UPDATE: Flipped-car crash at 49th/Spokane

12:37 PM: Another collision reported in north West Seattle – this time at 49th and Spokane, and the dispatcher described it as involving an overturned vehicle. No major response as everyone is reported to be out of the vehicle. We’re on the way to find out more.

12:59 PM: Photo added. No injuries. That’s the only vehicle involved, driven by a teenager, according to police, who are still talking to the people in the car to figure out how it happened.

Maybe the WSB should look into the flipped car phenomenon, seems every few days a car get flipped onto its lid..
Is it a strange West Seattle magnetic field,  Maybe some aliens taking control of the vehicle and flipping it?
Stay tuned, Does the WSB know’s the answer??, but will get back with us after a word for our sponsor…

This is flipping crazy, the car on its side missed making the club.  This driver clearly has joined the WS I Flipped my Car Club (WSIFMCC).  Too bad the club keeps expanding!

“Excuse me while I Flip this out.”

Thanks goodness that these kids were all right! The teenagers were probably on their way to the high school, the 10th-12th graders started at noon time.  There has to be some speed involved in flipping a car?!  All over WS, there are drivers driving increasingly more aggressively and faster, in areas that didn’t use to see that behavior at this level.  I think that correlates directly with these flipping cars. We need to ask the police to do some type of crack down, it is obvious that this is not their priority.  I think every day that I need a dash cam to record the crazy driving that I see, in just a single day.

Somebody needs to turn up the gravity.

Both traffic on the side streets along with folks speeding including parents has increased just with school starting folks need to slow down every one in a hurry someone is going to be killedhope parents who are driving their kids hear this

  • Norsegirl September 4, 2019 (2:57 pm)

Car flipping is such incredibly reckless and irresponsible behavior.

  • Quora September 4, 2019 (2:58 pm)

It’s simple really. People around these parts drive too damn fast and the police do nothing about it. Zero. Nothing. But hey, good thing they have a radar sign going up Admiral to deter speeders (laughs hysterically)

    • Jim Walker September 4, 2019 (4:39 pm)

The police cannot be everywhere all the time. It is our own responsibility to police ourselves. I don’t for one second believe that if an officer spotted a vehicle driving reckless enough to flip that they would turn their head.  I have concerns about policing but on this one I believe you are wrong.

      • KM September 4, 2019 (5:39 pm)

It is our own responsibility to police ourselves.” Sure! But that’s not working for many, and we certainly cannot safely or legally police each other. Yes, SPD can’t be everywhere all the time, AND I have witnessed reckless driving go unenforced right under SPD’s nose.  It’s time enact red light and speed cameras and light a fire under our city leadership to get SPD to monitor our dangerous roadways by enforcement. I hope the state legislature can make some headway on the camera issue so Seattle has more options.

      • Quora September 4, 2019 (8:23 pm)

Are you saying that you think the SPD does a fine job enforcing speeding laws in our city, and particularly in West Seattle? I’ve got a bunch of anecdotal evidence that says you are wrong, which doesn’t mean much, but there is nobody on god’s green Earth that can convince me that you are right. I realize resources are scarce, and that is usually the excuse given when the SPD has to defend their position on where resources do go, but speed enforcement has to be WAAAAAAAAY down the list of priorities. Accidents happened every day in our community and I’d bet the farm a majority are speed related.

I believe what Jim is saying is…that we need to report (license plate, make/model/color of the vehicle)  to police when we see reckless behavior.  All it takes is a phone call to 911.

I actually saw a motorcycle policeman giving out tickets on Admiral last Saturday morning!

Perhaps a tee shirt, I Flipped in West Seattle?

Beware. It’s the West Seattle Vortex. Causes cars to flip and turkeys to magically appear.

Remember when cars only got flipped by a group of drunks on St. Patrick’s Day? Those were the days.

  • ktrapp September 4, 2019 (4:18 pm)

A single car flip is pretty impressive!  Looking at that intersection, I don’t even see any major objects to glance off of to cause the flip.   Sounds like investigators might be wondering how it could have happened too.  I’m guessing the typical teenager “I was driving the speed limit, and the car just flipped over!” response won’t hold up to much scrutiny.

  • Lola September 4, 2019 (4:27 pm)

How many does this make now?  Are the streets that easy to flip on?  I have lived her all my life and never flipped a car.  And I am older than dirt. Lol.

    • Artur S Krutina September 5, 2019 (3:23 pm)

28 in the last four and a half years. 29 if you count the one in White Center a couple/few days ago. That’s an average of 6 a year! Just in West Seattle. I made a word doc with all of the dates and pictures. Quite the collection.

  • Scott September 4, 2019 (7:50 pm)

This happens in every city and it’s not a laughing matter although some of you seem to think it is.  Grow up.

  • JR September 4, 2019 (8:41 pm)

It’s actually surprisingly easy to flip a car.  It doesn’t take much speed. What it takes is a strong over-reaction at the wheel, or an offset impact. That’s just the physics of it (not to say that the posts lamenting fast or reckless driving aren’t true). Who knows what happened here (i’d Love to know, for sure). Maybe somebody learned how to drive on MarioCart…

Ralph Nader wrote “Unsafe At Any Speed” back in 1965. Nothing changed.

  • Canton September 4, 2019 (10:38 pm)

Hear there’s a new feature on cars. There’s a sensor that detects when a car is about to crash, it signals one wheel strut, to bounce strong enough, to put the car in turtle mode.

    • Kimo in Seattle September 7, 2019 (11:38 pm)

To Scott, I think it’s hilarious from a written perspective here in the WSB. And this point from Canton had me laughing so hard I couldn’t breath– tears from my eyes. This is the best comments section on WSB I’ve seen so far.
