West Seattle Thursday: Alki Council, road work, low tide …

Thanks to David Hutchinson for sharing that photo of a seagull regaling its own reflection. David is part of the Alki Community Council meeting, which happens to be having its monthly meeting tonight, 7 pm, Alki UCC (6112 SW Hinds), agenda includes the Summer Streets “car-free day” on May 22nd (the day starts with West Seattle 5K – signed up yet?) and The Whale Trail. Also of note:

SYLVAN WAY SPOT PAVING: Scheduled to be done today and tomorrow.

LOW TIDE: Not as low as the past two days, but still a good one for beachwalking – 2:04 pm, -2.1. Thanks to Lisa Stencel for sharing this colorful closeup from her beach visit during yesterday’s low tide:

MAUNDY THURSDAY: Looking for Holy Week church services? That’s part of what you will find on the WSB Easter page (along with egg hunts and brunches). Still not too late to let us know if we are missing something – editor@westseattleblog.com – thank you!

OK….call me whatever you want, but it’s something that bothers me…..sorry First, let me say something clear. There is no such thing as a seagull. There are many birds that are gulls but none are named “seagulls.” We seem to continue naming this bird incorrectly for lack of knowing what it is, but always remember that there is no such bird called a Seagull.

The gulls we have here in the Puget Sound are typically Western Gulls and Glaucous-Winged Gulls.

Thanks, Cowp, I’m all for extreme technical accuracy but in this case, seagull is even in the dictionary as “a popular name for gull” … so we are not completely incorrect here.

I was born in a seacoast town (San Diego) and have heard it all my life. Will acknowledge it as slang, perhaps, but I’m not going to attempt to ID any sea … er … gulls we mention, since with my luck I’ll be dead wrong! – TR

    Another unbeleivable photo!

Jeez. Seagull is fine, as long as you’re not talking about inland gulls. And you forgot Thayer’s, Bonapart’s, mew, California, Heermann’s, glaucous, and all the hybrids. And David Hutchinson knows the difference (glaucous-winged?)!

    Fabulous photo!

Sorry, comment time is over.
