READER REPORT: WDFW enforcement on the West Seattle shore

Thanks to Mark for the photo of a state Department of Fish and Wildlife officer in action. He wrote, “Nice to see the checking for fishing licenses and catches at Lincoln Park!” You might have seen them elsewhere in West Seattle – at Don Armeni Boat Ramp on busy fishing days, for example. Here’s how WDFW explains its enforcement activities.

Are they going to give tickets to dog owners whose dogs running on the beach? And not picking up the poop? And the license?

    • WSB July 26, 2023 (2:27 pm)

These are state officers, not city park rangers.

      • Mike July 26, 2023 (5:54 pm)

Much less it’s not even close to what their job entails.

    • Ryan July 26, 2023 (2:55 pm)

Why dont we start appreciating the good things that happen before demanding that the world do more.

    • Ryan July 26, 2023 (6:21 pm)

Should they start giving parking tickets to violators also?  Perhaps even take on active duties as lifeguards?  How about solving murders while they’re at it?  Or should they go to your house and mow the lawn?

Well I wish (knowing it’s not going to happen) someone could ticket those inconsiderates that park in the bike trail at that fishing spot on the East Duwamish Waterway, Spokane St. (Harbor Island adjacent.)

Feels like it’s nearing the time where it’s going to start getting packed there.

Funny, I’ve only seen the WDFW officer there rarely, and only on off days/times, never when it was cranking shoulder-to-shoulder.

For all the people criticizing, blasting, dogchecker… I think the point they are trying to make is that dogs running and pooping on the beach can be a nuisance and toxic to local wildlife… they are not just being a Karen they have a valid point 🤷‍♂️… and maybe they’re wrong about who should enforce it but I swear to God any chance for someone to jump on someone on this blog because they don’t like what they say is rampant

      • Skeptic July 26, 2023 (9:50 pm)

Once you see someone’s Black Lab come out of the water at Alki Beach and stream some diarrhea into the water and on to the sand, the dog ban makes sense.  I’d love to see some tickets handed out.

        • Sharkweek July 27, 2023 (4:28 pm)

News flash: marine life poops also. And sometimes, it’s runny!

    • Jay July 26, 2023 (7:16 pm)

      Relax.

  • Eric1 July 26, 2023 (3:08 pm)

I love to see enforcement making sure everyone participates legally. There is no excuse for not paying for the privilege to fish as the license is the cheapest part of fishing.  They should confiscate gear as punishment for illegal fishing and really make it hurt 😁. Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will waste money for a lifetime.

Overfishing and illegal fishing need to be taken seriously as these resources are dwindling and may fail catastrophically in the not-too-distant future.  And, btw, fish do not exist for the sole use of humans, there are many species that depend on them for survival.  A valid argument can also be made that every species has a right to exist for its own sake, and not just as a ‘resource’.  If only humans were a ‘resource’ for another species, perhaps they wouldn’t be so greedy or so arrogant in regard to others.

When we talk about overfishing the oceans, we aren’t talking about a guy on the shore at Lincoln Park casting a single line. This is similar to the rhetoric that gets used to let the large polluters off the hook for producing 95% of carbon emissions while blaming individual consumers for the climate crisis.

      • Blbl July 26, 2023 (10:37 pm)

        Yes, Brian. Exactly.

        • Rob July 27, 2023 (12:25 am)

Yes but if it saves one fish. Another option is stop eating  fish.

      • Ron Swanson July 27, 2023 (10:37 am)

Yes, all those large corporations just leave that pollution machine running 24/7 for no reason, it doesn’t result from producing goods and services consumers demand…

Google “tragedy of the commons” and you’ll see that, in fact, the collective small actions of thousands of individuals do in fact create environment destroying effects, whether that’s consuming the goods those “big corporations” produce or overfishing local waterways.

