UPDATE: 2+-hour CenturyLink outage in West Seattle and beyond; company blames ‘network routing issue’

3:50 PM: When we hear from readers about cable/internet outages, it’s usually very localized … but this one seems to be an exception. About half an hour ago, our CenturyLink service suddenly went out in Upper Fauntleroy. We had someone working outside so we thought maybe they’d pulled a cable. Then we started hearing from readers – mostly in Gatewood, but most recently a text from someone at California/Dakota. Anyone else? We are going to try reaching the CL media team but the holiday might make that a challenge.

4:01 PM: Posts on X (ex-Twitter) suggest this goes beyond Seattle. The official @CenturyLink account has someone replying to reports, only saying they’re looking into a “possible disruption.” But the CL website itself is down too (we got a 503 error, as did someone in a comment below). In addition to comments, we’re getting texts from all around West Seattle. Some mention Quantum is down too.

4:20 PM: On X, CL has yet to make a statement acknowledging the far-and-wide outage, and its website continues to serve an error message. … Commenters are trying a workaround that’s been circulating on social media; we have no way to verify (we’re using Comcast/Xfinity right now, lots of redundancy for business purposes).

5:17 PM: Some commenters mentioned their service just returned; ours appears to, as well, after a little more than two hours out. Still no official comment from CenturyLink/Lumen, however.

5:42 PM: And we’ve received the company statement:

We are currently addressing a network routing issue that caused a temporary service disruption for some customers. Our teams have identified the root cause and are actively working to restore full service as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we resolve this matter.

6 PM: Company spokesperson Matt Villarreal just sent an updated statement saying everyone should be back on: “… All services have since been fully restored. We understand how important it is to stay connected and sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding during this time.”

  • Rick Marshall June 19, 2025 (3:57 pm)

It’s also out on Phinney Ridge, went down about 45 minutes ago. More impressively, during this time the CenturyLink website itself has been down, so something catastrophic seems to have happened.

  • MG June 19, 2025 (3:58 pm)

it seems Quantum Fiber is out in north admiral area too

  • Scarlett June 19, 2025 (3:58 pm)

Much of the block at 40th sw and SW Findlay are out. Multiple neighbors century link and version reported. Also, CenturyLinkā€˜s website at least part is out and their phone line is busy.

Out in Belvidere. I’ll stop restarting my router! Oddly, I have no cellular data, either, through Consumer Cellular. Partner’s AT&T cell data is connecting though.

  • Michael June 19, 2025 (4:00 pm)

Out across Rio Rancho, New Mexico (suburban Albuquerque). I posted to Nextdoor and got answers from all across town. This is way more than someone forgot to call Miss Utility before digging. Even the CL website is down (see screenshot).

    • Aria June 19, 2025 (4:38 pm)

Hey there,      I’m out in Rio too. I changed the DNS server number to 8.8.8.8 like another commenter here advised and it worked. I’m connected. Try it out and spread the word to our fellow Rio Ranchoans. šŸ™‚šŸ‘

It’s out in my area 46th between Alaska and Oregon

  • withoutwireless June 19, 2025 (4:03 pm)

Have CL ethernet but wireless not working here near Fairmount Park. Neighbors reported via Seattle City Light, that there’s a down power line on Fauntleroy between Dawson and Brandon, with fallen tree leaning into it. Probably not related hearing it might be nationwide!

  • Liz June 19, 2025 (4:04 pm)

According to the CenturyLink subreddit, it’s down across the US.

  • Joan June 19, 2025 (4:04 pm)

Out at 34th and Brandon. Can’t get any web or phone customer service.

  • JustSarah June 19, 2025 (4:05 pm)

Just fine in north Fauntleroy near Thistle steps. Only sharing since we’re so close to the other outage areas.

  • Phillip Mayfield June 19, 2025 (4:05 pm)

There’s a thread on Reddit that shows many people have lost service, spread out in all areas that CenturyLink services.   I’m among the affected.   It’s appears to be the DNS servers have gone down, as some people are having luck with switching to other DNS servers or people that were connected to a VPN before everything died.

    • WS Res June 19, 2025 (4:30 pm)

Here’s a link to the Reddit thread with information on how to make this change – you have to be connected to your router, not bridging off your phone, so you can go in and change the DNS settings for the router itself. I switched my secondary DNS server to one of the CloudFlare addresses and things are working normally again.   https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/1lfnqjs/quantum_fiber_outage/

  • Anonymous June 19, 2025 (4:06 pm)

Seems to be working if you set one of the Google DNS servers on your computer: 8.8.8.8 is working great. Possibly also the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 DNS server would work as well. (You can google how to change the DNS server setting on your OS, it’s pretty straightforward on a Mac!)

