WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen silver Subaru Forester

Stolen car to watch for: Sandy‘s 2005 silver Subaru Forester, stolen overnight Sunday, 4/23, in the northeast Admiral area, license plate AGF0410; Crime Watch reader report received today. Call 911 if you see it.

@ West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network: Crime-prevention coordinator’s plans; precinct commander’s updates…

Reader report: Crash victim’s mom looking for the ‘angel’ who helped him – and her

Were you – or do you know – the woman who cared for a crash victim in Admiral about this time Monday afternoon? His mom, Paula, is looking for you/her:

On Monday afternoon around 1:20, my son was involved in an accident and was struck by a car by the Metropolitan Market, I received a call from his phone and it was not him on the line; a woman’s voice said, “your son has been in an accident and was hit by a car.”

I work at Costco so I was about 20 minutes away; the woman said she was a nurse and she calmly talked me through what was happening, but all I heard were the sirens of the emergency vehicles in the background, She stayed on the phone with me as I rushed through my warehouse to let people know I was leaving; the whole time she is not just comforting my son, she is making sure I am calm enough to drive to them. We hung up and within seconds the EMT called me, stating my son was doing good, there was no head trauma and from the looks of things he was just bruised up a bit and they would not be taking him to the ER.

Because my son said he was not hurt that bad and his injuries were minor enough that I could take him to his doctor, by the time I reached my son (maybe 25 minutes from the first phone call) he was sitting on the curb alongside the lady who took care of him and called me. I was so happy to see my son in one piece – I think I was as shaken up as he was – that all I recall was her telling me, that the driver stopped and felt terrible; he stayed until the police and medical service left, and with that I gave her a hug and took my son straight to his doctor, who after evaluating him said he was just going to be sore for a couple days.

I owe this woman so much more than a thank you – she is nothing short of an angel to our family and I really wanted her to know just how grateful to her we truly are.

You can comment, or e-mail us at editor@westseattleblog.com and we’ll connect you.

P.S. We didn’t have a report on this incident Monday afternoon even though we sent a crew that way after seeing the “Med 6” response on the 911 log (which usually means either a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorcycle rider involved) – the scene cleared before we got there.

(WSB photo from Sunday: Some of the items dropped off in the first hour)

If you dropped off something during Sunday’s Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy Church, you were part of a BIG turnout, despite the rain! Judy Pickens shares the report:

Sunday’s Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy Church returned a near-record 20 tons of recyclables to the resource stream, bringing to 180 tons the total since the congregation’s Green Committee initiated this twice-yearly service in 2010. The crew from 1 Green Planet unloaded a record 450 vehicles and will be back to do it again on September 24.

P.S. If you couldn’t get to that event but have electronics to recycle – or something to shred – take note of this event next Saturday in The Junction (10 am-1 pm April 29th).

First-ever Mental Health Day @ Seattle Lutheran High School: ‘There is always hope’

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

“Let this be a day of healing and education.”

That was the hope voiced in the prayer that opened the first-ever Mental Health Day at Seattle Lutheran High School in The Junction.

It was intended to be life-saving – but not dour. Humanities chair Tim Caudle, the organizer, also promised students, “Today is going to be a fun day – so you guys can learn that there is hope, there is a future.”

Parents were alerted more than a month in advance, and provided with an outline of what would be discussed.

We were invited to sit in on the assembly that began the day – with special guests from the Jordan Binion Project, founded by a couple who lost a child to suicide – a child the age of many who sat listening to them in the SLHS gym last Thursday morning – a child who had just turned 17.

This was the epitome of the urgency voiced by Caudle, who said that he and SLHS principal Dave Meyer had been to three funerals of people with some connection to the school.

The statistics told the story: Mental illness affects one in five people directly – and their loved ones.

