Today’s West Seattle Crime Watch roundup starts with two cases from the inbox: Julia reported a car break-in at the Chelan Café‘s east lot Sunday morning around 11 – happened to folks in line at the restaurant next to them, she says: ” It was a newer silver SUV with very tinted windows and it sounded like the thieves got a purse and possibly some of the luggage in there. Wanted to alert people that this happened… That location is an easy spot to smash and grab and drive away on the bridge so please remind people not to leave anything valuable in their cars while parked!” Second, James just e-mailed from the 7700 block of 46th SW to say, “This morning, when showing a contractor where our cable TV runs into the house, I noticed that the screens on our basement windows were pulled off and a sloppy attempt was made to pry our windows open with what seems like a small screwdriver. This must have happened sometime in the last 2 weeks.” Meantime, we have info on 5 burglaries and 1 burglary attempt reported to West Seattle police last week, the newest cases available in the new online-access-to-some-police-reports system, now that it finally updated – read on for summaries (remember, this system has a few days’ lag – so if it happens to you, let us know, so the news will get out quicker):

When the narratives aren’t too long, we’ve included them, in the blue-box format; longer ones, we’ll summarize. Reminder, the police-report system “redacts” (blacks out) the exact address as well as most names, so if you see a gap (or something like C/V (“complainant/victim”), that’s what happened.

4600 BLOCK BEACH DRIVE, FRIDAY EVENING (JUNE 4):

The C/V was working from home in her office located on the E/side of the home. The C/V stated she thought she heard someone at the front door. At this time her dog (Black Lab) started to bark. The C/V went to the front door but no one was there. She then noticed her dog go to the back door of the house on the E/Side of the house and continue to bark. The C/V went to her bedroom which has a back door. She noticed the suspect at the back door looking inside her home. They made eye contact and the suspect seemed surprised to see the C/V.The C/V opened the door and said “what are you doing here?” The susp. ran E/bound through the backyard and up a short hill to a 6′ fence which he cleared easily. A search was done by two other ofc’s but the susp. was not located.

8100 BLOCK 27TH SW, WEDNESDAY MIDDAY (JUNE 2):

On 06-02-10 V/ had a medical issue and had to go to the hospital. While she was gone, unknown suspect(s) pried open the back door to her home at 81– 27 Av SW. The suspect(s) stole 2 large jars of loose change, several pieces of jewelry, and approximately 50 mint condition, uncirculated US quarters individually packaged in envelopes.

3700 BLOCK SW SULLIVAN, WEDNESDAY MORNING/AFTERNOON (JUNE 2): The victim of this burglary told police that his son and the son’s girlfriend “have been taking items from his residence over the past few years to support their habits.” Finally after a showdown, the report says, the son was told to leave, but apparently broke in to shower and eat on Tuesday 6/1, slept outside the house that night, then allegedly broke in through a window the next day and stole a $400 guitar amplifier.

7700 BLOCK 15TH SW, WEDNESDAY MORNING OR AFTERNOON (JUNE 2):

At approximately 1957 hrs I was dispatched to investigate a possible forced-entry burglary at 77– 15 Av SW. I arrived and contacted V/ who told me that while he was gone at work during the day somebody broke into his house and stole some items … The house was unoccupied from 1100-1830hrs. V/ told me that when he got home the back door was ajar but he left it closed and locked when he left for work. The victim showed me a side window where the screen had been cut out. V/ provided me a list of items that were stolen including; Panasonic 42″ Plasma TV, Sony Vaio Laptop, Toshiba Satellite Laptop, and 6 baseball caps that belonged to his daughter’s boyfriend.

7500 BLOCK CALIFORNIA SW, WEDNESDAY MORNING OR AFTERNOON (JUNE 2):

… I responded to 75– California AV SW to investigate a forced entry residential burglary. I arrived, contacting V/ who stated the he had already cleared the house. V/ explained when he got home he noticed drawers open in the kitchen and bedroom as well as alcohol bottles on the counter. V/ reported he discovered a broken window on the south side of the basement. The window had been slid open. V/ stated the following items were missing; a silver ring with a sea anemone shape on it, 30GB IPOD, ½ Gallon Crown Royal Whiskey, and approximately 12 DVD’s. V/ stated the neighbor on the side of their home heard someone knocking on their door at about 1200 hours, but did not observe anything else. It is believed the suspect knocked on the door and when he observed no one home, he went to the south side of the residence using a baseball to break the window. The suspect then reached through the broken window and slid it open. The suspect then climbed through the window onto the dryer. The suspect went upstairs and ransacked the bedroom drawers and alcohol cupboard. There was a baseball located outside the broken window which is believed to have been used to break the window. There were numerous pieces of broken glass on the exterior of the home.

The final case in the system from last week was an Alki-area burglary last Tuesday that had already been reported here, thanks to e-mail from a neighbor.

Reminder: The West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meets one week from tonight, 7 pm June 15th at the Southwest Precinct, with special guest City Attorney Pete Holmes; this meeting is always an excellent chance to bring concerns directly to local police leadership.
