West Seattle Crime Watch: Burglary-attempt alert

This happened within the past hour in Highland Park, according to BigRed:

I just wanted to put the word out on an attempted break-in on our house around 12pm today; we live on 17th and Trenton [map]. I was home sick and my husband works from home and we have a rather large dog, so I am not quite sure why they picked our house but it worked out well! My husband was working in his office with his curtains closed and heard something on his window. He opened his curtain and found a younger African-American male, age 15-16 trying to pry our window open. This scared the robber off and he escaped down our alley. My husband also saw a younger female with the suspect, he didn’t get a good look at her but she seemed around the same age, possibly Hispanic. A section of our fence along the side was removed so they could get into our yard. Cops responded quickly and are canvassing the neighborhood for suspects. Our 95lb “guard dog” slept peacefully through it all.

Good for you! Hope they catch ’em. I do have to laugh, having a huge guard dog, too, that although your guy slept through “the attempt”, I’d love to see what he would have done if the criminal actually got in. Go dogs, go!! Burglars beware, we WILL let our dogs bite you! Let us know if the cops catch the idiot.

I will never understand what thought process is used to make people think it’s ok to take or even touch something that doesn’t belong to them. I just love that I can’t leave my windows open in the summer or go out at night without thinking about someone trying to break into my house.

Redblack. I am 2 blocks from you. We were robbed last year about this time. Unfortunately our dog was not home at the time. This is a good reminder to stay vigilant. Our area was hit pretty hard during the holidays last year.

Is not a bad idea to be on alert.
And look for suspicious activity and strangers in your neighborhood especially if they’re wondering around with no apparent reason. Or people fixing a car.
Report vehicles that look abandoned etc.

17th and Trenton is West Seattle, not White Center, which officially begins at Roxbury, half a mile away.

Kim Highlanrd Park *IS* part of “our city” — it is legally, practically and otherwise West Seattle, and is home to some EXTREMELY community-active families who contribute enormous time and money to West Seattle’s interests.

And be careful about pointing the finger. Other areas in the north of Holden/west of 35th area have higher crime rates than Highland Park. Your perception is simply wrong. We’re a great neighborhood full of young families as well as folks who’ve lived here 30+ years, and quite honestly, from what I’ve seen, we’re more “neighborly” than many other areas.

Don’t kid yourself, Kim. Crime is rampant in other parts of the city, including the areas north and west of White Center. Seriously, how can you not know that?

I love White Center. I love that you can get tropical fish and personal lubricant at the same store. And the Asian food/groceries are unbeatable! Prices, too. Love it!

Burglary at West Seattle Medi-Spa 12/07/10… Recognize this guy? Sorry to any of you that have been victims of the same. Such a nice community and just in time for the holidays. Take care and be safe.
