TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday updates; bridge crashes

(Click any view for a close-up)

6:29 AM: No incidents in or from West Seattle so far this morning. Rainy, though.

7:48 AM: Texter reports a crash on the eastbound bridge near Nucor. No fire callout on the 911 log, so apparently no major injuries.

8 AM: Just had the dispatch for that. Right lane blocked; no injuries reported but “one vehicle is not drivable” so it’s not going to clear quickly.

8:25 AM: Now another dispatch for a crash on the eastbound bridge, this one described as closer to the 99 exit. So if you’re headed toward the bridge – beware. Consider waiting a while if you can.

8:31 AM: That one has cleared, but the other one is still blocking, further west, as SDOT tweeted:

8:42 AM: SDOT says that crash is now clear too – so the bridge should be getting back to something resembling normal.

10:05 AM: … but not for long. Now, yet another crash on the eastbound bridge, this time reported to be under the 99 overpass.

There is a #56 bus stopped at the gore point exit to 99. Not really blocking though.

Still bad both lanes from down the hill all the way to i5. Bus lane apparently ok to use by cars :)

      Amen

This must be some sort of record (number of accidents). It’s unbelievable how backed up it is still at 10 AM.

The one at 99 is relatively new and said now to be blocking two lanes.

The latest wreck is tanker truck vs. car right at choke point under 99, WS bridge eastbound.  Took me 1/2 hr to go 1000ft. Many fire trucks, ambulances and cops arriving as I passed.

It is a mess.  Shows how vulnerable we are to Bridge traffic.  It’s only going to get worse with all the WS growth.

  • Joe January 26, 2016 (10:39 am)

How many is that today going eastbound? 3?  Can those involved in the accidents today or in the past come on here and provide a root cause analysis as a proactive measure?

@935, while I agree with you to an extent, calm down. Must be hell going though life that stressed out all the time. Glad I don’t. Life happens, deal with it. You don’t know the situation of the accidents, and its out of your control, so why in the world would you be so angry?

  • old timer January 26, 2016 (11:10 am)

It’s not the traffic we are vulnerable to, it is the self-entitled, ‘me first, up your’s’ drivers that are the key threat.

I was stuck in the 10 to 10:30 backup but I am so fortunate as to realize it is/was not all about me.  A tanker truck coming up from Harbor Island collided with a passenger  sedan as the tanker  moved into the inside lane which I presume was occupied by the sedan.  I did not see the collision so make no judgement about that specific incident, though the circumstances may be familiar to anyone who drives out of West Seattle on a regular basis.  It seems that the trucks assume they have the right of way because they are bigger, and other drivers get testy about the bad manners one encounters in that area.  Since I am not a perfect person,  or a perfect driver, again I’ll withhold judgement.  It is, however, a great time to resolve to behave better in my car, to pay attention, and to yield sometimes when my competitive nature resists that.   Giving way to another driver may be less a sign of weakness than a desire to arrive at my destination alive and uninjured.

Sorry, comment time is over.
