West Seattle coyotes: Sunrise Heights, Marine View Drive, Admiral

Two Make that three coyote reports in one day, from different parts of the peninsula – read on for details (including the third, sent after we first published this):

This one came in tonight, from Aaron in Sunrise Heights:

Just thought I’d write to let you know that I saw a coyote heading into the bushes that separate my house [7700 block 30th ave SW] and EC Hughes Playground [map].

I thought I’d mention it because there are quite a few young children who frequent the park with their parents, and also the fact that many people use the park as an off-leash area for their dogs.

We’ve had 1 cat go missing and another with 2 large punctures that required surgery in the past 2 months, and I’m now thinking one of these guys could possibly be the culprit.

And this morning, we received this note from someone who didn’t want to be identified:

I just wanted to let you know where I saw a coyote yesterday (and it was my first sighting).

It was at the stop sign on 106th SW and Marine View Drive [map]. It was 1:30 PM on Sunday 10/10/10.

He was coming up out of a private drive just west of Marine View Drive.

(ADDED 11:59 PM) From Sean:

I was just driving north on California and was surprised to see a coyote crossing the street. I never seem to hear about them in this area, so I thought I would report in! This was near the view park where Cali starts to go downhill toward Alki. [Hamilton Viewpoint] He was actually leaving one yard and ran into another rather than going through the park.

By the way, there’s a coyote discussion under way right now in the WSB Forums, if you haven’t seen it already. We always include “coexisting with coyotes” information along with coyote reports, and while participating in the Forums discussion, we found a new one that packages important advice in a simpler point-by-point – you can see it here.

I’ve lived in Sunrise Heights for over 40 years and the Coyotes have been around for all those 40 years! What do people expect! We are taking all of their “housing” (wooded areas) away from them! Where do expect them to go?

Hmmmmmm better then removing the Coyotes ….maybe we should “trap and remove ” some of the human trouble makers living West Seattle!

Yup. They were here first. One of the reasons a lot of us live in West Seattle is because of all the open space, forests, ravines, creeks etc. But this is where they live too.

I actually like seeing signs that there is thriving wildlife over here even if it is a little scary to see them run in front of your car, or hear them howling at night.

I saw a coyote running down my street last week in Sunrise Heights. 7500 block of 34th Ave SW. First time in the 10 years I’ve lived there.

I saw a coyote in front of my house 2 weeks ago at about 4AM. I live on 36th between Brandon & Dawson.
My cats are extremely unhappy about being kept inside.

Sally, I can understand your cats being unhappy being kept inside! Fresh air feels so good on the fur!!! … and cats don’t like to be walked on a leash! Sure would be nice to have a well screened in outdoor room for the pets!! Florida has them and my son’s cats love it!!

I live near Scmitz Park and saw one jumping down the rockery of my neighbors who have chickens and lope down the street around 7Pm a few months ago. There are also fox in the forest preserve and with a lot of green belts in West Seattle not at all surprising to see coyote-it is their land too.I saw them a lot growing up in Lynnwood when we had chickens!

“My cats are extremely unhappy about being kept inside”.
    .
However, all of the birds and other native wildlife ARE happy that your cats are inside. Well, maybe the coyotes aren’t happy that your cats are in.

Sorry, comment time is over.