That’s where Deb and Willie Binion stepped up to talk about the nonprofit they co-founded to educate high-school students about mental illness, named for their son Jordan. Read More

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Tire/wheel stolen; shared-car vandalism; packages taken

The latest West Seattle Crime Watch reader reports:

TIRE/WHEEL THEFT: The photo and report are from Matt in Alki:

I live on the corner of 59th Ave SW and Admiral. When I went out to my car this morning to leave for work I came upon this. Someone had jacked just one entire tire/wheel with bolts. Has anyone else in the area had this happen or did any of my neighbors notice anything unusual last night?

SHARED-CAR VANDALISM: Last night, somebody smashed the window of a car2go vehicle left parked outside Ben‘s house on 8th SW in Highland Park:

He says 911 told him he couldn’t file a report because he wasn’t the victim. After multiple tries, he reached car2go, which said they would report it and send someone over to clean up and get the car.

PACKAGE TAKEN: The video and report are from Isaac on Puget Ridge:

16th Ave right across from South Seattle College. Happened today 4/25 at 12:32 pm.

PACKAGES, MAIL TAKEN: From Adam in the 3000 block of SW Avalon Way:

We have had two packages stolen from our home, one on 4/10 @ 3:35 AM and also on this Saturday @ 02:11 by different people. Both are outgoing food delivery coolers to be picked up by FEDEX in the morning which is why we place them outside before we go to bed.

Also last week our mailboxes were ripped open and the mail stolen.

MEETING REMINDER: Neighborhood crime/safety concerns? The West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network meets at 6:30 pm at the precinct, with new Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Burbridge as guest speaker. All welcome. (2300 SW Webster)

MYERS WAY CAMPERS: City sets next ‘community conversation’ for May 15th

(WSB photo of Camp Second Chance, taken last month)

Just in from the city’s director of homelessness George Scarola – a third “community conversation” about the now-sanctioned encampment Camp Second Chance on the city-owned Myers Way Parcels and the non-sanctioned campers in the area:

At the community meeting on February 1st, there was a request to arrange a third meeting that would focus on public-safety issues related to homelessness along Myers Way South:

*Issues relating to the RVs parked along Myers Way and the unsanctioned encampments east of Myers Way;

*Concerns raised by community members regarding 9-1-1 calls;

*The City’s ongoing efforts to remove the trash along Myers Way; and,

*A progress report from Camp Second Chance.

That will all be part of this:

3rd Community Conversation re: Myers Way Homeless Encampment

Monday, May 15th

7:00 – 8:30 PM

Joint Training Facility, 9401 Myers Way South

WSB coverage of the February 1st meeting is here; our coverage of the December meeting is here. Scarola, meantime, briefed the City Council two weeks ago (WSB coverage here) and CSC’s population was listed as 33 at the time, just under half its current capacity.

 |   Development | West Seattle news

Eight months after its first Design Review meeting (WSB coverage here; official city report here), 5458 California SW has a date for its next, and possibly final, one: June 1st. The project is a three-story building with six live-work units, planned to replace the 109-year-old “log house” on the site that currently serves as home to Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), which will move to a new location when its lease expires this summer; the house, as reported here in March, has been sold and will be moved to a new site. Meantime, the design packet for the June 1st hearing (6:30 pm, Senior Center/Sisson Building, 4217 SW Oregon) isn’t out yet, but we’ll publish an update when it is.

West Seattle beaches: Low-low-tide season about to start

That was the scene this morning at Anchor Park along Duwamish Head, which is one place you might want to be later this week when low-low-tide season starts, for a good overview of the shore, or a starting point to walk along it. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will bring the first minus-two-feet daytime low tides of the year – -2.3 at 1:03 pm on Friday, -2.4 at 1:51 pm on Saturday, -2.1 at 2:41 pm on Sunday. So far, the weather looks best on Saturday.

P.S. Memorial Day weekend will bring the first minus-three-feet tides of the year, and Seattle Aquarium beach naturalists too.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday watch

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

6:48 AM: Good morning! No incidents in/from West Seattle right now.

PATH ALERT: A texter reports a tree down on the bike/foot path near the scene of yesterday morning’s Harbor Avenue crash. This was mentioned in comments last night and as we noted there, it needs to be reported to SDOT the same as if it were road debris – 206-386-1218 if outside business hours, 206-684-ROAD otherwise.

