WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Midday gunfire investigation

12:02 PM: Police are outside the Southwest Teen Life Center/Pool/Neighborhood Center building, investigating reports of gunfire involving people in two vehicles. No injuries are reported; police say witnesses reported the vehicles left the parking lot afterward, with at least one possibly seen northbound on 27th SW from SW Thistle. We’ve only caught one partial description, a “black sedan.” We’re checking on a report that nearby Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School are sheltering in place as a result. (Update: Confirmed.)

12:11 PM: Police have told dispatch they’ve found one shell casing “next to the community center.” The center is on the north side of a large lot that also is shared by Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (on its east side) and the city’s public COVID testing site (on its south side).

12:21 PM: Just talked with police at the scene (who are about to leave). The shell casing was found in the fire-lane area near the parking-lot gate.

12:25 PM: Police have just told dispatch it’s OK for the schools to end the shelter-in-place.

12:29 PM: Minutes later, police reported they found more casings “outside the community center.”

6:54 PM: Here’s the preliminary summary from SPD:

It was reported that one car cut off the other as they both entered the parking lot of The Southwest Athletic Center/COVID Testing site. The passenger of the vehicle that had been cut off got out of the car and fired one round. Vehicle one fled E/B on SW Thistle St. The suspect vehicle followed and then fired more rounds at vehicle one. Both cars then drove in different directions. No one was hit at the time of this (report) and there was no property damage. Evidence of (gunfire) was located.

My kids (1 at Sealth and 1 at Denny) texted me that they went into shelter in place at a bit before noon. They are still in shelter in place.  I hate that our kids have to deal with this kind of stress. Terrifying.

I just heard from my 8th grader at Denny. I too hate this, too. This is becoming a bit much these days. 😔

The black sedan looked like a Chrysler 200; the silver one was a denty compact Hyundai.

That is way too close to the school. Practically school property. My kid will eventually be at Sealth and I hope it becomes a safer area. Good luck to the police looking for them.

Are the covid testing site and community center staff ok and supported?

This incident may involve Stealth Students.  I live by Stealth and saw students running up my street hopping into cars and taking off driving really fast.  I walked out to 27th and asked other students what was going on.  They told me someone had a “metal” baseball bat and was attacking someone’s car.  The kids described it as a “parents car”. As the car drove off the kid with the bat tried to smash out the back window.   These students were upset and said they were going to tell the administration what they saw. As I was talking to the kids a silver car came down 27th from Kenyon going about 70.    I called the school they told me to call 911.  As I was on the phone with them we heard the gunshots.  Living in the neighborhood this year we have become used alot of activity.  It has a free for all feeling.  I’ve spoken to the school and with the COVID kids they have their hands full.  There are frequently  groups of kids on 27th and Elmgrove speeding through the neighborhood and and cars full of them stoned out of their minds.  Tons of litter. This morning I noticed an unusual amount of kids hanging out not in class.   It would be helpful to have a dialogue with the school officials and police.  Today the gunfire and the way the kids were driving was pretty terrifying.

The SPD preliminary summary is out (I’m adding it above) and it does not mention any school involvement. That aside, in the pre-pandemic past, the school has had annual safety meetings, so you might want to contact the principal (new this year) and/or the Southwest Precinct’s Crime Prevention Coordinator, Jennifer Danner. I don’t have the principal’s email – should be on the school website – but Jennifer’s contact info is here.

Way too many guns out there and most seem to be fired for NO reason!  More self control is needed by the gun carrying crowd.

  • anonyme January 26, 2022 (7:21 am)

There is no law and no test to determine whether or not an individual will use a gun inappropriately at some point.  None.  Humans cannot be controlled; guns can and should be.

So police and military shouldn’t have them either, correct?

  • A January 26, 2022 (1:34 pm)

So, we need to bring these safety meetings back as my student told me there was a fight on campus where a student’s backpack fell and a gun was seen. Security and Admin staff were alerted and choose not to take any action (lockdown + bag search) instead they claimed “no probable cause for a search” and then 30mins to an hour later shots were fired across the street. The admin needs to take responsibility for the safety of our students and their staff.

I heard a version of this rumor but the Sealth scholar describing it did not put much faith in third-hand details. A silver car was involved in the shooting, and was also beat-up looking on the side, so parts of Sealth Mom’s account could be related. The principal later emailed mentioning that a toy gun was seized at school and that it would be dealt with. I assume that gun was not involved in any shooting. Your account makes it sound as though the administration at Sealth does not take stuff like this seriously and I can only say that that has been the opposite of my experience. Staff have literally shown the student body that they put students’ safety above their own in past on-campus incidents.

      • Sealth Mom January 26, 2022 (5:11 pm)

Hi Jethro Sealth Mom here.  Did your scholar witness the shooting and Silver Car?  If so could they let the police know?  I meantioned the silver car when I spoke with the police but they said it didn’t match the description of the cars involved- gold and black were the colors they were focused on.

        • Jethro Marx January 26, 2022 (7:02 pm)

No, I did, from the testing site. The Hyundai looked gray or silver to me but witnesses observe differently and light waves can be a bit funny. I know another eyewitness saw the black car as a Ford, which it may be.

      • Jethro Marx January 26, 2022 (5:18 pm)

I’m sorry, I reread the message and it did not say a toy gun was seized, rather that it was concluded that the gun involved was a toy.

  • Denny parent January 26, 2022 (7:18 pm)

The school sent this out: “…we always want to provide accurate and timely information related to all potential concerns.  Early today, there was a rumor of a gun at Chief Sealth.  This was quickly and thoroughly investigated.  The conclusion of the investigation is that it was a toy gun.  Appropriate next steps are being taken related to this.  We also want to share that SPS Safety and Security, in collaboration with the Seattle Police Department, believe that these two situations are completely unrelated.  As always, safety and security is our top priority at both of our schools. We will be providing extra outside supervision at dismissal times today.  Thank you for your ongoing support!”

How insane do you have to be to shoot at someone because they cut you off. What happened to giving them the finger and being done with it? People are so weak minded these days.

  • MWSEA February 1, 2022 (1:38 pm)

Any updates?  Is SPD still actively on this case to find the involved parties?  Seems like they should have enough evidence to find the shooters.  This was way too close to home!

Sorry, comment time is over.
