TRAFFIC ALERT: Stuck truck in Upper Alki

Thanks to David for sending the photo and tip. He says that truck’s been stuck since about 4:30 pm at 52nd SW and SW Hughes, which he describes as a “switchback turn.” (Here’s a map.) Radio exchanges indicate police have just gotten to it a short time ago.

Oh, boy.  That might be there a while.  GPS gives the worst advice to truck drivers.

GPS AI for sure — I used to live just up the hill from that curve — you can have a hard enough time with just a long pickup — especially fun with a stick shift – any vehicle!

Sent this to my sisters: Also fun if you met someone when driving – going up or down!  Remember this curve – especially fun on a sled! Except just as you got around the corner you hit slush – since the next slope was southwest facing and the afternoon sun was melting the snow!

Yes, this. We go up that hill sometimes as my husband uses it while cycling – but in a minivan it is difficult to navigate, impossible if you meet a car along the way, as there is no shoulder to pull onto. I cannot imagine a truck trying to go down, poor person.

Drivers can always, you know, use their judgment and not go that way once they see it’s a difficult turn. God forbid we take accountability for our own decisions.

I really hope they can straighten this out and get him headed back up Bonair safely. Poor guy.

Oh no! I know that stretch very well, walking and driving. Besides the hairpin turn and big truck, it gets very slippery in the fall with wet leaves. Poor guy.

Oh man! There are so many opportunities down that road to realize you are going down a rabbit hole. And that hairpin turn is just the obvious trap of no return. Even reading a map would show these roads are tiny hillside roads and that turn is indeed well mapped. Sorry guy.

Why “sorry”? You can literally SEE the turn from this picture. “I can risk going left getting stuck, or go right and find a place to turn around. Maybe lose 10-15 minutes. Welp, left it is!”

Only in America do we think it’s OK to send giant trucks and semis into narrow street neighborhoods.  Travel in Europe and you will see that large trucks mainly stick to the major highways.  I guess it helps having narrow roads 500+ years old.  People eventually learn.  I used to take this turn on and off of Bonair in our old 1967 VW bus (with a stick shift), and it felt like it was going to tip over.

Who is “we”?!? That decision was on the driver. Why is everyone BUT the driver getting blamed for him getting stuck?

You could have saved yourself and the rest of us some time by just posting “I’ve never driven a truck like this in an area like this and I don’t know what I’m talking about” just the once, instead of finding three different ways to say it in the same comment section.

This little thing called society, maybe you should consider joining it and paying attention.