CAMERA NOTE: Still only one SDOT camera working on the high bridge, so that’s why only one is featured above again today.

8:01 AM: Slow going but still incident-less. Note for bus riders: Last week we told you about Metro‘s new survey asking your opinion on two options for “simplifying” fares. If you’re downtown at lunchtime, you’re also invited to drop in to today’s noon-2 pm meeting at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson) to talk with Metro reps in person.

8:23 AM: SFD has been dispatched to a crash reported on the eastbound West Seattle Bridge ramp to northbound 99.

8:46 AM: We haven’t had an update from SDOT but the 911 log shows that Seattle Fire units have closed out the call.

WEST SEATTLE REPAVING: City says it might move Roxbury up to 2019, as it kicks off outreach for 2 projects including Avalon

In our recent reports on West Seattle roads in need of repaving, and the ensuing comments, 35th SW and Delridge Way SW dominated the discussion. Tonight, we received SDOT e-mail announcing the start of “outreach” for two other repaving projects, including “fact sheets” with maps for each.

One is SW Roxbury between 15th SW and 35th SW – originally in the city plans for 2021, but now described as “as soon as 2019”:

The other is SW Avalon Way and three blocks of 35th, still on the list for 2019:

We’ve already mentioned Avalon, when the repaving plan was noted on a map related to the upcoming Harbor/Spokane/Avalon/Manning Improvements project. But news of a potentially earlier timetable for Roxbury repaving is somewhat out of the blue. Tonight’s e-mail from SDOT communicator Dan Anderson says a postcard about Avalon has been sent, and one for Roxbury “is coming soon.” Avalon also has an online survey, and each project, says Anderson, will have “a public event” in the next month or so.

We have a lot of followup questions and couldn’t ask them tonight since all this arrived fairly late. But we wanted to get this info out for starters, and we’ll be following up tomorrow. In the meantime, Anderson also mentioned e-mail addresses you can use for questions or comments:

avalonpaving@seattle.gov
roxburypaving@seattle.gov

SOCCER: West Seattle HS wins crosstown-rivals match against Chief Sealth IHS

The sun showed up this afternoon for the only regular-season boys-soccer match of the year between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School. The Wildcats got the win, 1-0. It would have been a bigger gap if not for the hard work of Sealth goalkeeper Levi Erdman:

That one Wildcats goal by Alex Coronado (#4, below) came after Erdman was knocked down – and he stayed down for a while, but got up and the game resumed.

You can see both goalkeepers in action in our short clip:

WSHS is now 6-2-5 overall; Sealth is 4-8-0. The Wildcats’ next game is at home (Walt Hundley Playfield, 34th SW/SW Myrtle) at 4 pm Wednesday vs. Lakeside; the Seahawks also have a 4 pm home game on Wednesday, at SWAC vs. Seattle Prep.

YOUTH SOCCER: Highline Premier FC tryouts continue this week

Soccer player(s) in the house? Highline Premier FC (WSB sponsor) continues tryouts for new age groups this week, starting tomorrow. Here’s the update from HPFC:

Highline Premier FC has had fantastic tryouts for all age groups up to this point and formed some solid teams for the 2017/18 season. Next up are those girls and boys born in 2006 and 2007 with tryouts set for Tuesday, April 25th; Wednesday, April 26th; and Friday, April 28th, @ Walt Hundley Playfield (Girls 5:45 – 7:15 pm and Boys 7:15 – 8:45 pm).

Also, because of strong demand, we are holding additional supplemental tryouts for our 2009 age group on Tuesday, April 25th, and Wednesday, April 26th, also @ Walt Hundley, from 5:45 – 7:15 p.m.

Take this opportunity to register your child by clicking here and having them showcase their skills with some of the best talent in the surrounding area and receive some amazing coaching to boot. See you on the pitch!

Walt Hundley Playfield is in High Point, at 34th SW and SW Myrtle.
