ORCAS: Whales off West Seattle

10:35 AM: If you have eyes on Elliott Bay, watch for whales – just got word from Kersti Muul of “at least four orcas” seen in Elliott Bay. Let us know if you see them!

1:04 PM: Thanks to everyone for updates in comments. Kersti just texted that they’re now southbound passing Brace Point.

We just saw them off Brace point, looks like a boat really close to them.  Puget Sound Express Saratoga.   Maybe it’s ok, just looks super close.

We are watching them off of Arroyo Beach, and this boat got so close to the pod that we were screaming.

200 yards is the legal distance between a vessel and orcas.

If you see a boat following too close to the orcas, please call the Be Whale Wise/NOAA hotline: 1-800-853-1964, or email info@bewhalewise.org. Your report will be logged and investigated. Include pictures if you can.

Also please report any sightings to Whale Report via their app or website. The best way to protect the whales is to be sure that NOAA and WDFW Enforcement are aware of what you are seeing.

Thanks for the contact information for whale wise/NOAA. I sent them this photo. The boat looked closer than 200 yards from the pod.

Yesterday I also witnessed and reported the whale watch boat Saratoga to NOAA’s enforcement hotline, west seattle blog and orca network with a photo taken in the shallow bay between Lowman and Lincoln parks. The boat was literally right on top of the whales and was maneuvering clearly with engines on. I will also send to info@bewhalewise.org. Thankyou Donna and all!

Boats can turn off engines > 200 yards from orcas and then the orcas swim closer to the boat.  That is not illegal