    • bolo June 19, 2025 (4:26 pm)

Thanks for that! My internet connectivity is back up after changing Dynamic DNS to Static, and listing 1.1.1.1 as primary DNS and 8.8.8.8 as secondary.

Any drawbacks to using the Google DNS server?

    • SueD June 19, 2025 (4:32 pm)

This fix works like a charm

Well, I cannot connect to CenturyLink support webpage, but that may be an issue on their end.

  • Dave Gershgorn June 19, 2025 (4:28 pm)

Out in Arbor Heights, too! I was able to get my internet working again by setting a manual DNS server in my iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings, using 8.8.8.8 (a public Google-operated DNS, it’s like a phonebook for the internet). I did this on my iPhone and Mac, and I’m back online. Hope this helps if anyone is trying to get back online! Though remember to delete the manual DNS server once this outage is out, so it defaults back to whichever CenturyLink automatically uses.

  • parklover June 19, 2025 (4:29 pm)

Tried that DNS server trick mentioned above– didn’t work . Am on a Mac.,

Out nation wide. It’s a DNS server issue. If you change the secondary DNS address in your modem to google’s 8.8.8.8 Then you will get internet back.

    • Brian June 19, 2025 (5:12 pm)

And how would I go about doing that?

  • Dave June 19, 2025 (4:51 pm)

    Southern oregon is out

  • Janoy June 19, 2025 (4:51 pm)

For those that are technically inclined, this outage appears to be DNS related. So it appears to fix internet connection is you set Google’s DNS IPV4 address as the static DNS option in your modem. Use IPs 8.8.8.8 as primary and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary.

  • John Gaines June 19, 2025 (4:53 pm)

  • WSB June 19, 2025 (5:20 pm)

Ours is back in Upper Fauntleroy too. Still no official statement from the company, though; our email to the media team has gone unacknowledged, and the people replying on X were continuing, two hours in, to acknowledge only a “possible disruption.” – TR

  • MrsL June 19, 2025 (5:25 pm)

Ours went down around 3:30. We left to go shopping and we came back around 5:20 to find the interwebs working again. What was weird was that our Alexa and FireTV worked during this outage but the cell phones, iPad and PC didn’t have any Internet.

  • JTinWS June 19, 2025 (5:28 pm)

Still out in Belvidere, just north of the Charlestown water tower. :-/

  • HS June 19, 2025 (5:32 pm)

Sat outside and watched the clouds. Kinda nice.

  • Jhaggard1 June 19, 2025 (5:37 pm)

This is a DNS issue. Try VPN or set your DNS to 1.1.1.1 (cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). I posted this on Twitter. Heads up #quantumfiber in WA. If your internet down, it may be a DNS issue, not full outage. VPN connections may still work.To fix manually set DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.On iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > tap ā“˜ > Configure DNS > Manual > Add 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 > Save.

  • WSB June 19, 2025 (5:45 pm)

Company statement received and added above.

  • Lesley June 19, 2025 (5:48 pm)

Quantum Fiber is back up and running in Highland Park. It was weird though because the TVs and tablets were fine the whole time but the computer, phones and Xbox were down.

  • Eric1 June 19, 2025 (5:55 pm)

Still out. Century Link service is awful.  The unfortunate reality is that it is the best service available.   If you ever wonder why service is $&!# and prices are high, just ask your city government on why fiber or cable competition is not allowed in the city.

  • Marie June 19, 2025 (5:56 pm)

from mason county …. out on Heartstine island, was also out at 330pm, and did not come back until 502pm .  The web site, and App. was down. So you were not able to report that there was a problem. I am a customer of centurylink for 30 yrs.   I have only had it go down maybe 5 times in that time frame.  As I am a rural residence there are very few providers to choose from.

  • Deb June 19, 2025 (6:03 pm)

Columbia Mo as well since 4:30 or 5:00

  • Marilyn June 19, 2025 (6:41 pm)

Mine is still not starting up. The modem light is flashing or red or blue, occasionally green but flashes. Any fixes to re-boot it? I’m in the Alaska Junction area.

    • Erin June 19, 2025 (7:14 pm)

I’m in the junction and mine is also still not working :(

    • Maddy June 19, 2025 (7:16 pm)

Mine is doing the same thing, in arbor heights.

    • parklover June 19, 2025 (7:26 pm)

I assume you have tried the ol’ reset button and also turning everything off and on?

    • WS Res June 19, 2025 (7:53 pm)

Unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in. If that doesn’t sort your router, then do the same to your cable modem.

