READER REPORTS: Seniors preyed on by seemingly friendly thieves

We’ve received two reader reports about similar incidents. First one was sent today by Nancy:

Last Thursday a senior friend of mine and her husband were walking up Alaska from Avalon to Whole Foods at 10:30 am.

At 37th and Alaska a passing van asked for directions and then started a conversation meant to engage them on a personal level including a hug from the car window during which they then cut or somehow removed a gold chain and gold bracelet from the senior gentleman.

A police report was filed. Redmond Police posted an alert about this last year. Essentially people in rental SUV’s are approaching older individuals and asking for directions and/or offering to sell or trade jewelry, and robbing the individual after contact is made.

The other one was reported in mid-May in White Center – Jennifer said her parents, 73-year-old mom and 81-year-old dad, were approached while getting into their car outside McLendon Hardware:

… Male/female offered gifts, jewelry and were making physical contact (holding dad’s hand & kissing it) but I believe they were trying to distract both of my parents in an attempt to rob them. The female was standing outside of the driver’s side window where my dad was and the male was standing outside my mom’s window telling her to roll it down. Each person intentionally dropped a piece of jewelry inside of the car in hopes mom/dad would retrieve it and open their doors to hand it back, but luckily mom sensed that something was wrong. She started shouting that she was going to call 911 and the male/female then left in a hurry. … Male and female were driving a small Chevy sedan similar to (this picture).

We asked for descriptions:

Male:
About 5’ 10” tall
Slim build
Short black wavy hair
Dark brown complexion
Was wearing a cream short sleeve floral shirt.

Female
About 5’ 5”
Slender figure
Couldn’t make out hair color because it was wrapped up in a bandana/scarf
Light brown complexion
Wearing a long skirt

We don’t have police-report numbers in either case (the first would be SPD, the second would be KCSO), but the primary goal of both readers was to suggest warning vulnerable relatives/friends.

There was a post of something similar on NextDoor at the Asian market in White Center.  They put another necklace on the woman and took the one she was wearing.

The criminals are part of the Romanian Gypsy (Romani) organized crime rings that operate all throughout the US. They use as little violence as possible so they don’t become a priority for the police, and then they move to another area/ state. From time to time they get caught. Do a search on the internet and educate yourself on other scams / crimes they perform.

      Completely racist. And unfounded.

      • Johnny Stulic May 28, 2025 (3:59 pm)

Hysterical responses like this is precisely why nothing gets done to reduce crime. These types of scams are well documented and easily verifiable on the Internet, from police and other crime stat sources, not just YouTube. The perps description fits the profile. And yet, it’s always either racism, or criminalizing poverty, or innocent minors, or whatever else warrants the endless crocodile tears supply. If it turns out the perps are Romani, should we let them go lest we’re being racist?

Organized crime rings have their own modus operandi. This type of theft is perpetrated by Romani organized crime rings ;Here are some recent example: https://ktla.com/news/local-news/irvine-pd-warns-of-romanians-and-jewelry-stealing-scheme/ ; https://www.redmond.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2165

This is a report about Romanians. Not Romani people. They are not the same thing.

        • Lauren May 29, 2025 (12:33 pm)

Both news articles linked here are about ROMANIAN organized crime. Good grief, people.

Hey Derek you should get out more. There has been way too many stories about the Romanian mafia stealing from shops for a long  time. They hit my friends Children’s boutique in Sumner two years ago and they continue to do damage to business owners. They also bring their children to help wipe out merchandise as fast as they can. Quit coddling criminals, it’s not a good look. No matter what their race is.

        • Derek May 28, 2025 (8:31 pm)

I’m out way more than you. Guaranteed. I’ve had my windows smashed countless times, my house robbed, my car stolen. And I still fault the system and social inequality. I’m not coddling anyone. I also know Romani people are so tired of this harmful stereotype. I guess you think all Italians are in the mob. All Jews control the media? I don’t care what you think is a “good look” frankly because your posts are sub par. Your use of “they” is despicably racist too. Grow up.

