BIZNOTE FOLLOWUP: Wondering when Panda Express is opening in Westwood Village? Finally an official estimate

That’s a Panda Express-provided image of what the chain calls its “Panda Home” interior concept, and that’s what they say you’ll find when their Westwood Village location opens. The image was part of a reply we received from a company spokesperson today, after our latest inquiry about their opening timeline. It’s going on two years since we first reported Panda Express was going into the former Pet Pros space, and that in turn was 10 years after a different Westwood Village proposal that was ultimately scrapped. The company spokesperson tells us today, regarding when they’ll open, “We’re currently looking at the first week of August (pending any construction delays of course). Once open, this location will employ nearly 40 people and boast the latest Panda Home design. Inside, customers will find a distinctly American Chinese design that bridges the East and the West with red lanterns, a moon gate portal and vibrant Chinatown signs.” The spokesperson notes that this is one of three stores they’re opening in Western Washington in the next few months; the other two are in Silverdale and Lake Stevens. The nearest one to West Seattle is in Burien.

I am still unreasonably excited for this. My glorious beloved Panda, here to clog my arteries and compromise my ethics in just a few weeks. Can’t wait! 😆

Smart money says the Silverdale and Lake Stevens locations open well before this one does.

The Wendy’s in White Center might open before this.  They are moving at a much faster pace.

They provide jobs. Maybe jobs for those in transitions but they are still jobs. Nothing wrong with work of any kind.

Take look at pay scale, not perfect but a great opportunity

God bless. Westwood village is getting the goods we all deserve.

Anyone else worried for Toshi’s? This will surely hit them hard.

    • K July 9, 2025 (4:43 am)

No, it is two different cuisines.  Five Guys didn’t run McDonald’s out, and they have much more similar menu items.  Toshi’s doesn’t sell Orange Chicken and no one goes to Panda Express when they’re craving teriyaki.

Not sure how this would affect Toshi’s. They serve real food, not prepackaged fast food. Different crowds.

      • Roy July 9, 2025 (11:23 am)

This will absolutely impact Toshi’s, especially in this economy.

        • K July 9, 2025 (1:26 pm)

How?  Not all Asian food is the same.  If someone is craving Orange Chicken, they weren’t going to Toshi’s to begin with.

Panda Express isn’t pre-packaged food. They cut up fresh vegetables, beef, chicken, and shrimp and cook it in woks right in front of you. Their only pre-packaged items are fortune cookies and their cooking and serving sauces. It’s nice to have a healthier food option at WWV now that Vatsana’s Thai is long gone.

The only restaurant I EVER remember at Westwood Village that would qualify as a healthy option was Eats Market Cafe.  Panda Express is not any healthier than Toshi’s.

I miss Eats Market so much. Their breakfast plates were so good.

Big news for people who hate flavor.

THANK YOU for being the needed voice of pessimism. I ate at a Panda Express once, about 20 years ago, and I’ve regretted it ever since. It’s the Starbucks of Asian cuisine.

You’d think with the amount of sodium they pack into their food, it would at least taste like something other than impending heart disease.

Anything opening in Westwood is a good thing.

Toshis lost me when they started the credit card surcharge.  Same with the Thai restaurant that is now Happy Lemon, although admittedly their quality slipped as fast as their prices went up (faster than others) such that they went from a great deal to reasonable pricing to too expensive relative to others.  Fair warning for Toshis if Panda Express doesn’t add a credit card fee.

I give it one year at the most. I’m surprised Five Guys are still hanging on.

    • Westwood July 9, 2025 (10:28 pm)

I’ll take that bet every day.
