Update: 2 people hurt in South Delridge shooting outside 7-11

(Photo added: South Delridge 7-11, at which police say this started)
4:38 AM: Police and fire have responded to the 9000 block of 20th SW for an assault-with-weapons call with two victims. Per emergency radio, both are in their 20s and both have gunshot wounds – one to the leg, one with a “grazing wound” behind her knees. The gunfire is believed to have come from someone in a car. More to come.

4:50 AM: According to radio communications, the person shot in the leg is a 29-year-old man who will be transported by SFD medic unit; the person with a grazing wound to her legs is an 18-year-old woman who’ll go to the hospital via private ambulance. The latest description of the vehicle is “gold,” with the shots believed to have been fired by a “white male,” with “three black males” also in the car.

Our crew at the scene is seeing one person being treated at the Montridge Arms Apartments (photo added above); police also are at the nearby 7-11.

4:55 AM: New possible description of the vehicle: Gray Taurus; police are still sorting it out.

5:01 AM: From our crew at the scene: Police say this might have started as a person-to-person theft at the 7-11, between the victims and the people in the car. The victims made it across the street to the apartment building under their own power. This is not affecting traffic on Delridge Way.

5:14 AM: More from what police said at the scene: They’re not certain whether the “grazing” injury suffered by the female victim were from bullets or “shrapnel.” Again, neither victim has a life-threatening injury. No one in custody so far. People in the area say they thought they heard five shots. Police are still talking to witnesses to sort things out, including the vehicle/suspect descriptions.

6:14 AM UPDATE: Police have just published a summary on SPD Blotter; they now confirm the man was shot, the woman hurt by “shrapnel.” The item at issue in the “theft” they told us about is now reported to have been a cell phone. The conflicting vehicle descriptions also are mentioned – either gold Buick or gray Taurus.

9 AM NOTE: We went by in the 7 am hour and noted that Robbery Unit detectives had joined other officers on scene, still behind the yellow tape.

The firearm discharge report woke me up. Police are at the 711 putting up crime tape. I heard three individuals yelling before the police arrived. I of course called 911 dispatch and told them everything I heard. Several police vehicles are stopped on delridge in front of that 711.

I live near 18th and 106th and sirens have been going by for 10 min or so, sounds like a huge response

    • WSB September 5, 2014 (4:45 am)

Yes, with two people injured it would be even bigger than the “standard” assault-with-weapons response.

  • Ennui29 September 5, 2014 (5:01 am)

Thanks for the updates WSB. I wish they’d raze the Montridge Arms to the ground. There are constant problems involving the inhabitants of those dilapidated, slum-like apartments.

    • WSB September 5, 2014 (5:06 am)

Enn, we’ve updated. Not sure that it happened at the apartments – police tell us and other media at the scene that it apparently started at the 7-11 across the street and the victims made their way to the apartments. All still being sorted out, including the conflicting descriptions of the car involved.

  • Ennui29 September 5, 2014 (5:09 am)

Thanks WSB. I hope the victims are alright. I wonder if they chose to flee to the Montridge apartments out of sheer proximity, or because they have a connection to those apartments. I suppose me more info will be forthcoming. I can’t believe you guys had someone on the scene so quickly!

I heard about three shots at 4:20ish. Looked out the window of my house to see if it was within my view. Unfortunately, sound carries on my street and I couldn’t pinpoint where it came from. It is always scary to see something like this happen only two streets away.

7-11 and all the other cheap fortified beer shops around here are a huge problem.
They cater to cheap high volume and alcohol content customers. I live near one which is also near a bus stop so we constantly have low class thugs buying junk beer then slamming them in the bushes before and after their bus rides.
Can we change the local laws to ban sales of this cheap alcohol in the area?
I may go a long way to curtailing some of the violence and crime we see in this area…

More proof that nothing good happens out there after mid night, especially in 7-11 parking lots.

Fred, This WSLCB page looks like a good place for you to initiate the process of requesting an Alcohol Impact Area:

    I live like 8 blocks I didn’t hear anything.

  • Reid September 5, 2014 (8:24 am)

Yes, let’s ban more things! Always the answer!

White Center/Delridge (the location in question is essentially on the cusp of the two) is a low income area. Crime is prevalent. Banning high-alcohol beverages won’t change that, and by all accounts thus far had nothing to do with this incident in the first place.

