MLK Day 2011: ‘Impromptu day of service’ for West Seattle kids

Many people spent this MLK Day as they spent previous ones – volunteering in ways big and small. Some joined in organized events; some came up with their own, as did Annabelle Allen, Hayden and Anne Wainwright, and Molly Allen: Sharing the photo, Mark Wainwright described their efforts as an “impromptu … Day of Service,” explaining:

They picked up a bunch of trash along California from Charlestown to Hinds. Great work, kiddos! (And thanks to the moms, Jane and Shana, for the encouragement!

Doing this will also probably make you less likely to litter as teens. We have a real problem with teenagers littering on our block, and it’s upsetting. We must all respect our community to keep it a great place to live, and you kids definitely do that! Thanks for your service to our community.

I’ve done this with my daughter along 35th and down Barton to Target. It’s unbelievable how people just throw trash out and don’t give it a second thought. I’ve gone with bags the same size as the kids had and between the two of us ran out of room before we got to Target. Good for those kids to do something good.
