival? Granted- many truly “tall” ships wouldn’t fit under the Aurora Bridge, but i’m sure the Adventuress, Lady Washington, and Zodiac have been lured down south — just to name a few.

Ok. Griping done.

I suppose it’s a pain to get through the locks.

Not at this point – I linked everything I possibly had. But later if things calm down a little bit I’ll see if Coast Guard media relations can tell anything.

I want to see it! I might just have to see picutes though. If they were to park on the CG base I would deffentaly go.

HavenÂ´t had a chance to see the Eagle under full sail but fortunately I’ve seen the other three of four ships built by the German Navy; Portugal’s Sagres, the Gorch Fock (now the Tovarishch of Ukraine) and Romanian Navy’s Mircea. Absolutely beautiful. Regards!
