Zippy’s Giant Burgers move countdown: 1 month till new location

Exactly one month from today, Zippy’s Giant Burgers is scheduled to open in its new White Center location (9614 14th SW, February photo at right). WSB contributor Deanie Schwarz – who broke the story last month – talked with Zippy’s owner Blaine “Zippy” Cook this morning, and he says he’s optimistic they’ll make the target date – they’re continuing to work on the new space even as they move toward the scheduled April 16 closing date at their original Highland Park location. (If you’re just coming in on the story – they’re moving because the building’s future is uncertain, after its previous owner lost it to foreclosure). Deanie reports that Zippy’s plans to keep all the trademark nuances of its current location, with new fun features. Cook told her that the “bun wall” – an image suggesting a sesame-seed bun – will be painted this weekend at the new location, along with “soda-pop graphics” in the (much larger) bathrooms. The counters and tables will have the familiar charcoal-boomerang surfaces, and there will be booths too, all atop a newly polished concrete floor. In addition, an alcove will house pinball machines, and an old-time photo booth is planned. Meantime, on closing day, April 16th, Zippy’s plans to keep serving until the food literally runs out, and then will race into the finishing touches till the scheduled April 25th reopening.

Excited for the new and improved Zippy’s! Meanwhile, someone has taken down most of what used to be JoJo’s coffee stand. Shuttered stores are never a good sign so hopefully someone has taken an interest in reviving that property in some form.

so excited for Zippy’s new location! it’s going to be epic for them to have all that space!

“Go Zippy. Go!” So excited for you guys. Will miss you being close by, but will make the trip. :)

  • Beth March 25, 2011 (3:23 pm)

Yeah. Anyone know what happened to JoJo’s?

Dude WC is becoming the burger-pizza-ice cream-pinball-rollerskates capitol of Seattle! PS–The Triangle Pub also has some good grub if you get the hankering for a kid-free zone.

Anyone besides me think that zippys is a bit overrated? It’s good, but I’d rather travel across the bridge, maybe further to find a far better burger elsewhere. Jeez.. We got one new burger joint that’s not a fast food chain and this place goes crazy. Sorry to say but I’m Sure other people will agree that zippys ain’t all it cracked up to be. I understand that the atmosphere is great, but bottom line is that there are better burgers out there! Hard to put up with all this commotion about a burger place.

Plus, I know they will fix this in the new location, but the fact that you have to pay cash or use a fee-charging ATM was an immediate turn off to me

  • gannonjf March 25, 2011 (4:58 pm)

.25cents is a super expensive fee charging ATM huh?

Nice to hear about a local business with so much support, but will someone please explain why this burger place is different from, say, Burger King?

I love Zippy’s, it’s totally worth it, and I am actually grateful for their cash only stance. Can’t imagine driving across the bridge for my faves. West Seattle is unbridled optimism about food — Spring Hill, Fresh, and Mashiko all offer fine dining beyond burgers and so I don’t have to. Finally: the difference with Zippy’s is that everything is fresh, reasonably portioned and tastes like your mom or grandma would have made had either been a great cook. It’s slow fast food. :-)

You could find fresh at taco time. I’m just saying that there is way better stuff out there. No prob with your opinion, but I believe folks here have been so caught up in west Seattle stuff, that true visions are clouded. If dicks would have came here, zippys would have been an afterthought. I’ve lived in west seattle my whole life, and love it here, but along with many others, I believe there is betterfood out there than this place. Food for thought.

  • Robert March 25, 2011 (7:40 pm)

It sure is slow- you are right

Like I said before – had Zippy’s once. It was good but onion rings – not good. Way better onion rings at Jack in the Box. And WC – really??? I recently found out that there is a Dollar Tree over there. But the 2 times I’ve been there I felt like I might be mugged in the parking lot or have my car broken into while I’m inside shopping. I’d rather drive the distance to Burien. No thank you WC.

What a bunch of downers! Geeze guys, Zippy’s is a “mom and pop” just trying to make a living. And guess what, a bunch of people love them and support them! It’s okay if you don’t want to, but please stop knocking the neighborhood and the people in it. Drive to Burien! Hell, drive “over the bridge”. There is a TON of good food in Burien and “over the bridge”, but it will take you longer to drive there, order and then drive back than it will waiting for Zippy’s ;)

burger king and jack in the box are not in the same ball park as zippy’s- that’s just absurdI one thing that makes Zippy’s special, is they make an amazing vegetarian burger too- easily the best in the city. to the person who’s only been to white center two times, you should live a little… you are missing out on Full Tilt, and Proletariat Pizza and Salvadoran Bakery and Cafe Rozellas and Pho and more and soon Zippy’s too. better check yourself before you wreck yourself! :)

  • datamuse March 25, 2011 (11:58 pm)

Since you ask, Robert, no, I don’t think it is. That’s the thing about personal preference. (I can’t speak to the onion rings. I’m allergic to onions.)
    .
I’m not going to tell people to go to White Center if you feel unsafe there, but I’ve got to say that the only place in Seattle I’ve been physically assaulted is downtown (in broad daylight, I might add) and the only place my car has been broken into is Seattle Center. For what it’s worth.
    .
Personally, I like living near White Center, and it’s looking and feeling better than a lot of Capitol Hill is these days. What can I say, it reminds me of my hometown.

  • Jj March 26, 2011 (1:28 am)

Zippy’s has some of the best burgers in Seattle hands down. The affinity with Dicks is the one i dont understand.

  • Nulu March 26, 2011 (8:42 am)

Robert we are all waiting burgerlessly.

Please list all of those, “far better burger(s) elsewhere.”

  • 35this35mph March 26, 2011 (9:31 am)

Wow such harsh hatage. Differing opinion is fine but thread cr@pping others’ enthusiasm is just… yeah.

What I wanna know is if Zippy’s is gonna switch from “Wesseatle” To “Whicenter” burgers?

  • foyboy March 26, 2011 (10:00 am)

Dear robert I think it’s great that you won’t be standing in front of me at Zippys. It just got shorter to get a great burger.

  • highland park resident March 26, 2011 (2:50 pm)

Zippy’s is special because of the amazing bean burgers, the use of chili on the burger, and their hand-pulled malts. Yum.

  • Robert March 28, 2011 (2:44 pm)

I’d take a dicks deluxe any day over any burger there, also, in bellevue there is a place called wibbleys that I’ve been going to for years with my mom. First time I web to zippys with my mom and her friends that have also been to wibbleys, EVERYONE expected A lot because of all of the hype. Turns out we couldn’t figure out what was so special. We left thinking we wished we had gone to wibbleys instead, when in fact we were so excited to see what all the commotion about zippys was about. I don’t know, maybe my expectations were too high, but bottom line is they just arent that great.

  • mike April 2, 2011 (3:54 pm)

Zippy’s is good, but I’m not gonna go to WC for it…sketchy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
