West Seattle weekend scenes: ‘Ultimate’ win; stonework ‘helper’

From Sanislo Elementary mom Lisa, a photo at the end of Saturday’s Ultimate Frisbee match between Sanislo and Daniel Bagley Elementary. Lisa says the Sanislo All-Stars (fourth- and fifth-graders coached by third-grade teacher Ellen O’Connor, who also coaches Denny International Middle Schools UF players) came out victorious. (Reminder note, Seattle Public Schools are on spring break all week long, returning to class Monday 4/25.)

And from Tim, a postscript of sorts to our Friday night story about “Scottie Joe,” who’s been installing the facing outside the future A Terrible Beauty at California/Edmunds:

Tim shared that photo of his 5-year-old daughter Akela, saying “Scottie Joe” let her “install one of the stones and told her that whenever she came by she will remember that she put that one rock in.”

Lets see if someone can stay in business for more than a year and a half at that spot. Any bets?.

    Should I sugarcoat my thoughts?

My bets on the beauty. I think there have been a number of not so successful places in WS not because of location but because they get the community wrong IMO. We love comfort food, good libation and casual warm settings. Good times at reasonable prices, no pinkies up needed. A proper family pub should be very welcome. Just IMO of course but husband and I will be in very soon after the doors are open.

Hopefully A Terrible Beauty will have the luck of the Irish when it comes to that ill-fated corner. ;-)

Dunno why, but I have a (good) feeling a Terrible Beauty will be with us here in WS a LONG time. This corner isn’t cursed (what a superstitious notion anyway!), nor is parking the real issue (there is plenty of free parking in the Junction, you simply may have to walk a block or two – and if so, so what?)…
    .
IMO, the past problem(s) have been restaurants/bars that aren’t the right fit for our community. I can’t wait for Terrible Beauty to open. If the food is good, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the service friendly, how can it fail? It can’t. People WILL come. I know I will. :)

At one point in West Seattle there was a immigrant (was a stowaway) from Scotland who was an active stone mason was a close friend of my grandfather. Building residential retaining walls of stone. I believe from rivers or our sound, just south of the lighthouse on Alki half a block that cobble stone bulkhead was his work. Also just a block or so from A Terrible Beauty on 42nd SW is more of his work. I believe was around the last half or earlier of the last century.

Sorry, comment time is over.