      • T Rex May 28, 2025 (8:29 pm)

Racism has nothing to do with it, what is wrong with you? Bad folks are bad folks.
        Stop stirring this endless pot.

        • Lauren May 29, 2025 (12:38 pm)

Even if we’re ignoring the ethnic slur and conflating Romanian and Romani….  Blaming an entire group of people when there is ZERO factual evidence is racist, yes.

          • Alki resident May 29, 2025 (5:37 pm)

Lauren, zero factual evidence? Google is your friend. You’ll find tons of stories on this very subject. And not just our state too.

          • Derek May 29, 2025 (6:53 pm)

They mean in this specific case there’s nothing beyond a description. Blaming a crime that vaguely sounds like other reported crimes and attaching meaning to it does not equal proof, thanks. I am having a hard time understanding how you’re not getting this lol

          • Lauren May 29, 2025 (7:30 pm)

There is ZERO EVIDENCE that THIS INCIDENT is connected to any crime ring. Cmon people, rein it in.

    • M May 28, 2025 (4:03 pm)

Kind of surprised this racism was published, tbh.

      • Sara May 28, 2025 (4:32 pm)

Kind of surprised reporting a crime is considered racism, tbh.

        • M May 28, 2025 (5:25 pm)

Not referring to the crime, Sara. Referring to the language used by the commenter.

          • PotKettleBlack May 28, 2025 (7:08 pm)

I think the racism being referred to here is the fact that we seem to be confusing Romanian and Romani. They’re not the same thing at all. And, In addition to also not meaning Romanian, the word “gypsy” is a racial slur.

          • PotKettleBlack May 28, 2025 (7:21 pm)

Correct. The language here is the issue. Romanian and Romani are not the same thing. The reports describe a Romanian organization. They don’t say anything about Romani. The word “gypsy” is just a blanket slur to describe a couple of different groups.

  • Seattlite May 28, 2025 (3:08 pm)

As a senior, I never let any strangers near me especially creepy ones that want a hug.  I don’t wear expensive jewelry when I am out and about.  Situational awareness always needs to be at the forefront.

    • anonyme May 28, 2025 (5:52 pm)

Same here, except I never wear jewelry at all.  It’s discomfiting to reach a certain age and realize that you are a target because of it – whether the attempted crime is physical or cyber.  It doesn’t feel good to have to be suspicious all the time, but unfortunately that’s the world we live in.

  • Derek May 28, 2025 (8:37 pm)

One poster uses a slur and generalization and now the whole thread is posting as if this is case closed. Ridiculous.

    • anonyme May 29, 2025 (5:53 am)

Derek, I can’t help but notice that you are indignant at what you call “racism” but are completely silent (as most of the other commenters) on the fact that seniors are being targeted.  Ageism is rampant in our culture, which hardly anyone cares about.  Apparently only victims who meet certain criteria are worthy of your concern – in this case, ‘victims’ who are also perps?  Isn’t that a bit hypocritical?

  • CW May 29, 2025 (6:36 am)

Crimes are committed by SOME Romani, SOME Black folks, and most crime are committed by – wait for it – WHITE folks. Y’all be safe out there

  • Louis May 29, 2025 (8:55 am)

Rom here. Let me help you all out. Some Roma consider “Gypsy” to be a derogatory word, many do not. I grew up being called “Gypsy” and my family claim ownership of the term proudly. Not all, or even most, Roma are criminals. There are plenty, though, as outsider status tends to make people resourceful in those ways. Generations sadly and commonly repeat the past even in the face of better opportunity. Sadly, the marginalization of Roma is still strong around the world, especially so in Eastern Europe. The Romanian crime rings have a strong Romani element, but not all of them are Roma. I didn’t take offense at the original comment that sparked the discussion, so much as I noted its error in labeling the Romanian group as being Romani. There’s also no need to call out an ethnicity in the comment, as it tends to paint an entire ethnicity with a hurtful, and tiring brush. Romanticize us or demonize us. There never seems to be any in between.

  • TDKYoga May 29, 2025 (12:47 pm)

Thank you, Louis.  I do hope the criminals are caught quickly and that no one gets hurt.Take care, all!
