West Seattle Weather Watch: Rain lessening, drain danger lingers

Couldn’t quite tell if there’s a blocked drain under that big gutter pond we found along 35th SW near Cloverdale (map) this morning, but that sort of “ponding” tends to hint at one, which is why – even as today’s morning downpour makes way for what’s supposed to be a less-soggy afternoon – the city is issuing reminders about citizens’ role in lessening drain-related danger. First, Seattle Public Utilities has issued another reminder about the Adopt-a-Drain program – and three more chances to get free cleanup supplies – details here. Second, property owners and construction crews are reminded to check out “drain socks” – those temporary inserts placed in drains to catch sediment – forgotten “socks” have caused big problems in the past. Here’s the full city alert on those. Lots more government info on winter weather is available at takewinterbystorm.org.

I have noticed people did use blower to get leaves off their yards to the curbs. why would they do that? They could have gotten flood on their yards if they dont clean up and keep sewers open for drivers’ safety.

Gee, if Seattle Public Utilities are so concerned about citizens helping keep the drains clear, maybe they shouldn’t have eliminated the autumn “extra container” yard waste allowance that we used to get in October and November before they jacked up the collection rates.

I noticed an older gentleman raking leaves out of a drain on 8th Ave SW just north of Roxbury late this morning. Quite a bit of water was there from the heavy rain last night/this morning – the entire northbound lane of the street was flooded! By the time I passed by later in the day it looked like he had finished and the street was drained.

Yes, I saw him too, but it was last week when it was raining really hard! He is the only person I have seen cleaning out a clogged drain anywhere is West Seattle/ White Center/ SODO/ Lake Union in the past week.

Sorry, comment time is over.
