Looking at this, I sort of miss the all way stops of my hometown

Is this just more vehicle accident reporting or are some people driving like idiots the past couple of days?

    What’s the hurry?

What is up with the abundant amount of car accidents in West Seattle lately? How fast was this car traveling that it made the SUV flip onto it’s top?

There’s an a-hole who lives near Othello SW and 35th SW with a red compact car with a white spoiler that likes to back up towards oncoming Metro buses and other traffic. Beware!

It’s because no one pays attention at the unmarked intersections…people think it’s safe to just keep on driving without looking at the cross street traffic….bad idea.

Two very pleasant women who live just a block away were at the last Delridge District Council meeting with a well done proposal in hand requesting funding via the Neighborhood Street Fund for a traffic circle at 31st and Henderson. They stated that Henderson between 30th and 34th is a race track with drivers flying through and plenty of them not bothering to slow or look both ways as they proceed through intersections.

Seems likely that this accident is possibly a result of one or both drives not obeying the rules of the road which states:

At an intersection where there is no stop sign, yield sign, or traffic signal, drivers must yield to vehicles in the intersection and to those coming from the right.

“people think it’s safe to just keep on driving without looking at the cross street traffic….bad idea.”

Yes, like the SPD patrol car that blew right by me and HE had the yield sign. Luckily I stopped because I saw headlights (no siren, no flashing lights, just normal headlights). If I had not stopped he would have had my bumper in his face.

Time for everyone to realize no matter what, you need to slow down and check to see if anyone is coming.

This is my ‘hood. These two streets aren’t even arterials. I haven’t seen that kind of speed on Henderson but someone was going too fast. I hope all are well.

Unmarked Intersections. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection without any traffic-control device to regulate the flow of traffic entering the intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles already in the intersection or to any vehicle approaching from his right whenever that vehicle is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.

the law as it’s written above…

To the comment from Sasquatch, that idiot thinks he or she can do what ever they want, I have almost run into them a few times. And the car is for sale too….

These uncontrolled intersections were great back in the “day” when people were actually safe drivers. I see near misses all the time in my neighborhood because both drivers think they have the right-of-way.

People need to SLOW DOWN at uncontrolled intersections.

I have noticed over the past few years that more and more traffic travels down the streets parallel to 35th. I believe cars are trying to avoid the lights, and now, the red light camera. I have watched many a car come from as early as north as Thislte and drive all the way to Roxbury. This terrible driving behavior wants me to have speed bumps and driving circles on every side street!

  • westwoodmom March 26, 2009 (6:56 pm)

We are a block up from there and part of the group hoping to get that traffic circle at 31st. People use our streets to avoid the lights/construction, etc on 35th and zip down at amazing speeds quite regularly. It is such a habit that at least 2 people drove AROUND the sawhorses the city put up with our last August Night Out-WITH a dozen adults and children in the street-just to drive on through. This is the second rollover in a few months, the last would have clipped anyone standing near the sidewalk.

I wonder what the increased population these past few years has to do with the number of accidents and crime? hmmmmmm

  • AD March 26, 2009 (11:55 pm)

Why are people avoiding the red light cameras? Do people intentionally run red lights frequently? I don’t have a problem with them because I don’t run reds. They do make me think twice about speeding up when there’s a stale green or yellow…

People have no idea how to drive through uncontrolled intersections. I basically stop at these because I have almost been hit numerous times. What ever direction they are driving is the right of way apparently. Instead of putting in those useless cameras at intersections they should be putting stop signs in these back street neighborhoods. I have no idea how much those ridiculous camera systems cost, but I bet you could put stop signs at 50 uncontrolled intersections.

  • KM March 27, 2009 (10:03 am)

I used to live down the street from this intersection and I am NOT surprised that a car was going fast enough to flip. I take the same approach as CLT and stop at every corner so I am completely in favor of traffic circles on every intersection.

  • furor scribendi March 27, 2009 (1:58 pm)

I live on the street where the flip occured. People drive east from 35th to get some ‘air’ on this hill, while others drive fast up and down 32nd sometimes ignoring stop signs on Barton and Trenton – – and bad accidents have happened before. The perps are usually young and going too fast. I’d like a traffic circle where this accident happened, at 32nd and Henderson, not at 31st, because its at the top of a hill and thus worse visability, which would stop this nonsense.

  • me March 27, 2009 (5:59 pm)

they put a circle at 34th/henderson for the same reason..
with the library and such right there, everyone was always blowing thru. there was two flipped trucks and at least two “regular” accidents in the 3yrs i was here before they put in the circle. there have been zero since.

In the Portland neighborhood where my daughter lives, they have put stop signs every other block all directions. It seems to be set up like a gingham check pattern, with north south streets getting their two blocks when east west get stopped, and vice versa, so that no one direction gets a long run without stop signs. Only arterials have long runs without stop signs. You quickly learn to not go too fast if you are not on an arterial, you’ll wear out your brakes! Traffic circles are more certain, I suppose. You are not likely to ignore them like you can signs. I feel like my granddaughter is pretty safe there. Cars don’t go fast around her home, they are coming up to a stop sign, again.

Sorry, comment time is over.
