TRAFFIC ALERT: SW Barton blocked in Fauntleroy after driver hit pole

4:28 PM: Thanks to Dane Salle for the photos. SW Barton is blocked at 41st SW in Fauntleroy after a driver hit a pole that then fell onto the roadway. The driver was described via radio communication as “alert and conscious” when SFD got there.

5:58 PM: Just went by. Traffic is getting through now; the pole is coned off on the downhill side of the road.

I grew up at 40th and Barton and the westbound vehicles would hit that pole often as that’s where Barton jogs south a bit to accommodate where 40th juts out. Usually at night. Especially on weekends.

In city surveys for funding to address street and neighborhood projects I’ve asked for warning signs to be placed there as we see people curving that corner regularly. We live at that corner and watch these near misses all the time. What freaks me out the most is that SO many people walk down that stretch of Barton on the N side of street!! Including me and my 3 kids. What options do we have for city attention to this safety concern on this corner? How could we find out the frequency of accidents at this corner? Contact city DOT? Especially with higher ferry traffic due to bridge closure?

Correction: not “that” pole (41st) but the one on 40th.

I don’t like walking on that stretch of Barton either, especially with my dog.  Now others’ comments affirm my reluctance.  Now that there is more ferry traffic going up and down Barton (with the W. Seattle bridge out), there is a higher likelihood of accidents.  I support more control from the city on that stretch of road.

SW Barton St has always been pretty bad but recently has gotten even worse!  Speeding is the norm on this street and it’s really dangerous trying to cross the street to access Fauntleroy Park.  Thank goodness nobody got hurt!

What time of day were you trying to cross? When I’ve been down there people have been pretty well-behaved

Maybe this is why I saw a Rapid Ride bus driving east on SW 100th St.!! about 5ish.

I hope that house on the coroner didn’t have any damage to its front yard. I live in the area and often see an older gentleman out there working quite hard to keep things looking good

Sorry, comment time is over.