People have a remarkable ability to partition themselves off from a problem with all kinds of rationales and excuses.  The quote from biologist Michael Trivers – “self-deception is the most ubiquitous of all human traits” – is one of my favorite quotes because it is so apt.  It is a human trait that stretches across political lines, ideologies, faiths, and creeds.

        • Brian July 27, 2023 (2:14 pm)

Oh cool, you’re acting as a mouthpiece for globalcorporations pro bono.  Honorable.

          • Ron Swanson July 27, 2023 (5:32 pm)

No, I’m just economically literate enough to understand that emissions from “big corporations” are the aggregate end product of consumer demand for goods and services.

Thank you ‘anonyme’! It’s heartwarming to read such a spot on statement!

    • anonyme July 27, 2023 (9:13 am)

Brian and BLBL, you are a big part of the problem.  The weak excuse of “well, someone else is causing more damage than I am, so I refuse to make even a tiny effort to contribute” is wreaking havoc at every level of life on this earth – environmental, social, political – you name it.  And yes, if it were just ONE person with this effed-up attitude, there would probably be little impact.  Unfortunately, there are millions of humans who believe that they are the only ones that matter, and that adds up – death by a thousand cuts. Just because someone goes 20 mph over the speed limit and you only go 15, doesn’t mean you’re not a jerk.  The effect is cumulative.

  • Me July 26, 2023 (4:18 pm)

I’m glad somebody is enforcing something.

    • Karen July 26, 2023 (7:34 pm)

      Right!!!!!

    • 1994 July 26, 2023 (8:45 pm)

I agree with you Me! Good to see somebody is enforcing something. So much goes unenforced in Seattle the city is going to the dog toilet.

    • Shiggy July 26, 2023 (9:54 pm)

This statement couldn’t be anymore true unfortunately! We’ll count it as a win.

  • Alki resident July 27, 2023 (8:54 am)

So many doomy  gloomy people live in this area. I’m so glad I had a chance to grow up elsewhere before my parents dragged us here. Everyone is so quick to complain about what other groups of people are doing. The bikers, the fishermen, the car riders, the dog owners, the motorcyclists. It’s like a gossip column here.

    • WSREZ July 27, 2023 (10:41 am)

You’re proving your own point here with your own words

    • Scarlett July 27, 2023 (1:49 pm)

To be honest, you have a point.   Seattleite’s do have an unflattering reputation for being judgmental, sour kill-joy’s.  As an example: I have a friend in Sacramento who invited a Seattle couple down for vacation and she got so tired of them comparing Sac to Seattle, unfavorably, she was glad to see them go home.     Still, it’s valuable to have this format to give us a chance to express ourselves.

  • Peterman July 27, 2023 (10:25 am)

Yeah, yeah, yeah… anyone got a fishing report?  Are the humpies here yet?   There was no sign of them up in midchannel last weekend.

    • CARGUY July 27, 2023 (11:51 am)

Should be soon! always fun every other year to boat into the duwamish and try your luck at the schools running up from the sound.

    • Alki resident July 27, 2023 (1:57 pm)

It’s great fishing right now. My friends took their boat out into Elliott Bay a couple of  days ago. Got  7 within a couple of hours. Lots of crab too

  • Just wondering July 27, 2023 (1:35 pm)

Is the guy who pulls up in a white box truck at the Don Armeni boat ramp to pump saltwater into tanks his truck doing a legal thing? It doesn’t seem like it would be illegal to take saltwater from the Sound but… it is weird. I’ve always wanted to ask WDFW.

  • Incredulous July 28, 2023 (8:44 am)

Astounded that ANY law is being enforced!Thank you, and more, please.

  • Adam Sellers July 28, 2023 (10:50 am)

Tell me, isn’t this just like police pulling people over randomly. Isn’t it illegal to be searched unless you’ve been witnessed to committing a crime or assumed to have committed a crime. Never once have I been asked for my permission to search or check my license. Ya something ain’t right.

  • Scarlett July 28, 2023 (11:41 am)

Excellent point, thanks, something I’ve never considered.

Sorry, comment time is over.