Perhaps if the victims in question had been armed themselves, the thugs in question would have been more reluctant to accost them.

    ” a crime a day keeps gentrification away”-me

  • KM September 5, 2014 (8:47 am)

    Oh Fred.

  • JoAnne September 5, 2014 (8:47 am)

    ^^^Good one, sophista-tiki

  • Dennis September 5, 2014 (9:00 am)

    @ Reid.

Perhaps. Or, the thugs would now have a couple of additional weapons. You don’t mention the training that would be needed to have a hope of making a positive difference.

  • Lindsey September 5, 2014 (9:11 am)

What? This is pretty solidly Delridge, Reid. White Center starts at Roxbury.

And for the love of God, don’t ban beer sales. I’m not a criminal, I’m a homeowner (not suggesting that’s mutually exclusive) and I like cheap alcohol every now and then. That little 7-11 is run by a nice family. It is even open at that time of the day? I think that this had more to do with people being out and about at 4am than anything else.

  • Villagegreen September 5, 2014 (9:30 am)

Such a ridiculous argument. Members of rival gangs are armed and they seem to have no issues whatsoever accosting each other. Didn’t work out so well for that guy who was robbed down near Luna Park last year either. Brandished his gun and was summarily shot.

  • Reid September 5, 2014 (9:47 am)

You are correct, a rudimentary knowledge of training is neccessary in order to effectively use a pistol. Totally invalidates my point, of course *eye roll*

Villagegreen, IMHO, the victim in the Luna Park robbery shouldn’t have “brandished” the gun. One does not draw their weapon unless they intend to use it, and use it immediately.

  • Dennis September 5, 2014 (11:03 am)

    @Reid.

A “rudimentary knowledge of training” to “effectively” use a pistol may be adequate on a gun range, but in real life it may just give you the confidence to get yourself killed, *eye roll*. Police-grade training is what I’m talking about.

  • Shae September 5, 2014 (11:17 am)

    @Phil

Did it happen after midnight? Or before?

  • WSB September 5, 2014 (11:22 am)

This happened minutes before our first report. The call went out at 4:30 am.

As a lifelong ‘night owl’ and decades-long night/early-morning worker, I would also beg to differ that nothing good happens after midnight. I have no knowledge of who the victims are here, or what they were doing, but not everyone has the luxury of working 9 to 5 and not having to leave again until after the sun rises.
    .
Also a general reminder that our rules prohibit overtly victim-blaming comments (generally, they just won’t be published, although, apologies, once in a while one gets through). – TR

  • Shae September 5, 2014 (11:24 am)

    Woosh.

Just trying to make light of the situation.

  • Shae September 5, 2014 (11:30 am)

In the sense that it is always simultaneously before and after midnight…

  • forgotmyname September 5, 2014 (11:40 am)

sophista-tiki is totally right – I for one would prefer to have the graffiti laden abandoned houses and crack dens formerly on my block back instead of having to suffer with all the working class families and reputable businesses that are, frankly, ruining White Center. Plus, I was here first – so no fair someone else moves in. If they can’t afford to live in Ballard where they belong they should abandon their dreams of home ownership.

Hi Everyone! Sick of this crap? Me too. The WWRHAH (the area’s community council) and HPAC (the area’s other cc) will hold a joint meeting, Wednesday, September 24th at 6:30 at the Highland Park Improvement Club. Our topic? CRIME! Whoot. And we will have SPD there to talk about it – and talk about it to.

AmandaKH (and the many other volunteers), THANK YOU for your efforts to make our community better and hopefully safer!

  • Ajfrdkill September 6, 2014 (5:49 pm)

For what it’s worth, the robbery victim at Luna Park did not simply brandish his firearm. He fired it. Yes he was shot but he chose to defend himself when accosted by an armed criminal who likely would have shot him anyway. The criminal was quickly apprehended when his girlfriend called 911 because he had been shot and collapsed as he was getting home…

this is the female that was injured, I was grazed on one leg, and a bullet went thru the back of my knee cap thru a enter and exit wound. my sister and her bf do know people at those apartments. but I don’t communicate with them because they are a bunch of druggies. We are okay, we are not drunks. I am 19 years old. I was there with my sister and her boyfriend. they are homeless and I was needing to charge my phone.

    • WSB September 14, 2014 (11:09 am)

I hope you are recovering OK. Thank you for the update.
