VIDEO: Transient orcas in the area

12:22 PM: If you’re up for early-afternoon whale-watching, Kersti Muul reports transient orcas are headed this way, southbound, toward the north edge of Elliott Bay at last report. They’re closer to the west side of the Sound, so you’d need binoculars. Let us know if you see them!

4:48 PM: Thanks to Jill Anderson for sending video of the orcas as seen off the Bainbridge ferry earlier!

Any word yet on what lasting harm was done to whales in this area by the entitled clowns who set off a bargeload of deafening fireworks last weekend?

None. A5 went north with rest of family. However it is detrimental to all wildlife

Whales are now off the north end of Blake Island with lots of surface activity 0151

What word would be coming for that? How does anyone measure any harm done? Whales are still around out there. You are asking a question that has no answer while large ships are travelling the sound right now that could be harming then as well. And Saturday night would be a issue if the private party did the show rogue. But they got permits and did everything they needed to do so I’m not sure what they did wrong

    “Surface activity?”
    What does that mean?
I looked for the whales but all I saw was a group of porpoises.
Were they any connection to that “surface activity?”

BINOCULAR, “Surface activity” likely refers to tail slaps, breaching, spyhopping (when an orca swims straight up out of the water enough to expose their head, and they take a look around) or other things we can more easily see as it breaks the surface of the water in a bigger way than just swimming.  Often lots of splashes are seen with surface activity, as well.

Surface activity, or ‘surface active’ are behaviors such as pec slap, tail slap, tail lob, breaching, spy hopping, cartwheeling and so forth. Could be a result of boat disturbance, post-[successful] predation behavior or other reasons we aren’t privy to, but many anthropomorphize at will.