      • Maddy June 20, 2025 (10:23 am)

Yes restarted multiple times, still not working this morning. Anyone else’s century link not working in arbor heights still?

  • BlairJ June 19, 2025 (7:07 pm)

This was just a snippet of what it would be like if the sun were to unleash toward the Earth a coronal mass ejection powerful enough to take out the power and communications grid.

  • AR June 19, 2025 (7:10 pm)

Why was this not mentioned in The Seattle Times online? *BIG KUDOS* goes out to Tracy and The West Seattle Blog for helping to keep my sanity. I thought it was only happening to me, and nothing I did to fix the problem worked.

  • Maddy June 19, 2025 (7:15 pm)

Is anyone’s WiFi still out in arbor heights? Or maybe I’ve plugged it all back in wrong or something.

  • Lucy June 19, 2025 (7:51 pm)

    Starlink ftw!

  • Russ C June 19, 2025 (9:47 pm)

Wifi is really spotting – in and out – anyone else having that issue still?  It doesn’t seem to have been completely fixed

  • Brian W June 19, 2025 (10:05 pm)

Still out for me in the Alaska Junction. I have been waiting with their chat bot for support for 2+ hours. I tried the DNS change to the google and cloudflare numbers provided but that didn’t work for me. Super annoying!

    • Brian W June 20, 2025 (7:51 am)

My internet is still out in the Alaska Junction (40th and Oregon). I sat on their support chat for 4 hours last night and got to 53 in the queue before I started dozing off at my desk. Back on the support chat this morning for an hour and at 99+ in the queue.

      • Eric1 June 20, 2025 (9:57 am)

lol. Not laughing at you but with you.  Stayed at 99+ for an hour and my phone went to sleep and it said disconnected and would I like to re-enter the queue.  I assumed I went back to the end of the line but it was still 99+.  Couldn’t pay attention that closely so that happened a couple more times before I gave up.  Decided that maybe I should change my internet service provider instead of putting up with poor customer support.  I have had multiple problems this year with Century Link fiber service and the only thing consistent is the poor customer service experience. I will say that the technicians are great, but spread very thin.  One week out is the standard service time for me.  Plus I always have to listen to the upsell BS before they even schedule an appointment.

  • Sarah Shrader June 20, 2025 (12:51 am)

    Ours is still out.

  • Marilyn June 20, 2025 (7:22 am)

Ours is still out this morning.

  • Marilyn June 20, 2025 (7:37 am)

    Ours too

  • Shelby Clary June 20, 2025 (8:34 am)

Mine is still out. 2+ hour wait on the phone so I hung up. Anybody still dealing with this?

  • Out in admiral June 20, 2025 (9:14 am)

I’m still out in Admiral as are several of my neighbors. I’ve been in the service queue all morning and finally have someone helping me. I called in and opted to be helped via text and had about an hour wait. The person I’m talking to says their text queue is shorter than the phone queue, for what it’s worth.

  • WMT June 20, 2025 (9:33 am)

Last night I waited on hold for 4 hours and 56 minutes before speaking to a Centurylink rep and it took them over 12 hours to get to my text chat. The phone rep couldn’t get my internet working and scheduled an appointment with a technician. The earliest they had available was Tuesday. The rep advised calling during normal business hours to ask if I could get an earlier appointment so now I’ve been on hold for over an hour and a half. I also used the chat this morning but that rep only tried to upsell me on other services, which was not appreciated at all.

  • Marilyn June 20, 2025 (1:06 pm)

We are still out here in Alaska Junction.

  • Joe June 20, 2025 (3:19 pm)

We are in Whitecenter and have had no phones since May 20th. Every time I call to inquire with Century Link they pretend like its the 1st time I am calling in and are bothered that I am  asking why our lines are still down.  They will not give me a eta either on getting the service back up.

No CenturyLink landline dial tone for over two months now.  Open repair ticket and get daily text page that technician will be here in next day or so but never shows up, and they keep billing us.

They did this to me for 7 months straight. Took money out of my bank account for no phone or internet service every month. They texted me almost every day saying a technician was on the way – no technician ever showed up. I filed a complaint with the Washington Attorney General, they lied to the Attorney General and said I wasn’t a customer. Then 2 more months later they finally let me cancel the service and gave me back about half of the money they had stolen. 6 more months later I got a call from a technician saying he was on his way…. I am in Seattle.

Still no internet service in N Junction / S Admiral area. Had a really slow connection (2k ping avg) last night and earlier today, but now nothing. Been this way for hours.

Scott, it slowed down briefly last night but came back when we cycled our connection off and on. Did you try the DNS fix posted above?
