Early morning weather check

Major ice on the car, so if you don’t have a garage to park in, you’re likely to need some scraping time. Looks like all the school delays are to the east and north. Same with the Metro changes. Forecast: Clear, cold day. Check traffic cams here.

No ice on the roads here in WS to speak of- but definitely on the cars. Brrr!

Isn’t it interesting how cars can get so much colder than the surrounding air such that ice can freeze on them and nothing else? Reminds me of a story I read a few years back about a researcher at Dartmouth College who discovered the exact nature of the electro-chemical bond that makes ice stick so strongly to things. At the time they were saying that his discovery would potentially lead to methods for applying minute amounts of electric current that at the flip of a switch could repel ice off any surface (cars, airplane wings, etc.). By the same token, they figured out the exact form of current to make the ice re-stick to things so that potentially you could even, at the push of a button, make your car tires sticky on the ice as well. I’m not sure whatever happened to that research but it was interesting.

Strange—nothing on the roads in WSEA, and up here on Capitol Hill, it’s an ice rink, even on the sidewalks.

The WS bridge was ice-free at 5:45 and SODO is clear as well.

99 North was a mess this morning after exiting the Battery Street tunnel. I crawled along in first gear. Fremont is an ice rink too- lots of people were driving cars that should not be driven in these conditions. I just don’t understand why people without all wheel drive or snow tires try to drive in these conditions- I’d be taking the bus!

I like to be up by 5am every morning. I hate people who don’t get to bed by 9pm.

m: All-wheel drive and snow tires don’t really help very much on ice. You can still spin out pretty easily. I’ve seen it happen.

I’m just trying to say that people need more common sense; if you dont’ have experience driving in poor conditions or your car is not well equipped for bad weather (or the roads are REALLY bad), don’t try to drive. Walk yourself to a bus stop and let Metro do the work. I’ve been in accidents before and it sucks- I don’t hesitate to take the bus if I wouldn’t be comfortable driving. It would be nice if others would exercise similar judgment so other people’s lives and/or property would not be jeopardized.

Ha ha ha. Snow tires. In Seattle. For all that snow that we get. We probably need chains too. So that we can tear up our roads even more!

Sorry, comment time is over.
